Sprawling Folk from Grand Lake Islands

gliI’ve really really been enjoying listening to Song From Far, the new album from Grand Lake Islands.  There’s some long songs on there, but they sprawl and change, opening up new doors to your musical ears.  They’ve just offered up a new single, “Monterey,” in reference to California, not Mexico, and it’s another one of those tunes that rolls like the tumbleweed, kicked on by a solid drum background.  There’s a slight twang to the guitar work and the vocal has this natural warmth I’ve taken a liking to lately.  The new LP comes out next week via Good Mountain Records.

Powerful Track From Waxahatchee

10_700_700_549_waxahatchee_ivytrip_900pxBeen perusing the internet a little bit today and found this great new track from indie rocker Katie Crutchfield and her project known as Waxahatchee.  The track is called “Air” and is a simple, yet powerful tune, with its banging drums and washed out guitar driving us throughout.  Press play and enjoy the same thing I’ve been jamming all morning.

Pick up new album, Ivy Tripp, on April 7th via Merge.

The Softer Side of Young Guv

younggzaWhen you’re working with a band like Fucked Up, people are bound to make assumptions about what your solo work will sound like, right? You’d think Young Guv, the band’s guitarist would bring us some sort of heavy-edged punk, or maybe the power-pop influenced touches he brought on his recent EP with the Scuzz.  But, it seems like Ben Cook has some doses of R&B smoothness built into his work; it’s evidenced in this groovy hit he’s just put out in anticipation of his new LP.  The title of the record is Ripe 4 Luv, perhaps giving us a hint that we should expect more songs like this; it’ll be released by Slumberland on March 10th.

Introducing Telephantom

10349194_813275075400291_8705944154510680169_nOne of the great things about running your own site is you get to write about whatever the fuck you want, especially your friends bands.  Here I am today introducing you to my friend Nick’s band, Telephantom.  Nick plays drums in Young Girls, but this new act he’s working with is pure synth pop.  There’s obviously an energetic push in the front with that hooky synth line.  The more I listen, the more it reminds me of this band Soviet who I used to dance to all day long in my room.  Not sure what the future recording plans are for these guys, but they’ll have a show in Houston this Saturday at Fitzgerald’s…you know, if you’re out that way.

Jangle Along With The Dirty Heat

10841873_377797762381344_390968638546037313_oWhen it comes to indie rock that’s on the folksier side, I’m pretty much a sucker for two things: harmonies and effortless guitar riffs. So when I heard this new single from locals, The Dirty Heat, I was almost instantly on board and ready to share this track. “Too Small,” the song below, is a new single from these up-and-coming gents that has just enough campy jangle to make sure your toes never stop tapping. While it begins pretty starkly with just some drastic vocals, quickly the simmering drums are introduced as well as that groovy guitar riff that never ceases to ground those soaring vocals. Take a listen below and check out their debut album.

Dance Along with Django Django

DjangoDjango_byMikaelGregorsky

Scottish four piece Django Django put out their first album of psychedelic pop a few years back and since then they’ve been picking up steam and lauded for their quirky take on pop music. Today, I’ve got a new song for you from these gents that’s fittingly called “First Light,” as looks to be the first single off an upcoming album. While details are still to come on that sophomore release, the details of the song below are quite readily available for you to enjoy. When you first press play, you’ll notice that this doesn’t really sound like psychedelic, but rather heavy synth electro pop, but this change has you grooving with the band from the very start. As the track progresses, the band layers in harmonies that creates a buzzing soundscape. Enjoy.

Light Hearted Electro Pop from Laura Groves

tinydancerI like to kick off my Tuesday’s with a relaxed bit of electro.  Sometimes I go for the harder hitting jams, but I’m feeling this new tune from Laura Groves today. The beat’s not too out there; it’s pretty straight-forward in fact, but it allows for a great bit of vocal playfulness…that’s why I’m digging it. She’ll be releasing her new EP titled Committed Language on February 17th via DEEK Recordings.

Love This New Twerps Single

twerpsIt’s amazing what a little push from the big guys like P4K can do for a band; this new single from Twerps has blown up in the last four days with the “Best New Music” tag, and I couldn’t be happier for the band.  Ever since we first covered the act way back in 2011, they’ve brought this great calm to low-tempo pop music.  I love the littlest touches the band puts to finishing up each track, like adding a slight backing female vocal in spots…especially when the guitars ring a hint louder than normal.  All this points towards a sneaking suspicion that Range Anxiety is going to be a sure-hit for Chapter Music/Merge Records when the LP is released at the end of January.
