Show Preview: Austin Jukebox #4 – Saturday @ Beerland

jukeboxAs of right now, there’s a very very top secret guest headlining this event at Beerland Saturday night. We’ve been told it’ll either have all of Austin running to the venue…or you’ll just say “I don’t know who that is.” But…guests aside…the line-up of openers is remarkable enough to get you out on Saturday night. Jerry DeCicca(of the Black Swans) will set the mood for you early on, opening the night shortly after doors at 9 PM. Then you’ve got the powerhouse noisemakers from Burnt Skull, who always remind me that I need to go back and revisit Sewer Birth, their album from 12XU. Then of course, you get one of Austin’s most underrated, Knife in the Water…who have great news themselves…with an album on the way, and a reissue on vinyl too. All in all, even if you don’t know the headliner…don’t you wanna end up at Beerland? Stay tuned on twitter and Facebook for news of this very special guest!

Tickets for the show will be a measly $5 at the door!

Infectious Dream Pop From Suburban Living

unnamed-54Suburban Living, out of Philadelphia, have signed to 6131 Records for the release of their second album. They’re making dream pop with major electronic influences, as you’ll hear in the song below called “Come True,” which begins with those bouncing synths. As the track progresses and builds, you get shimmery guitars as well as hazy vocals to complete the dream pop vibes that Suburban Living do very well. Look out forAlmost Paradise, which will be out October 7th via 6131 Records.

Fresh Power Pop Punk from Sonic Avenues

sonicavesAnother day, another hit from Dirtnap Records. Really, the story should be that Sonic Avenues continue to impress me with their walk between power pop and pop punk, similar to the work of label mates Mind Spiders. That being said, there’s always a shinier side in their tracks, but the breakdown in the middle of this tune feels more sinister, so perhaps their new effort, Disconnector, will have the band expanding on their near-perfect sound. Turn it up loud, listen to the anthemic chorus, and get yourself to the record store on October 7th.

Bluesy Folk Rock From Julia Jacklin

unnamed-53Australia tends to give us some pretty great gifts music-wise, and Julia Jacklin, originally from the Blue Mountains, is no exception to this. The track below, “Coming of Age,” shows off the skills that Jacklin has. The sound is pretty big from the beginning; the guitars are hazy and garage-tinged, but the vocals are quite the folk-rooted croon. It’s a right catchy and delightful number that hybrids two different genres quite flawlessly. Jacklin is new to the music scene, which makes this track all the more impressive. Make sure to look out for more from Jacklin, and get ready forDon’t Let The Kids Win, which will be out October 7th via Polyvinyl Records.

Noisy Pop Punk from Dowsing

dowsingNot going to lie, but this song totally rules from Dowsing. It’s filled with a youthful vibrancy that’s not too serious, and enough hooked employed to keep you interested. It reminds me a lot of super early Say Anything, building swelling guitar hooks and matching them with heart-on-your-sleeve lyrics. It’s a fun number to just turn up loud, allowing you to sample the band’s sound as they prepare to head out of their hometown in Chicago with their friends Ratboys. Not only will the two bands tour together, but they’ll be releasing a split EP via Topshelf Records on September 9th.

Always a Spot for Kool Keith

koolkeithI remember way back in the day, when my adoration for hip-hop had waned, there was Kool Keith…in particular, Dr. Octagon. Fast forward to today, and I’m pretty indifferent to most hip-hop, but something about KK has always fascinated me. Perhaps most of it revolves around the oddity that he takes on in his rap persona. He even proclaims the purpose of his new album, Feature Magnetic, is to reignite the weird…none of that boring, over-produced Kanye stuff. If you like your hip-hop weird, then have a listen to this new tune he just upped…with the LP to drop on September 16th.

Cheap Girls to Release B-Sides and Rarities

cheapgirlsFor me, I always think of Cheap Girls as the pop fans’ Guided By Voices. They’re similar in their power-pop guitar work, and Midwest roots, but by and large, I’ve always found Cheap Girls to be slightly more accessible. Their songs are longer, for the most part, and they work around more traditional structures. I know, you’re thinking, “I love Bob Pollard and his short pieces,” and I do too, but sometimes, you just want to sink your teeth into an entire song…or album. So, the group have opted to release God’s Ex Wife, a collection of B-sides and rarities, including the never before heard track below; it’ll be released by Asian Man Records on September 16th.

Fresh Track from Racing Heart (ft. Jenny Hval)

racingheartHaving Jenny Hval involved in this tune should be enough to garner your attention…or at least a preliminary listen. But, you’ll find that you keep coming back to the track for it’s lyrical lifting from CIA covert ops manuals…and then just the song itself. Hval is a perfect counterbalance to the voice of Mathias Tjonn, or Racing Heart; she’s got an angelic pitch working against his deepened warmth. As the song unfolds, production picks up just enough to build the emotional aspects within the confines. This song will fit into his new LP, What Comes After, which is being released by Misra Records on September 16th.

Classic Aussie Pop from The Cannanes Gets ReIssued!

cannanesEveryone that adores indiepop, or Aussie tunes, should now stand up and clap for Chapter Music. The Australian label are reissuing A Love Affair with Nature from the Cannanes; they aren’t settling there, as the new reissue is a picture disc, new liner notes, and a collection of bonus tracks from the early singles. Listening now, you’ll probably realize that the band’s mark is omni-present in much of the indiepop of today, which just goes to show how timeless the songs from that album truly are. Probably your first chance to get your hands on the LP version since the 90s, unless you’re getting luck with Discogs or Ebay, so grab your copy on September 16th.

One More BOYO Hit

BOYOWe’re just a week away from the release of BOYO‘s first album, Control, so we’ve got to maximize exposure for the young songwriter. This tune has a solemn feel to it, created by the way the vocals were recorded distantly in the mix. In doing so, the emphatic touches of the song itself burst forth rather infrequently, almost like a mini burst of pop dosage; it reminds me a lot of Built to Spill on Nothing Wrong with Love. I find it catchy, yet dreamy at the same time, which is why I’ll be getting my hands on the record when it’s released next Friday via Danger Collective.
