Spot On Pop Tune from Animal Daydream

easyThere are occasions when you get a tune that you can stop playing; it seeps into your soul, delighting your senses every step of the say. That’s precisely the sentiment I got when I first put on this new single from Sweden’s Animal Daydream.  The guitar work could possibly take a nod to some of the modern indie acts like Real Estate, but it also looks back even further to the heyday of 70s soft rock. Sure, that era might be gone, but when band’s can execute songs like this, it’s hard to turn away.  The Easy Pleasures EP will be released next week via Jigsaw Records.

Blast This New Viet Cong Track

unnamed (2)After Viet Cong, made up of past members of Women, shared their lovely debut single, “Continental Shelf” from their upcoming record last year, the internet has been abuzz with praise and hype for what this band’s first album has in store. Following the enticing psychedelic power pop of that track, the band’s got another track from their forthcoming record to share with you and get you even more ready for the full record. This track has a little less of a Wolf Parade vibe and more of a straightforward rock and roll feel to it– the multilayered vocals dominate “Silhouettes” alongside the shredding psych’ed out guitar lines. Their debut self titled album is slated to come out in a few short weeks on January 20th via Jagjaguwar Records and you can pre-order it right here. You really don’t want to miss this track/band/album.

Chastity Belt Signs with Hardly Art

chastityI’m always happy to throw a shout out to our longtime friends over at Hardly Art, especially when I get excited about one of their new signings.  In this case, the label has signed up with Seattle’s Chastity Belt, who are bringing a nice dose of indie rock to the proverbial table.  There’s a jagged edge to the guitar riffs, though that’s often touched upon by some distortion; it’s backed by a strong vocal performance that comes across as a relaxed nod to 90s girl groups.  I also love the switch of pace that occurs here and there, throughout. Look for the group’s new album Time to Go Home on March 24th.

Introducing The Fireworks

unnamed (3)The Fireworks are an electrifying power dream pop outfit based in London who have celebrated quite a bit of growing success already from their initial releases. They’ve put out a few singles as well as EP’s which should have already gotten your attention, but if you haven’t been formally acquainted with this group, have a listen to the track below. “On and On,” while brief, gives you a perfect slice of electric guitar heavy rock that still appeals to your dream pop sensibilities with the reverb laden vocals of Emma Hall. This group has their debut album, Switch Me On, set to be released February 10th of this year on Shelflife Records, so get excited and pre-order.

The King Khan & BBQ Show Return

UntitledKing Khan and his many projects have long been talked about on this website since our inception.  Today I’m pleased to be sharing with you this awesome new track from his work with the BBQ Show called “Alone Again”.  It’s a pretty typical KK&TBS tune with its garage like feel and upbeat tone throughout.  Can the man ever do wrong?

Pick up new album, Bad News Boys, on February 24th via In the Red Records.

New Music from Ryley Walker

ryleyFeel sort of off my rocker today; I’m all over the map.  Brought a sweet rock tune, a nice pop tune, but now onto something a bit more expansive with Ryley Walker. Today we have our first listen to his new single, which has this piano backbone that’s carried forward by some delicate acoustic guitar work. It’s definitely the sort of song that allows you to sink into your couch while the fire’s burning in Winter, immersing yourself in some quiet solitude.  Look out for his new album, Primrose Green, via Dead Oceans on March 31st.

Pure Pop from Diet Cig

overeasyWe started out the morning with some heavier sounds, so let’s flip that over and visit the pop spectrum, albeit for a moment.  This track from Diet Cig made it’s way to the world yesterday, and I’m jumping on board with the band’s catchy new song “Scene Sick.”  The tune starts off well-enough, with a light ditty making its way to your eardrums, but the finest moments, in my eyes, are in the latter part of the song when guitars are turned up and the hooks sink their teeth into you.  The group’s Over Easy EP will be available at the end of February courtesy of Father Daughter Records.

New Tune from Obnox

Obnox_BoogalouReedI’ll admit, I was a little late to the Obnox discovery; I got turned on via the band’s Louder Space LP (12XU).  But, that being said, and accepting my faults, I’ve come to appreciate the work of Lamont Thomas as one of the more gratifying discoveries, for me, in the last few years.  He creates this wall of noise that probably gets dumped in the trash pile of garage rock, but there’s a much more classic sound of straight ahead rock music here, with vocal touches that grab listeners, pulling them into a world of noisy enjoyment. Look for the new album, Boogalou Reed, on January 27th via 12XU.

Turn Up American Culture

acNo, this is not some rhetoric on the culture of America, but rather a post about a band I just recently discovered, American Culture. The group is set to release their debut LP, Pure American Gum, via the label on January 11th, and the sound I’m hearing from the group has me more than amped. You’ll hear a certain pop sensibility lurking beneath distorted guitars and vocals, creating a nostalgic feeling that’s just left of the dial.  You may not have heard of the group as of yet, but thanks to Jigsaw Records, it’ll be one of your favorites this January.

Catch Up on Sugar Candy Mountain

shuggaOne of the end of year LPs that really caught me was Sugar Candy Mountain; it hit just as went on our little holiday break, and I’ve been steadily to Mystic Hits every since.  It takes the standard sound of modern psychedelic music, then adds touches of pop structures to make every track on the LP successful.  The listen sort of makes me wish we were enjoying some warm weather, but at least we have these tunes to help do the trick.  You can grab the LP from Royal Oakie as we speak.
