Digging This Priests Video

priests-by-audrey-meltonPriests are a group out of DC that have got a right riotous sound going for them. They’ve just announced the release of their debut full length album,Nothing Feels Natural, and with that announcement, they’ve given us a taste of the sound that we can expect from the band. What they’ve showed us on “JJ” is a track that begins en medias res and doesn’t stop rocking until it’s close. The drums really make this track– the percussion is a constant, evolving presence, from stark and strong to shimmery and heavy on cymbal crashes. Meanwhile, the vocals mirror this sort of transience from the band; one moment they’re pretty and neat, the next they’re snarling at you. Overall, it’s a solid rock track, and I’m looking forward to more from Priests. Watch below.

Hooked on James Leonard Hewitson

jameslewisYou listened to that last Ought record yet (you should!). But, if you are looking for newtwisting, turning, spoken-word, artful punk, then you should tune into this James Leonard Hewitson hit. It’s got that jagged little swagger in the guitars, with overlapping vocals and voice samples layered atop one another…all of it adding to this huge wall of hook-laden tension that begs you to run…though you can’t pull yourself away. Just stuck playing this song on repeat all morning, and I feel like you deserved to be in the know. This is the second single we’ve heard from JLH, all courtesy of Endearment Records.

ATX Spotlight: Drakulas Sign to Dirtnap

drakulasYou’ve likely been following the work of the fellas in Drakulas before now, as the members of the band hail from Riverboat Gamblers and Rise Against. Luckily for us, the band have signed with our favorite rock n’ roll label(one of them anyways) to release their debut full length, Raw Wave. This first single off the new record is fast and furious, filled with ferocious hooks that live on the right side of anthemic rock n’ roll. In what’s been a banner year for the city (in my opinion) the group are adding to this year’s growing list of hits with a release on November 18th via Dirtnap Records. Check the tune!

Bouncy Pop From The Edward Furlongs

edfurlongsThe Edward Furlongs are a New Jersey based group that are focused on crafting indie pop tunes that are a meld of both old and new sounds. The track that I have for you today is called “Cold Car,” and when you take a listen, you’ll see just what the band means by a mix of old and new. There’s classic elements like acoustic guitar and horns, but there’s alsodrone-like synth and drum machine-esque percussion. The vocals are reminiscent of that you’d encounter on a Dirty Projectors track and push the track into a whole new direction. Take a listen and hear for yourself.

Hello New Cloud Nothings

cloudnothingsMan, it’s always great to hear Cloud Nothings, especially now that they seem to be kicking out nice bits of pop oriented tunes this round. Actually, one of my favorite parts of this new jam is that Dylan’s voice sounds so great…still a little bit of that scratchy growl (which I like), but nice to hear this side of him again. This song’s probably going to be everywhere by the end of the day, so feel like since we’ve always loved the group, we’ll toss this one up with the masses. Look for the band’s new album, Life Without Sound, on January 27th via Carpark.

Digging on Soviet Soviet

sovietsovietThere was a time in the early 2000s when I soaked up all these post-punk acts, especially the ones that played along the lines of the genres dark side while still looking to give me a hook; I remember Stellastarr* being one of the bands that highlighted that sound. So, hearing Soviet Soviet, I’m totally taken back, and completely falling for the group. Sure, there’s some careful moments where they’re playing with ambient noise bits, but almost the entirety of this single is this swelling hook filled bit of angular pop…that middle ground where shoegaze let us all in on underlying accessibility. The Italian act just announced Endless, and sounds like a good time to me; look for it via Felte on December 2nd.

Morningbell Reissue Boa Noite

morningbellIn case you tragically slept on Morningbell‘s brilliant 2013 release, Boa Noite, you’re in luck…the band will reissue the album this Friday along with a bonus Gold Sounds EP of never heard before tracks. These songs encompass everything I ever wanted Arcade Fire to ever be…they’re these huge orchestrated movements, swelling with pop sensibility and dripping with soul. They’ve tossed in all their heart and soul to remaster and remix these tracks, filling in all the spaces with every tool they had; it’s like they knew exactly what you needed in your life today, so they wanted to present you with this beautiful gift. I love the way this song takes these varying excursions, capturing your ear at every slight turn, particularly the closing outro after the 3 minute mark. Grab the LP from Gold Robot Records this Friday…and relish the expansive pop that still awaits you.

Hear Penelope Isles

penisI kind of glanced at Cassette Store Day, but it seems an unnecessary thing in my book, aside from the glorious tape Art Is Hard released with Penelope Isles. It was the first time I had heard of the brother/sister duo, but I’m pretty attached to them today. Sometimes these duos don’t succeed because they seem empty or lacking, but no in this case. Soothing vocals rest atop crashing drums and lightly jangling guitar chords, all the while, they weave in duet moments. It’s pretty enchanting, if you’re asking me, so go ahead and press play.

Brand New Delay Trees Brings Power Pop

Soliti Music in Finland always passes on the best hits to us from overseas, but I had no idea they had this beautiful new Delay Trees tune in wait. The group are readying their album Let Go for everyone, so why not give the world this track. It’s as if they were telling all the fans of soft power-pop, akin to Nada Surf, that all your dreams and wishes would be fulfilled. The melody here is spectacular, and the subdued vocals fit into the churning guitars in such a way that they seem to swirl inside your head. We’ll keep you posted on the release, but in the meantime, lose yourself in this delectable hump day treat.

Chilled Out New Lower Plenty Tune

lowerplentyFeels like as the year ends, folks are scrambling to get their last releases out into the world, with this new Lower Plenty high on my list of things to anticipate. Listening to their latest single, it definitely feels like this is the epitome of the great indie rock that’s come from Oceania the last several years. There’s no rush, just a casual plodding with a nice guitar ring to it. The vocals, like the guitars, just sit back and offer you warm melody, allowing you to pleasantly let the day drift by you. Look for their new album, Sister Sister, via Bedroom Suck Records on November 18th.
