Some Psych Pop From Keeps

unnamed (9)Here’s a nice bit of psych pop I found today coming your way from Nashville based outfit Keeps. The song I have for you, entitled “Translucent Girl”, could be likened to a mixture of Surfer Blood and Tame Impala with a bit of 60’s style pop thrown in there somewhere. Though it might be winter, this song will fit right in with it’s spring time album release date.

Brief Spirit will hit streets on March 4th via Old Flame Records.

Warped Pop from Soft Fangs

softI’ve always loved singer-songwriter tunes, but I hold a special place in my heart for the sort that seems to take on the oddity of the world, distorting the genre into something much different. Names like Coma Cinema and Liam Betson come to mind most recently, and now I’m ready to add Soft Fangs to that list. Of course, the warped aspect is reserved for the opening choruswhile a pop explosion fills outthe space that follows, closing the track towards the end. His new album The Light will be out on March 18th via Disposable America and Exploding in Sound Records.

Violent Human System Signs w/ Suicide Squueze

vhsSuicide Squeeze is one of my favorite labels, always releasing tunes that hit home. They’ve just announced that they’ll be working with Violent Human System for their debut album, though they’ll offer up a 7″ teaser that includes this song. It’s definitely a post-punk approach, almost in line with some of the work done by Hot Snakes, though the vocals seem to take on more of that post hardcore emo tone as the guitars knife their way through. The 7″ comes out next week, with the full length to follow later on in the year. West Coasters can catch them touring all through February.

Gritty Indiepop from Romantic States

romanticIn the small world of indiepop, this new single from Romantic States has been making the rounds the last few days, picking up steam and winning us all over. One of the ways the group turns the genre a little on its side is by offering up more distortion in the guitars, giving it the grit mentioned in the title. Sure, the softness from indiepop fans is there, and should be appreciated, but it’s nice to hear it turned up a bit louder than you normally get. This track will appear on the band’s new 7″, which is being released shortly by Nebraskan Coast.

Lionlimb Release New Single

lionFor some reason, I can’t help but think of Eliott Smith when listening to this new track from Lionlimb. Sure, a lot of it comes directly from the vocal inflections, but I can also hear it in the way the songs are constructed. It all harkens back to a purer era in pop songwriting, which you know always has my ears perked up. The band release their debut Shoo on March 4th via Bayonet, and with all the promise of this early single it should definitely be something we’ll all be noticing in the very near future.

Let’s Have Another Holy Esque Tune

7332eebf-c385-4bad-a227-4d0c27b6b76eAs many of you know, I’m awaiting the day all of you folks out there can hear this new Holy Esque album coming out in February. I was close to nominating it for our album’s of the year list but then had to remind myself that it’s not yet available to the public. So right now I’m saying the album will certainly be on my year end list for 2016. If you can find it, get it. Prior to the release, the band is offering up one more single as a preview. Find “Tear” below for your enjoyment.

At Hope’s Ravinewill be out on February 26th via Rough Trade Records.

Loving This Lust for Youth

Lust For YouthBrian and I spent a few weeks after last year’s SXSW raving about the performances from Lust for Youth that we were fortunate enough to catch. On their latest single you can hear some of the gradual shifts that were made even then, providing a much more melodic approach to their crafstmanship…as opposed to their earlier, more angular, writing. They’ll be releasing their newest album, Compassion, this Spring, right during the midst of SXSW. I expect a dense array of darkened electro-pop tunes to come bursting through my speakers, and I won’t complain one bit about that. It’s being handled by Sacred Bones Records.

New from No Zu

capture-nozu-096midI’m really excited by No Zu. In a world where people often get thrown into genres or defined by their past efforts, this group of Australians remain undefined. Think of yourself combining elements of funk, jazz, punk and other dance (hall) elements, combining them all to form an entirely new sound that you’re not likely to hear anywhere else. Seems like the gradual progression of where Chk Chk Chk and LCD Soundsystem crashed into the sound the Clash left behind at the end of their career. It’s rad, and this track will be featured on their new album, Afterlife, which is released by Chapter Music on February 5th.

Another Good One From Quilt

unnamed-12As you may know, Quilt are on their way to releasing their upcoming album, Plaza, on February 26th viaMexican Summer. In promoting said album, they’ve released yet another single for us to salivate over, this time in the form of “Roller.” This track is sleek and refined; the guitars take the form of tight knit riffs accompanied by the occasional twang of synth. Of course, the lush vocals of Anna Rochinski bathe the whole psych pop song in a bit of sunshine. While the lyrics may be somewhat scathing, you can’t help but smile and take in the warmth of those vocals, especially when they’re combined with the backing “ohs” of the rest of the band. Take a listen and get stoked forPlaza.

Woods Are Back Already

woodPerhaps it’s a bit early to look at Levitation Fest, with that other big festival right around the corner, but one thing is for sure, Woods will be high on my list of bands to see. They always seem to be at work on something, and this time around they’re turning their psychedelic Cali pop into something a tad bit different. There’s horns and jamming moments, which have been present here and there in the past, but this time around they’ve stripped away some of the pop sensibility in favor of just experimental psych jams. City Sun Eater in the River of Light is their new effort, and it will be interesting to see how this all comes to head on what you can assume will be a cohesive collection of beautiful tracks; it comes out at the beginning of April.
