Premiere: Sparrows Gate Warm Your Ears

sparrowsgateThis new Sparrows Gatetrack opens with little more than a vocal and a piano background, but within moments the song takes on deeper arrangements, offering soft percussive touches and an atmospheric bit of strings/guitars to fill in all the empty spaces. Songs such as these sink deep into your soul, pulling out the emotive notes as you gaze into the nearest fire, trying to stay warm in these winter times. As the song moves all the way forward, there’s this haunting little string piece that always sticks out to me; it’s a forlorn touch that seems to step in line with the tones of the vocals. Look for the group’s new effort, Ghost Blue, which comes out on January 22nd via Royal Oakie Tapes and Records.

Brand New Track from Free Time

free-timeWhat! New Free Time?! I’m in. This band now calls NYC their home, though they originated in our favorite Aussie town of Melbourne. It’s primarily been the project of Dion who played with Twerps when we booked them for a SXSW show long ago (the line-up currently includes Marty of Twerps!). Honestly, on the band’s last LP, I thought the songs moved just a touch too slowly for my tastes. But, this new song seems absolutely perfect. Guitar sounds are perfect, they bring in some harmonizing vocals and just a casual hint of jangling to go with the hip beat. Sure, it’s early, but this has been one of my favorite tracks of 2016 so far. Their new album, In Search for Free Time, comes out soon via Bedroom Suck/Underwater Peoples.

ATX Spotlight: My Golden Calf

mygoldencalf

My Golden Calf is a four piece from our very own city, which formed, as most bands do, after previous acts dissipated and dissolved. Lead guitarist and vocalist, Dabney Dwelle (Quien es Boom) enlisted the help of three friends to create the group and their sound is something along the lines of indie rock with a hint of alt-country/folk spliced into the mix via the rough and twangy vocals. As youll hear from the single below, Either, the band does a good job of blending the two aforementioned genres seamlessly. The track is one that hinges on the constant motion and simmering patterns of instrumentationespecially the ceaseless presence of some kind of piano/keyboard that makes the sound full and layered. And then theres the raspy vocals of Dwelle, which push the song beyond indie rock and into the folk genre. Dont forget to keep your listening ears perked for the release of their debut full length, Perfume Brute, which is due out at the end of February; should be a good one.

Hear Some New Summer Salt Jams

summer salt 1 (1)I’m really excited to be working with these guys on our ATH Records label. The voice of Matt Terry alone would win it for me, but Phil and Eugene aren’t too shabby either, filling in the corners with their bossa nova rhythms. Plus, having seen several Austin acts this week, I love the fact that these three genuinely seem to love playing together…you can tell they’re having fun, and sometimes, that carries out. Anyways, they just got some UK love for their new single, and I figured I had to put it up over here too, seeing as we’re putting out their Going Native EP. Just another reason why Summer Salt could be the biggest rising star in Austin this year. Grab a copy of the EP HERE (it comes out in two weeks).

Fresh Track From Nap Eyes

unnamed-9The perks of this gig are that we occasionally get to preview albums months before their arrival, and that’s the case for me loving the song below so much. I’ve listened predominantly to two upcoming releases: Pete Astor and Nap Eyes. I really listened to them, playing them hundreds of times, and this Nap Eyes effort is really great. It’s got all the things that made indie rock so dominant in the late 90s/early 00s, offering great lyrical content along with a combination of college rock nostalgia and folk flourishes. Their new effort Thought Rock Fish Scale is nothing short of an enduring album you’ll come back to time and time again; it hits on February 5th via Paradise of Bachelors.

The Dandy Warhols Return!

unnamed-8

The Dandy Warhols have been a staple in the alternative scene for over two decades now, so its not surprising that this first new track in three years is nothing but great. You Are Killing Me has the band sounding a bit mellow, though if you listen close, youll hear the grumble and grit of the guitars as the song builds. To me, it sounds like The Magnetic Fields in its sing-songy nature and the choral hook will surely have you turning back again and again. Who knows what 2016 has in store for this group, but after this new single out on Dine Alone Records, Id keep a look out for more new tunes from these veterans of alternative.

Airy Indie Rock From Dear Boy

Sometimes, all you really need is a bombastic indie track to kick you through the day. Today, that kick comes to you from Dear Boy, out of LA. The song below, Local Flowers is pretty much your textbook indie rock jam, and it immediately grabs you with its streamlined, radio ready, sound. Its also got a touch of shoe gaze in the way the guitars sort of float at the top of the mix, creating an airy sound. Theyve got an EP coming out this spring with a few more tracks for you to relish, but for now, you can jam the track below.

Fresh Music from Black Twig

blackyIt’s a fresh year, so why not start it off with some fresh tunes from Finland and Black Twig. We’ve enjoyed what this band has had to offer before now, but this might be the best work they’ve completed. There’s a casual approach, just filling the song with these sliding alternative guitar chords that cut through your speakers; it sounds like a modern spin on some of the tunes we got from Teenage Fanclub. Vocals sit perfectly in the mix, providing the perfect emotional draw for listeners…never getting in the way of the instruments. Their third album, Blaze on a Plain, will be released by Soliti in April of this year; sounds like it’s going to be a helluva record.

More Quiet-ude from Michael Nau

Erika_12JKT EPS_r4It’s about time you delve into the work of Michael Nau, the man behind Cotton Jones, as he prepares you for his new solo outing. As you’ll see on this track, there’s a very careful entry into the track via gently picked strings. Then Nau jumps in with his voice, offering up a softened vocal that’s quite enchanting. For those that weren’t familiar with him before, songs like this one should prepare you to get lost in the forthcoming listen of Mowing, his album for Suicide Squeeze that hits stores on February 19th.

Hinds – Leave Me Alone

hindsleavemealoneRating: ★★★☆☆

Within the past few months it seems that this group of four girls from Madrid have been all over the news in the indie scene. Hinds(formerly Deers) have released a fair number of singles over the past year, building up the buzz around their lo-fi garage tunes and with good reason; each of these singles has been catchy and fun to sing along to, all while those slightly gritty guitars jangle on infectiously. Leave Me Alone is an impressive debut, filled with lo-fi tunes with a pop twist to them, though not much more than what the singles have been hinting at.

What’s great about this record is that it is unapologetically messy and raucous and never really too much so. Hinds reach a balance of precision carelessness, which you get on the louder, in-your-face tracks like “Castigadas en el granero, or Warts,” or any of the singles that youve probably already heard. The vocals on these track trade off between quick lipped solos and -sometimes together-sometimes not- distorted girl gang shouting. On paper, this doesn’t sound like something that would make a lot of sense, but it works alongside the tight knit guitar riffs. “Chili Town” is a prime example of how well this dynamic can shine and the band uses the variation in vocal style to give the track a tonal variety and climactic chorus associated with your favorite pop tunes.

The album ends with a succession of slower, less rowdy tracks, but the vocal performance doesnt shift: theyre sloppy-chic till the end. Of these ending tracks, “Walking Home” is the standout. With its the surfy guitar riffs and start and stop instrumentation it grabs your attention and holds you through the last notes of the record. The guitars on this song are catchy and light, while the vocals bring the lo-fi aspect to the mix.

And so at the end of Leave Me Alone Hinds have given you exactly what you came for, so you can’t complain too much; there are no bad tracks on the record. My only real qualm with this album is that these ladies dont stray too far from one style of track and one singular sound. Dont get me wrong, it’s a good one, but the lack of variety prevents excellency and lands on mediocre. Nonetheless, Hinds are destined to remain a buzz band through 2016, and I’m interested to see where they will go next for a sophomore record.
