Noisey Rocker From Philadelphia Collins

11162081_1588155164801357_5294979429175898507_nPhiladelphia Collins is a new project from Devin McKnight of Speedy Ortiz and drummer Theo Hartlett formerly of Ovlov.  The dudes also brought in a ton of friends to work on their new EP entitled Derp Swervin’ due out July 24th on Exploding in Sound Records.  To preview the new material, check out new single “Sofa Queen” featuring lead vocals from Ellen Kempner of Palehound.  I’m loving the quiet beginning of the tune which eventually builds into this intense, noisey rocker.  Ya dig.

ATX Spotlight: Tiger Waves Are Back

tiger wavesWay back in 2012 Tiger Waves were on the cusp of releasing an album, but sometimes things go awry and plans fall through. The future seemed bleak for that album to ever find its way to your speakers and your hearts, that is until yesterday, when these locals posted this lost album in its entirety on their Bandcamp page for you to delight in the tracks that should have been. In this way, these masters of indie pop have announced that Tiger Waves are back, and we should be paying attention again. Are you? Take a listen to one of the lost songs below, called “Joyous Occasion,” which is a solid pop gem and crosses surf and electro pop with a Shins-esque spin, and lookout for new tracks from the band soon.

Joe Pernice Joins with Budo of Macklemore

rogersI spend the majority of my year teaching 13 year olds, so maybe this is the day (even though school’s out) when our musical tastes finally meet.  I’ve been a huge Joe Pernice fan for some time, though he’s had a few hits and misses here and there, but I was surprised he decided to work with Macklemore‘s Budo.  It just doesn’t fit, and yet it does.  The thing is, what matters most is the music, and the collaboration of Roger Lion definitely is successful.  Budo’s production creates the perfect soundscape for Pernice’s unique voice to come in to play.  Just imagine the old DJ Shadow working with one of your favorite singers.  The duo will release their Roger Lion album on September 18th without ever having met in person…or so the story goes.

Instrumental Jam from High Tides

tidyIt takes a lot to capture my attention if a track is instrumental.  I know a lot of instrumental tunes are used for artistic purposes within the structure of an album, but to present an album’s worth of such tracks takes a lot to grab my attention. That being said, this tune from High Tides has definitely piqued my interest. It’s a pretty smoothly constructed jam, flowing along like a boat in water (thus the track’s title?).  It’s the sort of song that fits perfectly near the end of your day; it soothes perfectly, calming when you need it most.  Look for their self-titled album on Rad Cult come July 31st.

Introducing: Moon Types

moonieAnother day, another great song coming to you from Jigsaw Records. This time the label has teamed up with new Swedish act Moon Types, and dammit if these aren’t some of the enjoyable indiepop songs I’ve come across in the last few weeks.  I like how there’s a Southern rambling in the execution of the guitar chords, accompanied by these great male/female vocal pieces that perfect the purity of pop songwriting. They’ll be releasing their Know the Reason 7″ later this summer, so keep your eyes peeled for your new favorite Swedish band.

Hidden Gem Records Release Colorwheel Compilation

FrontJpgSmallThis Colorwheel Compilation popped up in my mailbox earlier this week, so I’ve been spinning it for the last few days.  First, Hidden Gem Records is a little label in Philly, not unlike our own ATH label, just trying to put out tunes they love.  Second, the compilation was always going to win me over, compiling bands we’ve already filled these pages with such as Tape Waves, Night Panther, the Death of Pop.  You can stream several of the tracks that appear on the compilation below, and for those fans of great pop music, you’ll want to go HERE to grab yourself a copy.  It comes on a rad swirled colored vinyl.

Show Review: Helio Sequence @ Red 7 (6/9)

With the weather warming up a bit, we decided it was best to attend the Helio Sequence with 3/4 of the ATH team in attendance; you’ve got to have strength in numbers in case you get dehydrated.  The band blew into town fresh on the heels of their latest, self-titled, album.  They brought along Portland’s Lost Lander as openers, and treated us to a set of hits and new favorites.

ATX Spotlight: Comforter Ready Album

11270397_405357546315566_474241612007102356_oTons of great music is coming out of Austin lately, and Comforter have kept my attention with their first few singles.  Their latest, “Hardies,” opens up slowly, twinkling guitar chiming in the foreground.  As the drums kick in the song takes off, soon joined by resounding backing vocals to emphasize the lyrical content.  The drum work also adds a nice little pace to the track, while the emotional warmth steadily climbs in the listeners ear.  They’ll be releasing their new album for Merdurhaus Records this Saturday at Cheer Up Charlies with Alex Napping and Summer Salt.  Definitely something that should be on your radar going into the weekend.

You Already Love Bob Collins

11263981_837624092974427_2364401972923408431_nIt’s been a really great resurgence month for The Dentists, with two of the band’s songwriters unleashing new tunes/albums. First there was Treasures of Mexico, and now we’ve got Bob Collins and the Full Nelson.  He’s releasing his new record, Telescopic Victory Kiss, and though slightly different, it hits as beautifully as one would expect.  It’s a power-pop gem of a tune, mixed in with a little bit of an Elvis Costello or Ted Leo approach to how things are delivered vocally.  I’m pretty sure you’ll have this playing for the rest of the day.  Look for the album to see a release next week via Jigsaw Records.
