My Mexican brothers Rey Pila just shared a new song today from their upcoming LP and I’m once again enamored with what the band is doing.  Their style is certainly new wave, but with some killer beats and energetic choruses that will surely have you jumping up and down as you jam along with the band.  Today’s single, “What a Nice Surprise” is no different though it might just be their most pop inspired tune to date.  Vamos a escuchar.

Rey Pila will drop The New Sugar on May 5th via Cult Records.

Riding high off the release of her stunning album, After, Lady Lamb The Beekeeper is gracing our great city with her incredible live act that is at once intimate and high energy. Aly Spaltro is notorious for her powerful vocals and while these vocals serve as the backbone to her music, it’s impossible to overlook the rest of the musical elements that we encountered on her most recent release that made for a large collection of excellent and infectious pop tunes. Lady Lamb will have you dancing your ass off one minute with sunny pop driven by the bouncing percussion, and then pulling at your heartstrings in the next with a stripped down tune. At only ten dollars, there is really no reason that you shouldn’t be at Lambert’s this Friday night. Don’t miss out on this one.

Dreamy Song from Vaadat Charigim

vadFirst, I’d like to personally take note of the fact that I was listener 666 to this tune, so that’s got to be a good sign.  But, secondly, please do yourself a favor by spending some time with Vaadat Charigim, the Israel act I’ve been loving for some time.  Their initial introduction had them labeled under the moniker of psychedelia, which is easy to see some of those touches, but this latest song really seems to get as far away from that habit as one can go, while still looking back.  There’s a beautiful hollowness to it, drifting subtly through your ears; the song rises at times, but in a pretty steady fashion that listener’s will appreciate. Just another reason to fall for these guys before Burger Records releases their album, Sinking as a Stone, on  May 19th.

Great New Single From The Mary Onettes

untitledA quick search here on ATH for The Mary Onettes will quickly yield a plethora of results telling you all you need to know about our love affair for the band.  Since the release of their 2014 album Portico, we haven’t heard much from the band so I was overjoyed today to hear news of this stellar single “Ruins”.  The track features some beautiful guest vocals from Selebrities leading lady Maria Usbeck combined with the typical brooding, snyth heavy bit of pop we’ve come to expect from the band.  Those looking for a take with you version of the new single can purchase an MP3 via iTunes.

jackoJacco Gardner has been an ATH favorite, and as he prepares us to listen to his new record, Hynophobia, it seems that’s he constructing music that fits the album’s title.  The first minute of the album’s title track has this hypnotic build to it, wrapping up the listener in the aesthetic pleasure of Gardner’s work before allowing his whispering vocals to gently croon in to the track.  It’s his patience in songwriting that really has drawn me closer to listening to his music; you’ve got to have a patient ear, but in doing so, you’ll ultimately be rewarded by your repeated listens.  Look for the new LP on May 5th via Polyvinyl.

Slightly Late To The Party: Willie J Healey

10542798_728759890499640_6818338964530897890_nWillie J Healey is an Oxford based musician who is currently making what his Facebook page calls “Rock ‘n ‘stroll,” which I’m interpreting as a kind of low-key surf rock style. “HD Malibu,” the track for you below, shows this genre with a little bit of a bluesy spin on the surf sound of thing. The vocals are a large part of the track, Healey showing off his dulcet pipes atop the jangly guitar and percussion. I’m digging this track, and I look forward to hearing the rest of the HD Malibu EP, which is coming May 11th.

Fresh Song from The Sandwitches

sandyA lot of people have been talking about this song from the Sandwitches today, and they keep throwing out David Lynch’s name.  I guess I get that, but it seems a pretty basic bitch thing to say…it’s easy to throw out.  For me, I’m focusing on the exploration, sonically speaking, of the band since their inception.  There’s a lot of playful artistry when considering how the group deals with the empty space in this song, and presumably on their newest album, Our Toast.  I’m glad to see the group taking on this haunting sort of beauty, and I’ve got high expectations for when the album’s released on June 9th via Empty Cellar Records.

Soft Pysch From J Fernandez

11084092_637493659683995_6037841020121103511_oJ Fernandez is a Chicago based musician who is on the cusp of releasing his debut album of low-key psychedelic influenced rock. The song below is the first single from that upcoming album, Many Levels Of Laughter, which is out June 9th here in the U.S. “Read My Mind” makes me excited to hear that new album, as the laid-back tune packs a subtle kick that will linger in your head all day long. While it may not seem like it at first, this song has a lot going on within its 3:45 span, including retr0-synth that runs through the duration and of course, Fernandez’s oddly calming monotone vocals.

Playful Pop from Summer Fiction

summerThere’s a playful quality that comes with the simplicity of the new Summer Fiction tune.  It reeks of early Dent May, which isn’t a bad thing, mind you, as we raved about that release.  The focus is surely on the vocal delivery, with a light bit of piano and percussion backing things the entire way through. It bodes well for the Mancunian songwriter and his new effort, which will probably offer tracks just as playful as the one that follows below.  Look for Himalaya to be released on June 16th; should be something worthy of spending time with during the summer twilight hours.

Fashawn’s long-awaited sophomore effort

Fresno, CA rapper Fashawn’s 2009 independently released debut album, Boy Meets World, received almost universal critical acclaim with heavy focus on his age at the time–21–and the fact that someone so young could articulate the struggle so well. Many drew comparisons to hip-hop royalty Nas and the fact that Nas was 21 when he released his near perfect hip-hop classic Illmatic. Over the past six years Fashawn has released a handful of mixtapes, a couple collaborative albums, and an EP, but his latest release, The Ecology, shows that Fashawn’s debut was not just a flash in the pan. Nas himself has taken a liking to Fashawn as Nas both appears on the album and was instrumental in signing Fashawn to independent record label Mass Appeal Records. Highlights from The Ecology include “Guess Who’s Back”, “Letter F”, “Man of the House”, and “F.T.W.” but the entire album is worth checking out. Other guest appearances on the album include Dom Kennedy, Aloe Blacc, and BJ The Chicago Kid. The Ecology can be streamed or downloaded for free via DJBooth or it can be purchased from iTunes.
