Show Review: Mac Demarco @ Stubbs (10.20)

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetExpectations were quite high for Tuesday night at Stubbs. Riding high off the release of Another One, Mac Demarco and company came to a sold out venue to share the new tunes as well as jam out some of the old. Playing to quite the young crowd, though one who has probably seen the band in some capacity—over the past year, Mac has played not only one, but two of Austin’s festivals. For those who have seen Demarco’s live act, the night was quite predictable, but nevertheless enjoyable. Read on for my full recap.

A Treat from Joe McAlinden

joeDid you buy Linden‘s album, Rest and Be Thankful? If not, you should head over to Slumberland and pick it up immediately. But, more importantly is that last week Joe (the man behind Linden and collaborator with the likes to Teenage Fanclub) tossed out a bonus track from a recent EP. It’s such a soft track that the most powerful moments come in the way Joe holds his notes; the accompanying instrumentation only seems to emphasize those little notes. Just simple beauty, that’s all, which is all the more reason to get yourself into the work McAlinden is crafting. Try this one on for size.

ATX Spotlight: Stream the Sweet Talk Album

DoublePerfectCover_iTunes-300x300We’ve already rocked a few singles for you, but now that Sweet Talk‘s new LP is finally on the streets, it’s time for you to see what a great listen it is. Not that my voice matters too much, but I’d have to say that this is one of the city’s top LPs in 2015. Double Perfect is fueled by high energy rifts, and it holds some interesting musical turns in the album’s continuity, like “Wrong”” moving into “Tightrope” for a change of pace. It’ll also become pretty clear to you that while you can lump the band in with the ATX punk scene, there’s a whole lot of talent behind the guitar work…making the record more than just your average fare. You’d be smart to pick it up immediately via 12XU.

New Video from Crayon Fields

11703409_10153492077879181_8232890633749222260_oAfter being relatively quiet for the past few years while various members worked on other projects, Crayon Fields burst back into my heart with their new album, No One Deserves You. It’s a pop record of the best sort, filling your ears with delicious melodies and the entrancing voice of Geoff O’ Connor. One of the album’s best tracks just got a brand new video treatment, and the video has the perfect feel for both the song and the record. This is honestly one of my favorite tunes this year, and the video only reaffirms its power. Buy the album now from Chapter Music.

Brand New Single From Blaenavon

10514738_720240444695657_404149877485594319_nI’d be a terrible person if I didn’t share this new song with you called “Destiny’s Mild” from up and coming U.K. band Blaenavon.  The sound is a mixture of angst ridden Twilight sad and some of the more upbeat and pop sounds of Foals.  I’d think with two big name drops like that, you’re already hitting play and enjoying.

The Miss World EP will come out on October 30th via Trangressive Records.

Le Rug Readies Huge Collection of Tracks

lerug1You think a collection takes the hits and puts it all down to a best of, but in the case of the forthcoming release from Le Rug, you’re going to get far more than you’ve bargained; you’re going to get 70 brand new tracks…some dedicated to our presidents, but all filled with hooks. Ray Weiss, the man behind the project, has definitely put his time in here, and each song brims with the need to play it over and over again. I want you to turn this one up really loud and tell me that you don’t like it; I bet you can’t. You can grab Game Over right HERE from Fleeting Youth Records.

New EP from Les Bicyclettes Blanches

lbbWe’re not going to give you the full EP, but you should definitely go and grab yourself a copy of this forthcoming EP from Les Bicyclettes Blanches. At first I got stuck with the buzzing of the guitar sound, compounded by the seemingly stuttering vocal delivery, but the crashing  cymbals added near the middle of the track definitely kept me hooked going through. The tune sounds familiar, yet not quite so. That distinctiveness makes me thing their Einfugen EP will be something out of the ordinary, and worth a listen. You can grab it this week from Bleeding Gold.

You Should Listen to Robert Sotelo Group

robertI won’t go on and on about this act, as I know little, but in my goal to find some new things that aren’t getting coverage all over the place, I came into this new single from Robert Sotelo Group. It’s a strange amalgam of all things hip and cool right now; it has a vocal delivery akin to Kurt Vile, yet the careful approach to pop craftsmanship like a Deerhunter. I will admit that it almost seems unfinished, but in that aspect, it only encourages you to go back and listen to more. Not too much more info on the group other than they hail for London…this should be the city’s next big thing.

Cheap Trick followed by CHVRCHES seems like a pretty cool back-to-back blanket sit down session at the Orange stage. Grimes and then Wu Tang? L7 to Venom? All good dance-through, sweat-through, party-through scenarios.
