ATX Spotlight: Institute Full Length On Its Way

instLast year’s Salt EP really solidified Institute as a group to be aware of in the broad spectrum of the Internet rock n’ roll buzz-bands, but those in Austin likely had already been paying attention to the group (if not their other projects like Glue or Wiccans, etc). Now, they’ve got the release of their new full-length lined-up, and this first single really has me amped for its release.  You’ll hear a certain nonchalance in the delivery of the vocals, while there’s a sharpness in the gritty recording of the rest of the act. Sounds like the band’s going all over the place on Catharsis, and I hope you all have fun on the ride…going to be a good one. (Sacred Bones 6/9)

Rocker From Shark?

10945857_10152496773606841_1340772088358167219_o (1)It’s been awhile since I last shared with you some new music from Brooklyn based outfit Shark?, so I’m excited to be giving you this new joint today.  This one is called “Hangnail” and is a true rock and roll number displaying some of the finest traits of the genre in one song.  You can almost feel the badass tendencies coming through the vocals and sludgy sounds on the track.

Shark? have a new EP entitled Becky and Debbie due out next week on Old Flame Records.

Jam the New Michael Rault Tune

mrThis new track from Michael Rault‘s pretty stellar, continuing the differentiation that Burger Records has been going through in the last year or so.  I guess you could call it lo-fi, but it’s more in the vein of Coma Cinema or Alex G, though there’s a sunnier side to his tunes.  It’s like taking the songwriting chops of the other two, tossing it in with a little California cologne, then spitting it out…it’s fucking dreamy. Living Daylight, his new album, will be out on May 5th via Burger, so if it’s your style, get your cash ready.

Another Solid Ancient River Track

ancientIf you’re going to make psychedelic rock, I feel like you should do it like Ancient River do.  They always sound like they’re playing in a smoke-filled room, barely audible among a hushed bunch of cult followers.  There’s no bombast or stomp to the sound; it’s just delivered in a steady manner that really allows for the listener to get lost in the emotional appeal of their music.  I’m expecting big things based on this new single, so we’ll see how it all unfolds when Keeper of the Dawn is unleashed on April 14th.

Minimalist Electro Pop From Night Beds

night beds

Nashville’s Winston Yellin has made the drastic switch from indie rock to electronically driven music under his project Night Beds, as the last single I shared with you a while ago showed us. “Tide Teeth,” takes us down this electro-pop road even further, and Yellin lets his vocals be the center stage of this song and the synth sounds waft in and out. While the track starts slow, it definitely builds to a more exciting finish.

Hear Another Track from Y33BA

glamAbout a month ago I brought you a new track from Y33BA, the secretive New York outfit also known as Your 33 Black Angels.  Today, I’ve got a new song from the group, and this one seems a lot more straightforward in its presentation. The song is just as propulsive as the early single, though there definitely sounds like there’s a Nada Surf presence on this tune, which would make sense seeing as both bands call NYC home.  On May 12th, you’ll finally get a chance to hear the band’s newest record, Glamour, which will probably sneak into a lot of your friend’s record collections. Hear why below!

New Kid Cudi music

Kid Cudi’s first official release since 2014’s Satellite Flight: The Journey to the Mother Moon is a song called “Love” from his forthcoming album, which he recently announced will be called Speedin’ Bullet to Heaven. Whether this will be a continuation of his Man on the Moon series has not yet been made clear. In the mean time, enjoy “Love”.

ATX Spotlight: Secret Daughter Release New Album

secretTrying to cover all the great music in Austin is pretty near impossible, so I was completely caught off-guard when I came across Secret Daughter.  They just released this incredible new record, 2, and I can’t do anything but beg you to go and listen to it right away.  There’s some elements of the dreamier side of indie rock here, though there’s other construction pieces…some more experimental, some gaze-y that fill out the band’s sound.  I’ll admit that I’ve done nothing but consume the music that’s below here since I found it…so don’t be an idiot like me and miss out on this band.

Wonderful New Tune from The Cave Children

cavechildrenThis tune from Greek outfit The Cave Children drifted across the ocean and into my consciousness, sticking there most of the last few days.  It’s a casual bit of pop music, relaxed in its approach, softly bouncing through your speakers.  I appreciate how they’re really able to hold steady throughout the song, not rushing but not going slowly, just wrapping their arms around pop sensibility and really going for it.  They’re releasing their debut album, Quasiland, this week via Inner Ear Records, and I have a feeling you’re going to love it.

Avid Dancer – 1st Bath

unnamed (1)Rating: ★★★☆☆

Jacob Dillion Summers, or the man behind the moniker of Avid Dancer, has lived quite a variety of lives. From a strict childhood home in which he only listened to Christian music, to joining the Marines as a drummer, to currently living in Venice Beach—Summers’ life has been anything but linear or straightforward. Naturally, this is mirrored in his music: while sometimes he gives you dance tracks of sultry indie pop, at other times he is reserved, spinning tunes of delicate acoustic music. 1st Bath is Summers’ debut full-length release, and he’ll have you dancing for sure.

Opening track “All The Other Girls” is a mild beginning, but it gives you a solid foundation for the rest of the album. This song grooves along from its initial moments, a combination of crisp percussion, soft synth sound, clean electric guitar licks and Summers’ even toned distant vocals. You think that you’ve discovered all there is to hear from this number, but then at the end you get a surprising entrance of saxophone that adds a surprising yet enjoyable outro. Then, a few tracks later you get the soft side of Avid Dancer in the form of radio ready gentle pop song, “All Your Words Are Gone.” This is quite a departure from the two songs that came before it, evoking a wistful and fairly whimsical quality. Summers sings carefree lyrics like “Throw away all things not worth needing/ Open your eyes and start believing,” and there’s even a “da-da-da” break within the track.

By the time you get to “I Want To See You Dance,” you’re itching for another danceable tune from Avid Dancer, and this track does not fail to deliver just that. Here, we’re back to the sultry dance-able indie pop, which shows Summers at his best. This song evokes the feeling of standing on the edge of the party only to be pulled onto the dance floor by your friends or perhaps an alluring stranger and then having the time of your life in a sweaty blur of motion. The drums are hi-hat heavy, there’s a gritty guitar riff in there, some synth meanders in and out and the lyrics provide the role of that ensnarer; roping you in with his words.

For a debut record, 1st Bath shows great promise from Avid Dancer although its focus could be a little narrower. I find myself returning to some of the catchier dance beats, but some of the slower numbers haven’t quite captured my full attention. Regardless, there is enough substance here to merit a looking forward to what Jacob Dillion Summers has in store for us in the future.
