“Maybe you know that its been too long.” Yes we do, Angel. It’s good to have you back.

At this point in her discography, I assumed that I knew what to expect from a new Angel Olsen album – confessional folk music that explores the uncomfortable dichotomy of relationships while occasionally picking up an electric guitar. In fact, I had the intention of analyzing the albums meaning and lyrical intentions when I initially dived into it, but I was constantly sidetracked by the range of emotions this album reverberates through its variety, production, and songwriting. Angel Olsen of the past, as a songwriter, seemed to deliver her message carefully and quietly. Now she’s writing unique pop and rock songs with confidence and conviction in her delivery; whether it’s a background vocal laden in effects, a climactic guitar solo, or a keyboard subtly peeking in, Angel relies more on the instruments around her and her tools in the studio than her voice to manipulate her listeners emotions. New Video/Single from Love Sport

Love Sport have graced our pages a few times before, and they’re back again today with a brand new video for you from their forthcoming record, Dull Tracks. The video is a shot in a home-video format, telling the story of a cursed guitar that just won’t quit until it’s burned into ashes. For the song, you’ll find the band bending chords, throwing down semi-psychedelic guitar licks and working with some distinctive vocal tones. I can see people making comparisons to Mac D or that horrifically named genre, slacker-pop. Regardless, I’m digging it. Look for the LP from Soliti later on this year!

It’s Terry Malts Time

terrymaltPerhaps one of my favorite acts, Terry Malts, are back for the attack…making it my favorite time of the year. Hearing their new single, not only has me looking forward to the full-length, but also reflecting upon their past. Now, I can’t vouch for the entirety of the LP, having not heard it, but, my first run through sees the band pulling from their storied history (which I also adore). They’re often quick, energetic and infectious…and my ears hear them looking further into the spectrum of pop. In all honesty, I expect them to mix it all up, leaving listeners with a record they’ll play time and time again…just like their other LPs. Look for Lost at the Party on October 14th via Slumberland Records.

STRFKR Has A Lovely New Jam

ShensSTRFKR is the socially acceptable version of Starfucker. They are playing Sound on Sound Fest. I will watch their set with glee and shimmy. Given the level of shenanigans at previous shows that included astronauts, horse heads, Gumby, LED walls and more, they are high on my fest list.

They have a new record called Being No One, Going Nowhere on Polyvinyl that is due for release the weekend of the fest, so take you twenty and get some fest-flavored vinyl. From that, we have a lovely groove called “Tape Machine”.

Spin This New Sighs Track

sighsFeel like indie rock has gotten stale as of late, so it’s great to see that there are some things I find wholly entertaining in the larger scale of music fandom. The opening moments from this Sighs track sound like soft pop, and those moments alone piqued my interest. But, the song was elevated with stabs of horns and synth washes to give it a little push above the ordinary fare. It’s nice to find something that’s still somewhat left of the dial, no matter how much it might wear the influences of contemporaries. Look for the new Friends EP on September 13th.

Brand New Indiepop from Pale Spectres

palespectresFrench act Pale Spectres have been high upon my indiepop radar for quite some time, first appearing on my radar via Cloudberry Records. Luckily, the band and the label have let it slide that they’re working together again for what I can only assume is a delightful new 7″ early next year. Here you hear those angular guitar chops dancing playfully atop brooding bass, balanced by a soft vocal performance. In order to pull off great indiepop, you’ve got to have your execution down perfectly…and listening through again and again, I’m pretty sure these guys are simply spot on. We’ll keep you posted with more news from the band and label going forward.

Be sure to spend some time sampling some of the other great tunes in the Cloudberry catalog.

Premiere: This Frontier Needs Heroes Ready Real Job

thisfrontierI’m continuing this year with my love affair (reignited!) with country/folk tunes. This Frontier Needs Heroes are readying their new album, Real Job, which falls perfectly in line with the country genre, though I’m partial to the band’s brand of storytelling. For their latest single, they start off slowly with a story of smoking in Colorado before venturing off camping. As they move on, the pace is picked up by a rolling drum and extra musical accents to add depth to the lyrics of Brad Lauretti. For me, the attraction is two-fold, as I love the rambling attitude of the musicianship, but adore the friendly dictation from Lauretti (not to mention the alliteration in the song title)…like sitting around a camping campfire with a good old friend. Indulge yourself, and look for the new album on October 14th.

Have Some New Scooterbabe

scooterI’ve kept a close eye on the Athens’ act, Scooterbabe. They’re in the midst of polishing off their latest LP, but in the meantime they have a brand new single from the Moeke Records Summer Singles Series to share with you. I think the best thing about this tune is it shows how much the band have grown in such a short time. The guitar work is quite careful, moving in and out of the speakers as the vocals are casually put on display for your ears. This sounds like a modern take on the great sound from early Jade Tree stuff. Keep your ears peeled for more new from these guys; I promise to keep you informed!

More Fun Pop from Sat. Nite Duets

satniteduetsThe guitars on this new Sat Nite Duets track encourage the listener to scurry quickly about; it’s almost punk rock, but only mostly in style. The lyrical delivery and the song’s overall steer the band away from that, building an emphatic party track. Now, I mean that in the sense that you can envision the band rocking this out in a living room surrounded by everyone they love; there’s something delightfully playful that just begs you to turn up and let go. This is just another friendly reminder that Air Guitar will be out on September 16th via Father Daughter Records.

Pleased to Meet You: Tyrannamen

tyrannWell, I’m pleased to meet Tyrannamen, though participating members of Twerps and Whipper mean I’ve likely already met the band in some form…not to mention their initial release picked up some minimal traction Stateside. That being said, the group is getting a worldwide reissue of their self-titled album via Static Shock Records. If you haven’t heard of the group before, this is a perfect introduction, offering up a ramshackle of hook-laden rock n’ roll; it’s got rough edges and pop sensibility, with a brevity that begs listeners to come back and listen time and time again. Not unlike fellow countrymen, Royal Headache, you can hear bits of soul/R&B blaring through your speakers, waiting to make you boogie down with your besties. Look for the album on September 23rd.
