Punk Rock Your Thursday With VHS

unnamed-27VHS, or Violent Human System, have joined the impeccable lineup over at Suicide Squeeze Records and with this great news, they’ve shared a single off their upcoming record. This track, “Wheelchair” is a riot of a number– gritty guitars with plenty of distortion are accompanied by the intermittent gang vocals of the whole group joining in to blast you with a lot of hardcore energy. It’s a great punk track, and has got my excited for what awaits us onGift of Life, which will be out June 17th.

SXSW Interviews: Still Parade

stillWhen we start looking at all the bands on the SXSW lineup, it’s sometimes hard to decipher everything and find quality acts. Need not worry though, ATH will help you out in that department as much possible as we lead up to the festival. Bleached Strike Again!

12471348_959204584127145_6166781260372655284_oBleached are really on a roll– the video and track they released a little while back for “Keep On Keepin’ On” caught our attention and has brought us back for repeated listening. Now, they’ve got another single/delightful music video for “Wednesday Night Melody,” which is a Weekend at Bernie’s-classic short story featuring the members of the band. The music video is enough of a treat for you, but then you add in the great track and the band’s hit a sweet spot. The song has got a great laid back beat to it while still packing a punch of that rock and roll in the huge sound of the guitars. Take a listen and watch below and lookout for Welcome The Worms, out via Dead Oceans on April 1st.

Stream Purling Hiss’ New EP

Today’s daily dose of garage greatness comes in the delightful form of ATH favorite’s Purling Hiss. The band’s just released a new EP, Something, which you can stream below and also buy over at their bandcamp for a steal of 4$. Once you press play on the EP, you’ll be greeted by a plethora of fuzz and lo-fi goodness. Of course, there’s also those guitars that pack a bit of jangle, and the presence of tambourine to top it all off. Take a listen.

Another Andy Ferro Tune

andyDon’t think I’m just stuck over here listening to dream pop all day. There’s a special spot in my daily listening reserved for the like of Andy Ferro, offering a blend of folk and classic rock. Ferro’s definitely been on our radar lately, as he’s nearing the release of Muirhead (2.26). This tune’s right up my alley, bringing a bare-bones folk-inspired tune to my ears; I like the fact that it feels so stripped down, providing the intimacy one doesn’t always find in the modern musical landscape. Looking for something personal and quiet? This here is your tune!

Stream the New Velcro Album

velcroIn case you didn’t hear how happy we were to help with the Ocean Party LP last year…we were, we really were. But, the long story is that I came to the band by way of Curtis W, the man behind Velcro, and one of the core members of OP. He just put up his new self-titled LP, and I think it’s a good bit of tunes to help you see where his songwriting comes from/goes. I think I’m currently stuck on the slight jangle of “Bed Ridden 2.” But, for you newcomers, or fans of Aussie pop, you can currently grab the album for NYOP…though we always encourage dollars going to the bands. Sweet streams.

Jennifer O’ Connor’s New Album is Near

joI’ve always had a soft spot for Jennifer O’ Connor since her early days on Matador. Her later work has been quite remarkable, and I implore you to give this new single a listen. While there’s a lot going on musically, be it the softened beat or the churning guitars, O’ Connor almost seems naked in front of us. Her vocal performance is one of the stronger ones I’ve heard this year, but it’s presence in the mix almost makes everything else fade away. Her new album, Surface Noise, comes out on March 4th via Kiam Records, and this track is one of its many offerings that should illustrate why you should be paying attention to her work.

Dream Pop Hit from Plastic Flowers

plasticI have a feeling this song is going to be in heavy rotation throughout the rest of this week. It hits almost immediately with the drum work, then the coated vocals come in to drive home that emotional pull that makes pop fans swoon. There’s something about the immediacy of this song that makes it so endearing; I found it hard to turn off from the moment I pressed play, and I have a feeling that if you’re into this sound, you’ll feel the same. Heavenly, the new Plastic Flowers album, will be out April 22nd…and this is our first (great) taste.

Another Killer Track From Slingshot Dakota

slingshotdakotaIt wasn’t too long ago that I shared with you this track from Pennsylvania’s Slingshot Dakota, but the duo is back with another great number to satisfy all your pop-punk needs. “Lewlyweds” is filled with the same kind of spunk that delighted you on “Paycheck” in a nicely packed two minute burst of energy. There’s alsoa good presence of synth on hereas well, adding some lightness to balance out the shredding guitars. Break, the album that this track is taken from, will be out March 11th via Topshelf Records.

ATX Spotlight: Fresh Nameless Frames

namelessI’m really digging the few short listens I’ve had to the forthcoming LP from Austin’s Nameless Frames; it’s a good blend of punk fueled by energetic tunes and anthemic vocals. The single below has this grit to it that initially covers up some of the pop sensibility lurking beneath, but as the track evolves, that element rises to the top, asking you to tap your toes as you play the song over and over again. The band is releasing their self-titled album this week via Super Secret Records, with a release celebration at End of an Ear on Sunday (2.20) at 6 PM. Enjoy.
