Diet Cig Share New Single

dietcig

I’m pretty sure we’ve shared some other great tracks from New York’s Diet Cig, and this is a yet another testament of their deserving place in your listening catalogue. They duo has a new single out digitally as of today called “Sleep Talk,” and you can take a listen to it below. You’ll note the prominent vocal performance of Alex Luciano, whose honest vocals and raw delivery dominate the song as she sings about a return home. Then you have the drums that take the wheel of the track and bring the tempo to a new speed as the song gets a little wild within the alt-rock genre. The single and it’s b-side, “Dinner Date” are out in physical format on September 18th through Art is Hard and Father/Daughter Records. Pre-order it here.

Buy This Debutantes 7″ from Emotional Response

11020761_10153147013484577_8079677916334810216_nThe two sides of this new 7″ from the Debutantes are pretty brilliant, yet completely distinct in their respective sounds. The A Side “Adams Apples” is the punishing bit of noise rock with an underlying current of pop sensibility, and very likely to break through your speakers…in a really good way.  The flip side has “Kids,” which is a much softer look at the Irish act. This song stays true to the historical undercurrent of indiepop, though the recording has this endearing distortion to it, so as not to be too shimmering.  The 7″ just came out from the really awesome folks over at Emotional Response, so you can grab yourself a copy of it right HERE. Oh, and if you order it now, it comes with a 4 song download that makes up the band’s debut EP.

Ultra Lo-Fi/ Punk From Childbirth

nastygrrlsIf you’re looking for pretty and clean girl pop then you’ve come to the wrong post. Childbirth is a supergroup comprised of members from Chastity Belt, Tacocat and Pony Time and word on the street is that they’re coming back with their sophomore record, Women’s Rights which is due October 2nd on Suicide Squeeze Records. This single from that record is called “Nasty Grrls,” and features perfectly imperfect punk vocals that chime in and out of the mix enumerating the rough edges and habits of these nasty gurlz while the guitars are fuzzy and lo-fi. The whole track will lodge itself into your brain for hours if you’re not careful, but maybe that’s a good thing. Get nasty with these ladies.

Austin, My Two Cents by Norman Wanklord

The last few months, anyone living in the Austin area, or anyone following Austinites, has surely been bombarded with this proclamation that the Austin Music Scene is dying, or in danger of dying out.  I’ve mostly stayed out of it, helped out where I could, offered advice here and there, but steered clear…that is until now.

Feel free to click below, leave comments calling me a jerk, and everything in between, but trust me, I’m aware this is just another opinion floating off into the great Internet void.  Read more

Punk Track From PWR BTTM

pwrbttm

PWR BTTM are a punk duo comprised of Ben Hopkins and Liv Bruce who have put out a few EPs and demos, but are awaiting the release of their first full length record Ugly Cherries.  The title track from that upcoming record is below, and when you listen you’ll hear classic punk elements, but what makes this song striking for me are the vocals, which softens the vibe a bit and is different from what you would expect. Meanwhile, the guitar is still buzzy and those vocals gain grit and teeth as the song goes on. Lookout for more from these two and get ready for the new record due out September 18th via Father/Daughter Records and Miscreant Records.

Wimps Sign to Kill Rock Stars

wimpsNew of the Wimps signing with Kill Rock Stars is both a good thing and a bad thing.  It means they’re leaving their label End of Time Records, who we love (sad), but they moved onto a larger stage with KRS (good).  Ultimately, this just means they’ve now got a larger platform for their jittering punk rock, known for rapturous live shows and albums of exuberance.  They’ll be releasing the Super Me EP, and this first single definitely highlights the band’s sound, filled with bouncing rhythms and just enough angst to make you feel young. Give it a listen and look for the EP on August 7th.

Tranquil Guitar Duet Thursday

guitarThis is a little different than what I normally share with you all, but nonetheless something that deserves your attention. James Elkington and Nathan Salsburg are on their way to release their sophomore album of guitar duets called Ambsace on September 18th, but before that record comes out through Paradise of Bachelors, the gentlemen have given us a delightful track to sink our teeth into. This song below, “Up of Stairs” is three minutes and forty nine seconds of sublime acoustic guitar work, blending both folk and americana sound. This was the first song I chose to listen today, and I can say that it was a calm and serene start to my day. Won’t you join me?

Fresh Tune from Cold Beat

coldbeatThose of you who’ve missed out on the work of Hannah Lew, please go back in time and visit Grass Widow.  Or, you could look at her most recent release Over Me with her current project, Cold Beat.  She’s started her own label, and she’ll be releasing the group’s second album, Into the Air, which takes on a different thematic perspective this time around.  Interestingly, it seems that Lew is writing of her struggles to survive in San Francisco, despite changes to the city’s cultura landscape; that’s something that seemingly rings true to with a lot of large cities of late. Give a listen, and look for the album on September 4th via Crime on the Moon.

Missing I Was a King

iwasakingIn the last few weeks, some of the bands I thought were gone have come back (It Hugs Back/Crayon Fields), so I went in search of what was up with one of my favorite acts, I Was a King.  First, I noticed they had recently released a song they’d worked on with Robyn Hitchcock. It’s a beautiful tune, indicative of the growth they’ve made since their early days as a band. Also, and I’m not sure if the two are related at all, but the band has also announced they’re in the studio with Norman of Teenage Fanclub and Joe Perince…looks like we’ll have a new LP form the band soon. Here’s that lost track that’s just appeared.

Crayon Fields Are Back!!!

thecrayonfields01It’s fair to say my love affair with heralded Chapter Music officially began when I discovered The Crayon Fields. I’m pretty sure I trolled the band, got them to play one of our SXSW shows at the Ghost Room, and fawned over anything they did.  Still, the band’s been relatively quiet as a whole since 2009, though various members like Geoff O’Connor have been plying their trade at solo work.  Today, we can rejoice rejoice rejoice; the band is back with a new offering, perfecting the beautiful adherence to pop that brought me to them long ago.  There’s some great production value on here too, filling in the space with synth work and female backing vocals; it’ really fleshes out a near brilliant sound.  They’re releasing No One Deserves You via Chapter on September 25th, so be on the lookout.
