ATH Abroad: Primavera Sound 2016 Preview

Screen Shot 2016-05-25 at 10.10.50 AMIn one week I’ll be touching down in Barcelona, Spain with around 200,000 of my closest friends in order to attend Primavera Sound. While you may not be in attendance, as this festival is quite a long jaunt away from the ATX, there are quite a few bands on the excellent and exciting lineup that will be making their way to our own city limits in the near future. As this is essentially the first super fest of the summer season, I’m on my way to Parc del Forum to scoop out who you must see when they come to a city near you, and who you should expect to step into the limelight of the indie world in the near future. Sure, I’m super stoked to see Radiohead, LCD Soundsystem, Beach House, Wild Nothing, Sigur Ros, Destroyer, Beirut, Dinosaur JR. … the list goes on. But what about those acts that get overlooked by these huge names? Read on for my top 5 international semi-under the radar acts that I’m most excited to see.

The Teen Age Pay Homage in New Video

unnamed (11)Brooklyn based band The Teen Age has always been a sort of throwback style band offering up hits similar to The Strokes or The Ramones. Embracing their sound and image, the boys have released this new video for one of their most recent singles “Backwards”. The video is essentially a shot for shot remake of a scene from the classic 1979 film Rock n Roll High School starring The Ramones. A killer song now has a video to go with it. Don’t forget to pick up The Teen Age’s latest EP Bad Seed now on Papercup Music.

Deeper Sign to Fire Talk

Processed with VSCO with f2 presetMan if every label in the world discovered as much good music as Brooklyn outfit Fire Talk, the world would be a better place right? Well they have found yet another quality act in the form of Chicago based indie pop band Deeper. Now these guys create this sort of interesting take on dream pop but with a bit of an edge to it. As you probably know by now, describing music isn’t my strong suit and I prefer you to just trust me and hit play.

Deeper are currently working on a full release coming in 2017. Stay tuned.

Why Not Share This Broncho Track?

unnamed-43Oh man, this track is a real winner. If you’re into garage rock with enough fuzz on it to rattle your headphones then this new track from BRONCHO who hail from Norman, Oklahoma. “I Know You” is a spiraling rock track, with twangy guitars and hazy vocals, but at the same time, it’s got a compelling vibe to those gang vocals that will have you coming back for more. From the beginning, this song is huge and it doesn’t ever get less than giant in its sound. Take a listen and get excited for theirupcoming record,Double Vanity, will be out June 10th via Dine Alone Records.

Word on the street is that they’re playing at The Sidewinder in a few short days (5/28) and you should probably scoop up a ticket for that right here.

Raw Track From American Monoxide

unnamed (9)When you hear a band name like American Monoxide, you’d expect the music to have a little bit of edge and rawness to it right? Well that’s exactly what you’re going to get when you check out this new song called “Get Into My Way”. It’s as if Modest Mouse decided to make some country/folk music during their Lonesome Crowded West years. Hopefully that makes some kind of sense to you people. And here’s to hoping for Mr. Dimitri Manos to keep making more quality music just like this.

New album Web Content will drop on June 10th.

Incredible New No Joy Track

untitledWhen you hear about new music from Montreal based No Joy, you know it’s going to be a good day. We’ve seriously been major fans for years so new music is always incredibly exciting. Don’t expect to be let down in anyway either with this rocking and badass new song “Thorn in Garlands Side”. The intro alone should be enough to have you hooked. This band can do no wrong.

New EP Drool Sucker will be out on July 15th via Topshelf Records.

Single Premiere: Tincho

TINCHO PROMO PICMan I love it when we’re asked to do a track premiere for some music I’ve really been digging lately. Today I am given that pleasure from Seattle based mostly solo project known as Tincho. Our track is called “Underwater Eyes” and is self-described as slop with touches of atmospheric pop. While that description does seem pretty fitting, I’d add this one is for fans of guys like Mac Demarco, Kelly Stoltz or even Kurt Vile. Needless to say, I’m pretty high on this guy right now.

“Underwater Eyes” appears on a brand new EP entitled Nos Vemos due out Friday June 3rd (pre-order here).

Told Slant Strikes Again!

11215880_611309239011111_7984172434889771659_nTold Slant, as I posted about a few weeks ago, is really on the up-and-coming as they prep for the release of their album,Going By.This Brooklyn group, which is fronted by Felix Walworth. This track, “High Dirge,” is a melancholy song, focusing around the twangy and emotion packed vocals of Walworth. It’s a quiet number that uses its slow-core aesthetic to rope you in, and then the lyrics keep you there. Lines like “It’s a long life, I can’t get it right,” that are repeated over and over, stick with you long after the song is over. Take a listen and find out.

Going By, will be available June 17th via Double Double Whammy Records, and you can preorder it here.

More Mourn Music

mournLooks like the Mourn press cycle is in full swing, with another single coming a week after the last one just popped up. This time around, the young Spaniards seem a little bit more rambunctious, which definitely has my ears perked back. There’s a bit of seeming animosity built into the band’s self-described “poem of hope,” loosely influenced by William Blake. Their newest album, Ha Ha He, is just around the corner, with June 3rd set as the release date via Captured Tracks.

Stream Most Intellectual by Plantation Band

PhotosPlantation Band are working with the good folks of ATH Records (that’s us!) to release their debut album, Most Intellectual. It’s our first foray into country music, but I assure you that labeling the band as such diminishes their abilities. Most Intellectual is the calm before the storm, as those who’ve witnessed the band’s live shows can attest, they’re growing in power, destined for great things. Their debut comes out this Friday, with a release show scheduled in Austin at Cheer Up Charlies on June 1st with their friends A. Sinclair. Stream the album below, fall in love with it and commit your future to the band…be glad you did.
