Drifting Psych Pop from Golden Daze

goldenBe it the cover or the song itself, everything about this track screams psychedelic nod. Lucky for Golden Daze the execution is pretty spot on, and has just enough of a hint of pop accessibility to push it into my stream of listening. There’s a steady drift to the track, coming in all directions from the vocals, guitar sound and the song’s overall pacing. Something pleasant breaks through the song in the end, begging you to play it again and again, which is always a positive sign for any listener. Look for the group’s debut self-titled album on February 19th via Autumn Tone.

Marvelous Mark Is Back

marvelousI first discovered Marvelous Mark when I got into Marvelous Darlings awhile back, but I’d mostly forgotten about the songwriter until I saw a friend post about his forthcoming Crushin’ LP on Drunken Sailor Records. The music he crafts lands somewhere between power pop and pop punk; you can expect to hear heavy rifts filled with hook after hook. These are the sorts of songs you turn up loud, memorize and sing at the top of your lungs with all your friends. The album drops this weekend, and it’s my birthday weekend, so feel free to buy it and ship it my way!

Brand New Gun Outfit

gunsHonestly, I didn’t expect this week. It seems like hit after hit has come my way, via my searching or just a massive amount of tunes being pushed out there. Still, it wouldn’t be a great week without this Gun Outfit tune to wrap things up with a little bit of alt-country perfection. Their new album Dream All Over just came out, but they have this great new Two Way Player EP ready for your ears via Wharf Cat. Maybe it’s a stretch, but it seems like this song is the crossroads where Kurt Vile and Silver Jews meet in the middle…it’s the sound of rolling on with just a hint of being an outsider; it’s the sound you’ve been looking for but didn’t know you were looking for, yet. The EP will be out on February 21st.

Brooklyn’s Alpenglow Bring You Bright Folk Pop

unnamed-5This is a track that will have you revisiting and singing along in your head for the rest of the day to come. Alpenglow is a four piece from Brooklyn, creating sunny, spring ready folk pop tunes. They are releasing their debut full length record later this year, and today they’ve shared the first promising single from that record. “Solitude,” begins with this sharp guitar riff that carries the tune, but then the soft, A.C. Newman reminiscent, vocals join in and the track really begins to shine. The choral hook is more than enough to get you exited for more from this band, and their dreamy pop tunes. Look out for Callisto, out February 26th via Chizu Records.

Dark Rock From Bleached

unnamed-15Are you ready for a mix of dark badass rock mixed with a radio ready chorus? Bleached consists ofJennifer and Jessica Clavin, Micayla Grace and Bosh Rothmans, who have gained a bit of a following with their gritty rock tunes. They’ve been working on their second full length album, and have graced us with a music video for single, “Keep On Keepin’ On,” which you should watch below. This is the kind of song you put on when you’re amping up for the day; the guitars roar along with the vocals in tandem and those handclaps in the chorus will have you joining in and turning up the volume.

Their new album, Welcome The Worms, will be out April 1st via Dead Oceans.

Death By Unga Bunga Will Rock Your Thursday

unnamed-13Oh, you don’t know too much about Norwegian Garage Rock? Well, sit on down and then get ready to stand right back up because Death By Unga Bunga have got a ripping track for you with “Young Girls.” This song is a three minute whirlwind of glam rock guitar riffs, carefree vocals, crashing cymbals and general garage rock good times. To me, they’ve got a bit of the same sort of attitude that bands like Twin Peaks bring to the table; that self-assured, modern-day garage punk aesthetic that doesn’t apologize for rocking your face off.

Their first North American release and full length, Pineapple Pizza, will be out March 4th viaJansen Plateproduksjon.

Just Listen to Jealousy

jealousyLike any music fan, I can get stuck in one space, listening to the same genre over and over, or even just one album. But, there’s interesting things happening all the time, so I’m lucky to have come across this tune from Jealousy. It lives on the outskirts of industrial music, but it seems more like it was crafted secretly on some industrial complex…sterile and cold. But, there’s a nice softness to the vocals that really get allow you to lose yourself within the confines of the song. The new album, Paid For It, will be released by Moniker Records on March 4th.

Digging This New Slingshot Dakota

dakotaslingshotSlingshot Dakota is the project of Bethlehem, PA’s Carly Comando and Tom Patterson, who make indie punk rock tunes that will command your attention. The second that this tune, “Paycheck” starts coming out of your speakers, you’ll be immediately drawn to the crunchy waves of synth that never cease, combined with the punching drums that become cymbal-heavy during the catchy chorus. Comando’s vocals add a layer of sweetness to the otherwise snarling tune, but the sweetness doesn’t overpower the track. Take a listen below.

Their new album,Break, will be out March 11th onTopshelf Records. Preorder it here.

Let Ski Lodge “Crush Your Heart”

12241054_910061415745802_7849050622918147658_oWhile there have been some great gems, this may be the best track of the day. Ski Lodge, or the project of Andrew Marr, has long held a place in our hearts, but this new track “Crush Your Heart” is really something and I can’t stop listening. It’s got a little bit of dream and synth pop action going on here, combined with a danceable rhythm that allows room for a bit more than just head bobbing and toe tapping. The synths really pack a punch, while the guitar parts keep you grounded in the tune and the lyrics remind you of the anxieties of dying (as if we really needed a reminder of that this week). I’m telling you, this track has truly got it all. Take a listen and make sure you pick up a tape off the limited run of the upcoming 2/26 EP here.
