Shannon and the Clams Return

Shannon and The ClamsThis track has been everywhere the last few days, but I’m just getting back to civilization, so excuse my tardiness. It’s good to see that Shannon and the Clams are back at it, and they return with a sultry twang that should definitely put them on more people’s radar.  It’s a sound that falls right in line with the band’s nostalgic nods they’ve been making over the years; this time the group rolls through the track slowly allowing Shannon’s voice to be the superstar (it always was).  Their new album, Gone by the Dawn, comes September 11th via Hardly Art.  Check the video for the song HERE.

Show Review: Other Lives @ The Mohawk (6.11)

Other LivesThursday had the ATH crew out in full swing to catch a night of great music and good times at The Mohawk. Early door times had openers taking the stage with the sun not quite yet set, but that didn’t deter Dark Rooms and Riothorse Royale from providing entertaining sets to a growing crowd for headliners Other Lives.

If you weren’t there for this night of stunning tunes, sucks to suck, but read on to see just what you missed out on. Or if you were lucky enough to be there, relive the night and click through some rad photos by the ineffable B.Gray.

Simplistic Yet Delightful Folk From Scott Bartenhagen

scottCalifornia’s Scott Bartenhagen just signed to the roster over at New Professor Music of L.A., and in a few short weeks on June 30th, he’ll be releasing an EP called Black Dane. “Beacons,” the song below from that EP, shows the songwriters ability to spin a delightful folksy tune with very little outside of vocals, guitar, and minimal percussion, that is, until the track is almost finished. When the song starts it seems quite mild, and while that is essentially the case, where the heart of this track lies is in the vocal performance of Bartenhagen, whose voice is crisp until he pushes it to its bluesy brink. Though mild, the song takes off at the end and adds in other elements to fully bring it alive. Take a listen.

ATH @ X Games Austin 2015

ATH was invited to attend X Games and we agreed based on the strength of he local lineup that graced the big stage during the day leading up to the headliners and then on to the Super Stage mega headliners. The cool part was that my access allowed me to moonlight as a sports photographer. We all have a history of skateboarding or riding a bike or something rad like that, don’t we? I worked in a bike shop to buy my Haro freestyle bike and still have my Lance Mountain special edition in the office. To get to see some guys like Dennis McCoy and Tony Hawk still riding and skating at a high level and catch the innovation coming from so many guys from Austin along with rally car and truck racing and maniacs on dirt bikes, it was an exciting change up to my usual subject matter. I got a little twitchy not shooting f2.8 or bigger and ISO 200? What is that? I don’t leave the house for less than ISO 2500. #concertphotographerjokes

So join me as we take a trip down memory lane and talk X Games…

Funky New Wave(ish) Pop From Paul Smith & The Intimations

shoot dec 06 press

You may know Paul Smith from his frontman position in Maximo Park, but you probably didn’t know that this gentleman also puts out his own music as well (If you did know this, my apologies). He’s shared with us a track from a new record that he and his backing band, The Intimations, are going to be releasing on August 21st called Contradictions. This first song, “Coney Island (4th of July)” is a proper pop groove: the guitar sound twangs in as the new-wave vocals paint a picture of a time and a place in the past. I’m enjoying this combination of 80’s pop and modern elements. What do you think?

New Camp Lo album

Bronx-natives and 20 year hip-hop veterans Camp Lo have continued their trend of putting out an album every four to five years with their newest release, Ragtime Hightimes. Camp Lo knocked their debut album Uptown Saturday Night out of the park in 1997, and while the quality of their music has remained the same, they have never achieved as much success. Anyone familiar with Camp Lo will remember them most for their hit single “Luchini/This Is It” which samples Dynasty’s “Adventurs In Music Land“. Some of their noteworthy singles since then include 2002’s “Glow” and 2008’s “Lumdi“. For Ragtime Hightimes, Camp Lo returned to working with frequent collaborator, famed hip-hop producer Ski. The video for one of Camp Lo’s singles off their newest album is below.

Jesse Payne Gives You Post Folk

jessepWhatever post folk is, I’m not one hundred percent sure, but Jesse Payne has been deemed thus. Citing origins in the Southeastern part of the U.S., his sound blends americana and folk elements as well as these subtle yet enticing vocals. I’m sharing this track with you today from Heirloom, Payne’s upcoming record which is set to be released on August 14th through Capture Music. “Origins,” opens with this infectious guitar riff that spirals out through the track and makes for a simmering folk track.

Another One From Heather Woods Broderick

heather+woods+broderickChances are that if I hear a new track from Heather Woods Broderick along the way to the July 10th release of her latest LP, Glider, I’ll be throwing it your way so you can get as excited as I am for this new album. The track we’ve got today, “Mama Shelter,” is one that features the vocal performance at the very core of the song. Instrumentally, it’s pretty minimalistic, but sharp waves of synth juxtapose with the twang of the vocals to make it sound like an electro-americana track. Take a listen and look out for Glider out on Western Vinyl soon.

Late to the Party: Jack + Eliza

15389_868043193280575_9085091377776735403_nSometimes we get busy and sometimes we miss some truly superb music as a result.  Jack + Eliza is one of my recent brain farts and today I hope to remedy such an atrocity.  The band is a  young duo hailing from NYC who craft a throwback style of pop music featuring a folk inspired, harmony laden sound.  This single “Oh No” should cause you to fall in love with the duo.  Enjoy.

Jack + Eliza will drop their debut album, Gentle Warnings, on August 7th via Yebo Music.

Shimmery Dream Pop From Savage Sister

savage sisterSavage Sister are a three part outfit from Chicago that make dream pop and shoegaze music. I stumbled upon this track, “Pale Surrender” and knew I had to share it with you all, as this is the perfect song to turn up loud on a Friday. Drenched in reverb, the whole tune seems to just barely waft in through your speakers; the high pitched synths dominate the track, but as it progresses you get some more of the percussion in the mix, as well as the incomprehensible vocals, which work as another instrumental element to the sound. Savage Sister have an album in the works called Speechless, but the date is TBA, so keep an ear out.
