More from Oh Well, Goodbye

ohwellNot too many weeks ago I was raving about “Clandestine,” one of the newer tracks we had heard from Liverpool’s Oh Well, Goodbye, but now we’ve got a brand new one for your ears. This one takes on the darker tones of danceable pop music, moved by the throbbing bass and shimmering guitars that cut through the indifferent delivery of the vocals. If you’re going to stare at your shoes, then perhaps you’d want to do it to a track like this, maybe even tap your feet a little…not too much, you don’t want to draw attention to yourself. This song features on the band’s forthcoming Swoon EP on Bleeding Gold Records in November. It’s the first of a few releases the band has planned for your end of the year listening.

Did You Catch This New Protomartyr Track??

0002686207_10I’m a pretty big fan of anything that Detroit’s Protomartyr puts out, so naturally I feel inclined to share with you a song they recorded for Adult Swim’s Summer Single collection. Apparently, this song was recorded in a two day span back in March, but when you take a listen to it, it oozes nothing but meticulous and refined garage rock. The track is slow but steady beast that thumps along, the guitars swelling with grit and cutting like knives through the mix. Make sure you take a listen below and check out when the band will be coming to your city next right here… *Spoilers* they’re even coming to our very own Sound on Sound Fest in November. Make sure you’re there.

Fun Pop from The Pooches

poochesThis new release from The Pooches is shaping up to be quite exciting, seemingly filled with fun pop tunes that seem destined to be played on repeat around my house. There’s a familiarity to the sound, be it the precision drum work, guitar solo or just the chilled vocal delivery. Something about this track just screams carefree good times, and seeing as it’s the last few weeks of summer, perhaps we could all use a little bit of that in our lives (I know I sure could). Looking forward to their self-titled album on Lame O Records, which is being released on September 9th.

Even More Ex Cult

excultAlready this week we streamed the new 7″ from Ex Cult, but we have better news for you today: the band have announced their new album, Negative Growth. It seems that the band’s concept of creating an album about “fear and deception” have taken hold in the recording of this new effort; there’s a darkness that pervades this tune, which still holds true to the energetic force the band has always pushed forward. Even the vocals on this track have a different feel, as if they’re being recorded in a bubble or under water; it definitely brings forth the spirit of fear. In the Red Records will be releasing the album later this year, so get ready.

The band has a slew of West Coast/Midwest tour dates in October, including a October 3rd show at Barracuda here in Austin (+3 other Tx shows).

New Jam from Earth Girls

earthgirlsWhen Earth Girls first came into my ears via the Typical Girls compilation (Emotional Response) I was really excited with their sound, and that’s not slowing now that the band has unleashed this new single from their new album. This number blasts off rather quickly with a furious pace from both drums and guitar. I like the playful tone of Liz Panella’s voice; she sounds like she’s having fun while blasting through this song. Wanderlust will be released next Friday, August 12th, via Grave Mistake Records. Enjoy another scorcher.

Bouncing Electro Pop From Psychic Twin

13330930_1262696833741276_6721235017040534068_nPsychic Twin, aka the project of Erin Fein, is starting to make waves with her psychedelic electro pop. Today she put out a new video for the track, “Lose Myself,” which is taken from her upcoming album,Strange Diary. The song is a pulsating and sleek example of electronica, but Fein’s vocals counterbalance these cold sounds with her welcoming vocal presence. The result is a dance-able groove, with a catchy chorus to get you singing along. Watch the video below and get ready for the release ofStrange Diary, which will be out September 9th via Polyvinyl.

Here’s Another Cool Ghouls Tune

coolzWe’re just a few weeks away from the release of Animal Races, the latest LP from Cool Ghouls, and they’re finally sharing what I think is one of the record’s standout tunes. The upbeat vibe was apparent back on their self-titled release in 2013, but I think they’ve fleshed it out and improved the production a bit. Don’t get lost on the opening half’s lyrical vibe, as the majority of the track is just this great psychedelic jam, circling back in the latter half to close the song out with another vocal flourish. Weirdly, I also hear a nod to Television in there. Empty Cellar will release the album on August 19th, so be ready to grab a copy.

Stunning New Sat. Nite Duets Tune

satniteduetsIt takes a lot to come out with a track that doesn’t fit in anywhere, yet appeals to everyone; I got that vibe when I played this Sat. Nite Duets tune for the first time. For the most part, the track takes on a somber bone, accented by the quivering vocal performance. But, there are beautiful voices out there, so in order to build upon that, the band have included bits of sax and strings to surround the voice as it enters your ears. Their album Air Guitar will be released by Father Daughter Records on September 16th, giving us all something more than your average fare to enjoy.

More New Music from Gorgeous Bully

gorgeousbullyThis new track from Gorgeous Bully comes with an explanation from Art Is Hard Records; it’s a new song that doesn’t have a home quite yet, but merely meant to hold fans, like myself, over while the silly record plants work out getting the label the new GB/Something Anorak Split 7″ finished. The tune itself is actually pretty simple, but it illustrates why the songwriting of GB has gotten to me these last few years; it reminds me of the simplistic approach that Wavves used, just happier, making you feel good about your spot in life. Rebecca of Whorish Boorish also does some nice backing vocals on the track. Some very limited copies of the 7″ are available HERE.

Bright Pop from The Chairman Dances

thechairmandancesSomething familiar lurks in the sounds/songwriting of The Chairman Dances. Part of me hears bits of Allo Darlin or Austin’s Hollywood Gossip, but I also can hear a touch of Mountain Goats, though spun in a more pop direction. It’s an approach I’m definitely enjoying, bordering the line’s between folk tradition and indiepop joy, and I always appreciate such exuberance. They have a new album titled Time Without Measure coming out on August 26th via Black Rd Records, so give this tune a listen.
