Check Out This New Video From The Goon Sax

goonsaxEveryone loves a good stripped down pop song, so this video from The Goon Sax should be a perfect treat for you on this Thursday. The Goon Sax are a trio of youths out of Brisbane who make simple yet catchy pop tunes, and as you’ll see in this music video, rely on their lovely balance of male/female vocals. “Boyfriend” is their latest single from their upcoming record, and the music video features the band blank-facedly playing the track, alternating with shots of the frontman and his ideal boyfriend. I definitely got a little chuckle out of the video, as well as got this song stuck in my head for the rest of the day.Their debut release, Up To Anything is due out in March of next year via Chapter Records, so get excited for that.

Hear New Echo Courts

echoBright psych pop always gets me, so it should come as no surprise that the North Carolina crew, Echo Courts are high on my list today with their latest single. In all honesty, there’s way more pop going on here, and their playing style reminds me of our own Shivery Shakes…hinting at bits of jangle while bringing on some really great harmonies to the vocal floor. The band’s readying their own No Damage EP, which is coming your way on January 18th. Should be filled with hooks and hits; look for it via Already Dead Tapes and Records.

Slightly Late To The Sound Is Lovv Party

12105692_974108899317683_5383572954570277394_n Sound Is Lovv released their debut EP, Shipwrecks, back in October, so forgive me on the tardiness, but it’s important that I share this track with you all. This band is based in L.A. and from what I’ve heard of this most recent album, they make streamlined shoegaze that is heavy on the instrumentation. The track below, “Take Me With You,” is a blistering rock track, but it’s a little different take on shoe gaze than I’m normally down with– the guitars aren’t too distorted and sound fairly clean, along with the cymbal heavy percussion. Take a listen and see what you think.

You can pick up that EP over here on their band camp page, if you like what you’re hearing.

Get Folksy With It: Eight Belles

12360058_972750432819383_7431016118482916616_nEight Belles are an indie-folk duo who hail from Oakland and put a little americana spin on their folk tunes. The song I’ve got from them below shows the blending of these genres in the true style of the band; the tempo is slowed and gives way to the impressive vocal performance of Jessi Phillips and the gentle blending of instruments shows the great balance of the group. Subtle violin and piano duel in the background, but if you listen, you’ll hear the real build as the track progresses to its end. “Darkness in Me” is taken from their sophomore album that just came out on Saint Rose Records. You can go stream the rest of the album here.

Got The Holiday Blues? So Does This Tune From Indian Lakes

11882348_996099560442676_8698950030090248899_oFrom Indian Lakes is the project of Joey Vannucchi out of Yosemite California, making transcendent folk music, centered around his airy vocals. He’s shared with us this new seasonal inspired track, called “Bad Holiday,” which is a stunningly beautiful take on holiday music, and a nice treat away from the endless cycle of those same Christmas songs that you seem to hear over and over. While it is a little morose, it’s still a beautifully crafted song; the guitar and instrumentation are all very subtle and minimalist, while the vocals command center stage. Take a listen.

Enjoy This New Weekender Tune

1443555926601Man things have been crazy busy in the real world over here and I have really been failing to bring any sweet jams of my own over the last couple of weeks.  As I begin to settle into some time off, I’ll be looking to share as many tunes as I can find starting now!  This one is from Philly based group Weekender who we’ve shared with you guys prior to this post.  Their new tune is “Floaty Feeling, Blue” which can be accurately described by the title of the song itself.  It’s for fans of Tame Impala who might want a more breezy and bright element thrown in.

Weekender will release their new EP Floaty Feeling, Blue on January 15th via PaperCup Music.

Kicking It with Justus Profit

justiceThere’s a few seconds worth of noise before this new single from Justus Profit really kicks into gear. But, once it launches in, you’ll definitely get hooked. I really love how the vocals aren’t pushed, in either direction, so the voice sounds completely steady with nary a tone stretched too far or too thin. The rest of the track is filled in with different elements of distortion and layering sampled sounds, smoothing out the tune in soft pop sensibility. It’s our first listen to the songs off his upcoming Magic EP, which is slated for a release next week!

Hazy Psych From Levitation Room

12240383_781517001959479_5592848956067417195_oWhen trolling for songs in internet land, one must always check with the labels they know are always killing it, so naturally, Burger Records is responsible for North LA’s Levitation Room. This track, “Crystal Ball,” is pretty much your textbook psych rock, but that doesn’t mean it’s plain or not worth a listen. It’s got a solidly catch choral hook as well as 70s-esque vocals, plus an overall mystical vibes surrounding the song. Their debut full length album, ETHOS, is due out in February, so keep your ears to the ground for more from the band.

ATX Spoglight: Hola Beach Has New Tunes

holabHola Beach has a brand new tape coming out on January 3rd, and now we’ve got a second single to go with the release date. This track from the Austin act takes on the subject of brains versus booze, and which choice is best…lyrics seem to lean towards brains first. Still, the band have a casual way of providing detailed pop tracks, which you’ll inevitably play over and over again. Their new Dirt Cassette is coming out on a limited run of 50 yellow tapes via Merdurhaus, so if you’re so inclined, you’re encouraged to grab it.

Fresh Tunes from New Berlin

newberlinYou gotta keep an eye on the local labels in this town…especially the ones that have been doing it for a good long time, such as Super Secret Records. The label’s getting ready to release a special flexi-disc 7″ from McCallen’s New Berlin, which is slated for a release on January 10th (Release gig at End of an Ear). Immediately upon pressing play you can hear the danger coming…pounding drums, distorted guitar chords and a gloriously shrouded vocal. And just like that, the song’s done. But, don’t fret, the group also have covered Warsaw (you know, Joy Division) for the B-Side. Check it below.
