Of Montreal – Aureate Gloom

ofmontrealRating: ★★★½☆

If you still somehow don’t know who Kevin Barnes and Of Montreal are, after the ever-impressive and prolific thirteen studio albums that he’s put out, I’m at a loss as to what to really say to you. Of Montreal is a household name at this point, and rightly so; this project has been around for almost twenty years now making slightly off kilter psychedelic indie rock for the ages. Aureate Gloom, the thirteenth in the vast collection from this group, finds the band striking a resonant chord once again, bringing together glam/trippy rock and funky lyrics to make for an odd yet enjoyable trip into whatever world Of Montreal are living in.

It’s remarkable after all these albums that this band is still able to put out the hits; Aureate Gloom has a fair number of tracks that feel simultaneously familiar and novel. Opening up the album is “Bassem Sabry,” which launches you right into the groovy realm of the band, as springy disco guitar puts the spunk in this song, and then Barnes’ voice steps in to spiral around with immaculate diction, all of which inspire the same twisted distortion of our own perception of the music. This opening number is a great start, and when Barnes says “I believe in witches/I believe in you,” he brings in yet another element of fantasy to the mix, but often the fantasy isn’t whimsical, but grounded in scathing words sometimes chastising a group or part of life. Later, on “Virgilian Lots,” the music mirrors this grounding with the eerie synths and the gritty guitars.

There’s also the ever-so-obvious Bowie influence, as well as Barnes’ play within this trope of alien spaceman rocker, which comes into play on tracks like “Aluminum Crowd,” where Barnes’ vocals ooze Bowie. But instead of this becoming just mere imitation, Barnes’ lyrics, as well as the structure of this song, give it enough of the band’s own signature to set it apart. It sort of feels like a futuristic imagining of the past, tying together the aspects of glam rock with modern sensibilities and elements that keep it fresh.

Aureate Gloom is a fun record simply in that it has enough funkyness to make you shimmy along with Barnes and company as well as some twisted and alternate reality-esque lyrics to escape into. Of Montreal have still got it, and they want to share with you so we can all trip down this psychedelic distorted, yet comforting road.

Yep, This Chastity Belt Tune is a Winner (SXSW Artist)

chasteSome tracks, you press play, and you go back over and over again. No matter what, the song supersedes anything else in your listening rotation, which is precisely the case with this new track from Chastity Belt. It’s got just the right amount of bounce to it, combined with the dreamy quality of the vocals.  There’s a distance to the vocals, though that doesn’t prevent you from attaching yourself to the lyrics…and ultimately the tune.  Look for this hit and more on the band’s new album, Time to Go Home, being released by Hardly Art on March 24th.

Show Pics: Craft Spells @ Red7 (3/3)

Craft SpellsTuesday night had a couple of shows and this time around, we made the tough choice to go with the touring acts hitting Red7 over a sweet local show at Cheer Up. We know it is overwhelming right now, trying to think about waht bands to see with SxSW just around the corner.

Craft Spells brought along an ATH favorite The Bilinda Butchers; call it a Captured Tracks mini-showcase. Locals Whiite Walls opened the night. I ended up shooting in black and white just for fun.

Hope you enjoy. Click through for more thoughts and plenty of pics…

ATX Spotlight: Town Hall Devils to Release EP (+ SHOW)

townhalldevils-EPreleaseshowOne thing that’s great to see is that a majority of the people working behind the scenes in venues here in Austin are also a big part of that scene, all rocking out in their own bands.  This is the case with Tyson Swindell, who helps run the always kind Red 7, but let’s turn our focus to his band Town Hall Devils. The band have just readied their new Ouroboros Blues EP, and it’s definitely something to sink your teeth into.  It reminds me at times of a heavier-handed Lucero, but sounds similar to our other local favorites like A. Sinclair, just playing good old fashioned rock n’ roll.  You’ll be able to catch them live for their album release over at The Blackheart tomorrow night; the whiskey and the tunes will keep you warm, I promise. Stream the EP below.

Hear Another American Wrestlers Tune

awFeels like the new American Wrestlers album should be out already, right?  They had a bunch of great buzz built at the end of last year/beginning of 2015…then things went silent for a wee bit, until you hear this new single. It’s a tune build upon the backbone of a solid piano, holding space for the coated vocals to dance across the top whilst an electronic beat holds things in place.  There’s fine touches like a soloing guitar that add some differentiation in the middle of the tune, just so you don’t get weary and ensuring the track is a success. The band’s self-titled album will be out on April 7th via Fat Possum Records.

SXSW 2015 Hip-Hop: IAMSU!

IAMSU! is one of the more talented acts to come out of the California Bay Area, post-Hyphy movement. IAMSU! has been making a name for himself on the west coast for a number of years and is also one of the founding members of the Heartbreak Gang (aka HBK Gang) rap group, which also includes Sage the Gemini, famous for the 2013 hit “Gas Pedal”. IAMSU! performed along with HBK Gang at Fader Fort last year and is returning for several shows this year. Confirmed performances include Bar 96 on 3/19 and Clive Bar on 3/20, along with another unspecified confirmation.

Cillie Barnes is Enchanting

J142531898635_PMust heard this new song “Facework” from songstress Cillie Barnes and am finding myself a little bit entranced with her work.  Many may immediately label her as the next St. Vincent, but I think that would be somewhat unfair since not every chick with a guitar who can sing should immediately fall into that category.  I like that the track has an almost hip hop sounding beat behind it combined with an oh so beautiful voice.  Lovely.

This song is part of singles collection entitled Friendly Witch due out April 29th (pre-order here).

Say Hello to Petite League

10488368_817656524970061_2505200827898406327_nYou may or may not remember a post I made about a year ago featuring up and coming indie band Spark Alaska.  Since that time, founding member Lorenzo Cook has parted ways with his old project and created a new entity known as Petite League.  In comparison to the old work, the new project is less in the singer/songwriter vein and is a more focused, pop themed style.  While it is fairly simple and low on production quality, the driving chorus and slick little guitar licks throughout create a memorable basement pop experience.  Stay tuned as we get more information about a possible new EP in the works.

Rock This Upbeat Lazeyes Tune (SXSW Artist)

blazyeyesYou needed something in the middle of the week to pick you up, right? Why not try on this angular new post-rock from Lazyeyes! It’s got these knifing guitar parts that cut back and forth through the song, almost creating a dancing euphoria, though the track’s pacing and vocals throw that a bit off-kilter. It’s filled with a hook, but it’s brevity makes it perfect in that you never grow bored, pressing play over and over again…just like this asshole. This is a brand new track, but if you like what you hear, then grab the band’s New Year EP…and see them at SXSW if you’re here with us.

Holly Miranda Has It All

hollyInstead of going on about how Holly Miranda is a female songwriter with looks and songs, let’s just enjoy listening to this great new single of hers.  I love the nonchalance in her lyrical display here, not to mention the coated fragility that seems to seep through.  And, instead of just giving us a singer-songwriter touch, she adds some atmospheric flourishes behind it all, strengthening the heart of the track; it puts her in a league where few other live…female or not.  Look for her self-titled LP to hit on May 19th via Dangerbird Records.
