Brand New EP from Woolen Men

woolenIf you skipped over our year end list (which you shouldn’t have), then you might have missed out on the fact that one of my favorite listens was Woolen Men‘s Temporary Monument. Surprisingly, the band are already back with their brand new Options EP. The EP’s title track has the infectious post-punk meets art rock feel, showing that the group aren’t anywhere to slowing things down. Still, some of the tracks have a slower pacing, illustrating that it’ll be hard to pigeonhole the group’s sound going forward. But, one thing’s for sure, they’re always a great listen. They released this EP on a limited run of cassettes, so you can grab that HERE

Have You Heard The New Damien Jurado Track?

131016-damien-juradoSecretly Canadian can always be counted on to have some of the best artists on their label, and so it’s no surprise that Damien Jurado finds his home there. Making ethereal, acoustic guitar driven tracks out of Seattle, Jurado has accumulated a long line of albums over the years, but it seems like with his upcoming release, Visions Of Us On The Land, he’s adding a bit of a power punch to his tunes. This new track, “Exit 353,” brings fuzzy guitars and a rock and roll finish that will have you screaming along with Damien as he rounds the song out with the repeated, emotional line, “I was alone there.” It’s a great track, and one that you’ll find yourself revisiting again and again–listen for yourself.

Fresh Track From The Besnard Lakes

besnardWhat is there really to say about The Besnard Lakes, other than that they’ve been around for a little over a decade, making progressive pop music that has become a silent staple in the indie rock world? Well, the band is back with this new single, “The Plain Moon,” which has got a definite New Pornos-vibe going on; there’s a great deal of layering and texture to the song. The guitars are a bit bluesy and growl in the bottom of the mix, while the translucent vocals showcase build on each other, all parts equally distorted. The band’s got a new album due out on January 16th via Jagjaguwar, which is called A Colisuem Complex Museum. You can go preorder it here.

Fiery Shoegaze From Sennen

sennenSometimes you find some gems when you’re wading through the internet, looking for sweet tracks. Today’s find was from London’s Sennen, who add a little blister to their shoe gazing indie rock. This track, “Autopilot,” shows their ability to slow-burn, as the song starts off pretty mellow and builds its way up to a full blown crescendo. Their new album, First Light, comes out February 26th of next year on Indelabel. Take a listen below and don’t forget to turn it up loud.

ATX Spotlight: New Album from Party Plants

partyJust because you thought the year was over, doesn’t mean Austin can’t still kick out some brand new jams. Just yesterday the kids over at Party Plants launched their new album, Casual Sects…now available for NYOP. It’s filled to the brim with energetic bursts of punk rock that are tied into the sensibility of pop music. Each song has the ability to move in and out of different spaces, yet they all remain wholly catchy; it’s an undeniably great listen that holds your attention through all 9 songs. Since it’s up on bandcamp, I wanted to give you the opportunity to listen to it all, then you can decide why you should go spend some money on the record…gotta keep bands like this alive folks!

New Doug Tuttle Track

dougSuch a wonderful treat to get a new Doug Tuttle track before we take a little bit of a holiday break. I loved his first solo release since the end of MMOSS, and he picks up right where he left off, if not going further into the realm of sunny guitar pop. It’s the sort of track that takes on a casual tone when it first meets your ears, but the fuzzy guitar noodling and his airy voice carry you the rest of the way. Seems like we’re in for a treat when his new effort, It Calls On Me, hits on February 19th via Trouble In Mind…an always trustworthy choice.

Enjoying This Rory McVicar Tune

roryRory McVicar has been writing music out of the UK for some time, but I’m not going to lie about the fact that I only recently discovered his tunes by way of a few brand new songs that have been making the rounds. I’m particularly fond of the B-Side on his new limited 7″; it’s living in a realm somewhere between singer-songwriter and dreamy indiepop. This track’s light and playful, though the lyrical content tends to be far more affecting. I’ve found it hard to turn away from this tune all day, though the A-Side isn’t anything to shake your head at either. Look for the 7″ on January 19th via Static Caravan.

New Music from Hollow Fortyfives

holowI know we’re all looking down the barrel of winter, possibly the worst one in years (if you believe in Ninos and climate change), so I feel like this Hollow Fortyfives track is a pretty solid track to keep you warm. It’s got that Cali shimmer of garage cum power pop that you know I adore you, offering you just a hint of warmth. You’ll even hear a bit of spoken words beneath the mix in the vein of a lot of old school surf/punk records, so it gets my stamp of approval. This is the title track off their Summertime Psychosis EP, available now.

Back In Time with Love In Mind

love-in-mind-coverSo the story goes that Love In Mind blossomed, bloomed and died…though not under tragic circumstances, just under the reality of living life. Still, the Seattle act left a lasting imprint, and one that’s reverberated through the various members new projects (Dozer, Sick Sad World). But, they’ve graciously completed the recordings of their tracks and are now making them available through a limited cassette run on Lost Sound Tapes. The single definitely has a very Pacific Northwest feel to it, at least in so far as the first half of the track goes before ringing guitar stabs and bobbing drums take you tightly to the finish. You like what you hear? Grab a cassette before they vanish, just like the band.

Steady Dose of Pop from Steven James Adams

sjaThe older I get the more I just want to delve into great pop songwriting; I don’t need the frills, just great tunes. I’m pretty sure that this new single from Steven James Adams will fall in line with that attitude. Opening as a piano ballad, allowing Adams’ voice to shine brightly before the song bounces off into a spritely bit of pop music. Drums steady the melodies, and while the sound is filled with extra instrumentation, no instrument overdoes it…everyone plays their part perfectly. It’s our first glimpse at what’s to come with Old Magick, his second album coming via Fortuna Pop in early 2016.
