Folksy Tune From Canary

canaryIt may be a Tuesday, but I’m still trying to shake the weekend off, which means I’m in the mood for tunes on the folksier side of things. This track, “Women’s Business” from Australian band Canary is a great example of such a song; from it’s subtle beginnings to its growing arc, I’m fully on board. Eerie little waves of distortion flutter in and out of the mix with simple vocals and acoustic guitar strumming to start, but then the band adds in some clacking percussion to spice up the track a bit as the vocals show their strength and the song grows and expands. Have a listen and go scoop the track up for free over here.

Flatliner’s Black Medicine Preorder

So, you missed the Austin Record Label Flea Market, eh? You could have bought this EP. You should have bought this EP.

Austin has a growing electronic scene, no longer just dance pop and party jams (though we love that, too), people like Jesse Straight and Adam Fangsrud, heretofore known as Flatliner, are building songs on stage with a yard sale of synthesizers, new and old, to create layers of waveforms and beats. The Black Medicine EP is up for preorder via Holodeck, here. Just so happens, they did play the Flea Market and damn, it was good.

Check out the track “Blasted Highway” for a taste…

King Friday Spin Some Old School Pop

kingEveryone loves a good pop song, and it turns out that King Friday aren’t any different than the rest of us. They’re a songwriting powerhouse, already on their tenth album, which comes out later this week.  It’s titled the Big Strange, and on listening to the first few singles, it looks to be filled with the paisley side of psychedelia, honoring the tradition of incredible harmonies. As of right now, they’re releasing an album every three months, and a video every few weeks.  Take a listen and see if this is up your alley.

Scuzzy Tune from Dan Svizeny

dannI think the recording on this track is what’s got me hooked.  It’s really muddy, with Dan Svizeny‘s vocals buried way low in the mix, almost melting into the track as another instrument.  You can hear the sonic connection from label mates like Cloud Nothings and Best Coast, applying grittiness to traditional pop structures for the purpose of differentiation; even with the muddy quality, there’s still an evident bounce to the tune.  Grab yourself a copy of Dan’s new album, Whitecaps, now from Group Tightener.

Fresh EP from Power of Satan

PrintIt’s always interesting to me how music filters and influences places all over the world, which I feel is the case with Power of Satan‘s newest EP. The Japanese band has just released their new four song EP on Bleeding Gold Records, and there’s touchstones of all things indie rock in the last few decades.  I hear little bits of Pavement, but I can also hear a lot of that angular guitar pop that people give Flying Nun credit for; it might seem all over the place with those touchstones, but it’s really a well put together release.  You can grab the EP for NYOP (which means throw some dollars their way).

New Music from DIV I DED

divided2The first few seconds of this new single from DIV I DED sets you in line for some traditional female-fronted pop music, but hold on, as the band fills the space behind Viktorie’s voice with this bubbling drum work.  Success in this tune comes via the juxtaposition of the lofty vocals contrasted against the sonic exploration of the band.  I can see where fans of Beach House or Widowspeak would fall in love here, though things are quite a bit louder in your speakers here. The band will be releasing their album, Born to Sleep on cassette via Fleeting Youth Records on July 21st.

New Snow Tha Product mixtape

Since her 2010 mixtape debut, Snow Tha Product has consistently proven herself to be one of the best rappers of the most recent era in hip-hop. She even gets my vote for the best active female rapper, without a doubt. Snow Tha Product’s most recent outing, The Rest Comes Later, is more of the consistency we’re used to from her: solid beats, incredible delivery, thought provoking song content, and the usual smattering of English/Spanglish/Spanish stemming from her Mexican-American upbringing in San Diego. She kicks off “The Rest Comes Later tour” next week, and the last leg of the tour has her coming through the Parish in Austin on August 14th. The Rest Comes Later can be streamed or downloaded for free via DatPiff. The video for her lead single on the mixtape “Bet That I Will” is below.

Spastic Rock from Hierophants

11406892_873158592739142_6444236918764143221_nI don’t really no too much about Hierophants, other than they’re based in Australia and on Goner Records.  Both things are pretty much a guarantee of my own personal enjoyment but I want you to be the judge on your own.  The song opens up in a stutter of garage rock, but it doesn’t stay there for too long, instead blasting off into a spastic land where few bands dare to go.  The end of the track is something all together different from the opening moments, closing in this oddball bounce then moving to a crunchy outro; it all makes for a listen that you don’t get every day, which is well enough in my book. Parallax Error, the album, will be out in September.

Quiet Tune from It Hugs Back

10339324_10153356917913502_2714167228139630560_oIt’s been some time since I’ve heard from London’s It Hugs Back, but perhaps that’s my own ignorance.  The group was one of the first acts that I caught on to when shoegaze came back into the spotlight, but for their new album, it seems like they’re stretching the sound quite a bit.  Personally, I was drawn immediately to their lead single, “Somnolence,” which stretches out into five minutes of really elegant, yet soft, pop music. I love the way the vocal carefully sits atop the entire track, as if its just resting there. If you’re into it, you can grab Slow Wave now.
