The Besnard Lakes Return

2015BandEveryone loves a good Canadian indie rock band, especially The Besnard Lakes, so it’s great news that this group is back with a new album on the horizon. They’ve returned with this new track, “Golden Lion,” as well as the announcement of an EP and a full length. This 12″ EP, which features the track below, will be out November 13th, while the full length record, A Coliseum Complex Museum, won’t be out until January 22nd of next year. Regardless, the song that they’ve shared with us today has got a snarling swirl of psychedelic to it, made softer by those falsetto’ed vocals.

I’m Enjoying This Track from Wovoka Gentle

wovokaDidn’t have a clue who Wovoka Gentle was going into this track, just a push in the right direction. I’m quite impressed with this tune and the layers of work that went into crafting such exhilarating pop music. At moments the song seemingly takes on the roleof a loop project, using vocals wrapped around one another to create a huge coating of harmony. Still, put your ear closer to the speaker and you’ll hear little glimmers of Americana/folk in the actual musicianship; it’s all continuously filled these airy orchestral touches too. On November 27th the group is set to release their Wovoka Gentle EP Blue, so keep your ears peeled for more delightful tunes.

ATX Spotlight: Ben Millburn Readies New EP

benmillburnWe’d like to take this time to really welcome Ben Millburn to Austin, though he’s been here working on his debut EP for some time. But, the Louisiana native is here for good, or for now, and he’s ready for you to hear what he’s been working on…and what’s been running through his mind. Strange Love and Consequence, his latest EP, features this powerful track, brimming with the perfect backing harmony and this swelling of huge guitar riffs that ring out in your speaker long after the tune is over. It’s a refreshing listen, not sounding like much else within the confines of the city’s current musical landscape. Give a warm welcome to Ben, if you haven’t already, and grab his new EP on December 11th via Sunglass Mustache Records.

ACL 2015 WE2 In Pictures: Saturday Edition

TV On The RadioCollection Two…

Saturday’s lineup was feeling a bit weak as I rubbed the sleep from my eyes, but I soldiered on and ended up having a great day. Despite being first, I still contend that FIDLAR was the most rock and roll we got in any 45 minute slice at ACL this year. Come at me, I’ll argue it and win. The “Sweater Song” done with meows for the verses? Can’t beat that. It was also home to the most legit beer-throwing. After that, I chased music and photos equally ending the night with a brief amount of deadmau5‘s crazy stage setup in the viewfinder and a stroll through the Waterloo Records tent. My real headliner was TV on the Radio; such a great set and about the best we have seen from the band in years – concise and on point. In between, we have Ryn Weaver, Glass Animals, Houndmouth, locals Sounds Del Mar, a very solid set from Unknown Mortal Orchestra and a revisit of Jose Gonzalez.

Click through and get lost in the memories…

Fresh Track from Winter

WinterI know there’s always tons to filter through when it regards to SXSW, but one of the bands I caught last year that I picked for success in the upcoming year was Winter. And, here they are with a great new single that looks to be part of their follow up to the excellent Supreme Blue Dream. It’s filled with this shimmering guitar that casually drifts through the song, though the guitars crash with a nice fuzzy wave during the chorus, perfectly matching the vocal of Samira. No official word on the single’s release or a new record, but based on the buzz, expect to hear more from the band soon…also catch them touring the states, including an Austin date at Hotel Vegas.

Great Power Pop From The Singles

12079300_10154232164475898_1374419231077298841_nSometimes we can all use a little bit of power pop in our lives to rejuvenate our spirits and brighten up the day.  Today we will be receiving our spice of head nodding music from L.A. based band The Singles.  The track they have for us entitled “Sweet Tooth” is truly hard not to like.  Having been around now for over a decade, it’s hard to believe that the group can still churn out such tasty hits.

Stay tuned for an upcoming release in 2016 from The Singles.

New Tunes on Emotional Response Records

erThe great thing about the vinyl boom is it seems like everyone’s out there making music, and even more people are out there to release it for them. Still, with some many boutique labels, you’ve got to really search for the right place to release music, or even to buy it. One of those labels that I’ve gravitated towards is Emotional Response Records. They’ve just announced two brand new Split 7″s, and I love them both equally, though for separate reasons. I’m absolutely stuck on Oakland Health Academy (members of Boyracer, American Culture) and their track; it’s featured below and I’d love for someone to deny the power in that song…the feedback on the guitars comes in all the right places. They split the 7″ with Heavy Pet. But, another release is the Enemy Anemone/Cougar Vox Split 7″. That EA track is just this joyous blast of pop music, completed in an endearing ramshackle fashion. Bounce = fun. Stream the songs below, and grab the vinyl from Emotional Response.

Young Hunting Have Us Blue Dreaming

386494_10150529377904666_739898880_nBear with me, this track isn’t the freshest jam on the street, as it came out at the very end of September, but it is a good track that deserves your attention and listening ears on this Wednesday. Young Hunting are in the business of making chilled out indie rock that would suit their California lifestyle. As you’ll hear from “Blue Dream” below, there’s a lot going on, but all these elements culminate to bring you a graceful and mellowed out tune. The guitar riffs seem to roll in and out like waves lapping on the shore, while the vocals and arching chorus feels like a cool sea breeze. Take a listen and enjoy.

Electro-Pop from Oceans

efeEarlier in the year we brought you some smooth grooves from Oceans, the Finnish artist working with our friends over at Soliti Music; they just sent us a brand new track that we wanted to throw out to you in the middle of the week. It’s one of those electronic tunes that builds upon itself, propelled by a propulsive beat beneath the soulful lyrics that echo through your speakers. There’s something compelling in the simplicity of the approach to, which bodes well for the man behind the song, Efe Tekkanat. His new Thrill EP will be released by the label on October 30th. There’s also a video HERE if you’re into those sorts of things.
