Honduras, It’s Been Awhile

hondoA year or so ago, I was really into jamming Honduras, but they seem to have been relatively through that time…until this brand new single caught my ear.  It fulfills on early promise of blending melodies with this post-rock sensations…the spoken word vocal delivery is a nice twist on the style. Still, the band have a great tendency to get noisy in all the right places, which ends up always keeping their tracks memorable.  Look for their debut, Rituals, this June via Black Bell Records.

Interested to Hear this Y33BA

y3Your 33 Black Angels is a collective group of musicians rocking it in Brooklyn.  But, while a lot of the collectives generally have a post-rock feel, there seems to be a more pop-centric focus of this outfit, akin to Violens.  I wouldn’t be surprised if they totally flipped it on me though, and brought out something incredibly rad and different; I mean, isn’t that what collectives are for…to push the envelope? We’ll all get to hear exactly what the work of mixed minds have concocted when they release GLAMOUR on May 12th…for now we have this little taste.

SXSW Interview: Summer Cannibals

Spend Friday with Creepoid (SXSW Artist)

creepzThere are some tunes that you click on and immediately you’re hooked. For me, this new Creepoid had it with that guitar sound; it opens carefully, swirling around your earbuds before bursting forth with a bit more distortion and volume.  Here you’ll find that the vocals fit perfectly into the track, never overstepping the rest of the band, riding out the huge wave of post-rock that the band has set up.  They’ve just signed to Collect Records to release their album Cemetery Highrise Slum; it’ll be  out via the label on June 23rd.

Have You Heard John Galm?

jgWell, just in case you didn’t know, John Galm is the man behind countless bands like Snowing or Slow Warm Death, you should take a listen to his work now.  While those acts have their own distinct style, he’s taken a much more stripped down approach with his solo work.  Late last year he released Sky of No Stars, which I passed on for some reason or another…but I won’t be passing now that the LP is getting an album release via Square of Opposition Records. Marie Davidson Crafts Herself Some IDM

marieEDM gets all the hype nowadays, but there are small circles that appreciate the original days where the I replaced the E, making ambient/techno in a smarter, possibly less consumable, manner. On Marie Davidson‘s latest single, it’s clear to me that she’s stepping forward to grab the reins.  There’s an immediate propulsion to the tune, though it’s not an out-and-out beat to make the kids pump their fists.  Little electronic bleeps burst through while Davidson speaks in French atop her constructed piece.  This is the sort of electronic music I can get behind; look out for Un Autre Voyage via Holodeck Records on April 14th.

SXSW 2015 Hip-Hop: Freddie Gibbs

freddie-gibbs-usa-flag-grungecake-thumbnailWhen Freddie Gibbs first gained attention outside of his native Gary, Indiana with his mixtape The Miseducation of Freddie Gibbs, he seemed destined for stardom. Five years, a couple EPs, and an independent album later Gibbs seems to be nowhere near the stardom some expected from him. There’s no doubt that the mainstream music audience noticed him; a member of the 2010 XXL Freshman class, a highly publicized friendship and then falling out with rapper Jeezy. So, why is Gibbs making EPs with lesser known artists like Statik Selektah and Madlib? Why did he only have mostly little known guest rappers on his album? Because he likes his specific brand of music and is clearly only interested in mainstream success if it means not compromising his artistry. Expect an authentic show to compliment his incredible delivery at his SXSW 2015 performance.  Follow the jump for video.

Finnmark! Return With Classic Pop

finnMan, how I missed Finnmark!. I guess the troubles of being in a band are recording, touring and funding, so perhaps the band have hit some snags in getting new material my way (I hope not). But, they passed me this great new jam, which is part of the excellent February Records 5th Anniversary Compilation.  You want an indiepop gem? You don’t have to go far, this time with the band slowing things down with chugging guitar chords and a deeper tonal quality; it’s the sort of track that makes all your friends swoon when you put it on their latest mixtape.  Hope so hard these guys keep it going and bring us more new tunes.

Just Checking In On Grandparents

grandyIt’s been almost three years since I last wrote a word or two about Portland’s Grandparents, but now that they’r prepping new tunes, seems like the right time to give the band a shout-out.  In writing about this tune, part of it’s because of my love of the band’s early work, and the other part is that it seems like the band spent a lot of time listening to Your Majesty by the Anniversary…an album I still think people overlooked. It’s got some space-age keyboards, but a sound rooted in folk/soul, wrapped inside a nice little indie box. Hopefully we hear more soon as the band prep their forthcoming LP.
