Premiere: Bubbles Brown Cover Nirvana (kind of)

bubblesbrownI just wanted to grab your attention, as I think Bubbles Brown, knowing their style, are really covering Lead Belly. Sure, the Nirvana link gets a lot more attention, as radio stations won’t stop playing it, but now you have a more soulful version (as it was originally intended) to add to your collection. I love the sound of Bubbles here, pulling out the old school Southern drawl with his vocals; it’s refreshing to hear someone yank at the heartstrings and sound wholly refreshing. The two piece releasetheir brand new Oh Sure Volume One EPtoday, which will feature this nod, but don’t forget to revisit their recent release, Mt. Gilead too…you won’t wanna miss it.

Check Out These Sofar Sessions From Your ATH Faves

athrecsY’all should know by now that the bands on Austin Town Hall Records are excellent, but in case you were having any doubts about that (you’re crazy) or were wanting more to love from these bands, you’re definitely in luck, as two of our very own have recorded live Songs From a Room sessions. Below, you can see the alt-country boys of Plantation do a rendition of “Your Bones” or catch the chill vibes of Summer Salt as they do a version of “Time Away From Home.” On “Your Bones” you get the bleeding emotional alt-country that Plantation does so well, and on “Time Away From Home,” Summer Salt go acoustic and allow the vocals to really soar. Take a listen and then go snag copies ofMostIntellectualand theGoing Native EP from the ATH Records Store.

Fresh El Campo Tunes

elcampWe’re big fans of El Campo over here at ATH, and the band are giving away a few new hits today…so we figured you should take notice. The first is a newly pinned hit, building on the expansive sound the band have continuously built over their last few releases…adding depth to the current sound of Americana; the musicianship alone should warrant your ears. Then, they spin a new sound on Desaparecidos recent hit, “City on the Hill.” Honestly, this version is way better than the original, and the lyrics seem quite fitting to the band’s sound. They’re giving these tunes away, in hopes that you’ll be in love enough to come back for more…and I promise you will.

More Music from Lost Animal

lostanimalThis new Lost Animal single is exactly what I wanted today! This is precisely where I always expected pop music to go, and I’m thoroughly excited by tunes like this one. The music working in the background makes nods to the popularity of LCD Soundsystem (thought James Murphy didn’t create it), but the vocals have this incredible post Brit pop croon. It’s like Jarrod Quarrell is just working in his own world, and no matter where that takes him, he always manages to make it sound captivating. The new record is titled You Yang, coming out on October 21st via Dot Dash/Captured Tracks.

Dagars Play Space Pop

dagarsI’m really excited about the return of Grandaddy, but I’ve always been looking for like-minded groups to really give it a go at taking the reigns, much like Dallas’ Dagars do. True, they’re a little bit more spaced and atmospheric, but the vibe is definitely similar. They’ve also noted Boards of Canada as an influence, and you can hear some of the bits of sampling in this track too. It’s cool to hear acts replicating a genre that really fascinated me and let me drift away in the world.

Fresh New Jacuzzi Boys

jacuzziBeen staying away from the rockers as of late, but I can’t ever get away from listening to Jacuzzi Boys. This new jam opens with a vocal working atop a jagged guitar in the background, maximizing pop sensibility. Just after the 1 minute mark hits, the drums jump into the party, creating a buzzy bit of pop rock that’s sure. Imagine a huge wall of sound made up of everything you love at the moment, and that’ll pretty much sumup this jam of a track. Look for their new album, Ping Pong, to hit on October 28th via Mag Mag, and an Austin show on 11.2.

ACL Weekend Two Survival Tips

nd4_0723We went to Weekend One, so you didn’t have to. Now snap up one of those wristbands out there on your bookface feed and come dance. I’m taking photos this weekend, ready to be in my head space and spending the first three up front.

  • Radiohead – Get up close or surround yourself with fellow fans to drown out and shelter yourself from show talkers. Their set is gorgeous and while they didn’t play “Let Down” for me, I am hopeful for a little set list revision to make all my Radiohead dreams come true.
  • Die Antwoord – Just do it. It is a special kind of crazy that is so authentic and genuine that it cannot be denied. Yolandi and Ninja are joined by DJ Hi-Tek and dancers sporting furry costumes and inflatable fertility dolls. It is glorious.
  • Willie Nelson – We didn’t get Willie last weekend. I am more than happy to see Willie instead of Chris Stapleton. WE2 also gets Ra Ra Riot.
  • Local Natives – The weather will be great, set up the chairs, put down the blanket and get a bottle of Rose from the Wine Down and be ready for a great festival set.
  • Foals – Sweaty mess. Lose a shoe during the jams, find it again during the builders.
  • Two Door Cinema Club – Channel you inner brit-pop screaming girl and sing along. “To the basement, people, to the basement. Many surprises await you.” The rainbow thing happened just before their set.
  • LL Cool J – Come for hit montage, stay for the slightly more obscure hits you ain’t never heard live.
  • LCD Soundsystem – Where are your friends tonight? You may have lost them by 8pm on Sunday. Make new ones and dance to banger after banger from the party factory. #DFA You will likely lose something, make it memorable.

Other random thoughts: Be polite while crossing through groups that have set up living rooms on the lawn. Being rude as you walk through reinforces the dickish behavior of claiming turf with a chair circle and caution tape. The new layout is great with the exception of sound bleed-over from Cirrus to Miller Lite (minimized later in the day when more ear holes suck up the sounds, but the bottleneck between the beer hall and the rock island is gone. The park is kind of like a giant skating rink, move around the outside, slow down and lollygag at the stages. Hydrate. Get up front at least once, stay further back at least once. Less phone, more fun.

More Music from Suburban Living

suburbanlivingI tell you this Suburban Living is really doing it for me. There’s little elements of indiepop, or actually a lot of elements. Doses of twinkling keyboards, deep 80s drum rolls and soft vocals throughout. If it weren’t for the subtle cascading guitar that lurks in the background, I might call it a full indiepop gem! But, this here is enough to have me excited about the band’s forthcoming album, Almost Paradise; it’s released this Friday via 6131 Records, giving us another bunch of songs to carefully add to our list of great hits this year.

Intimate Ballad From The Person & The People

0007110867_10Last April we shared withintroduced to you Minneapolis based The Person & The People with a power pop ballad called “Hot Summer Nights”. Well Nick Costa, primary songwriter for the project, hit me up a few days ago to send along news of an album and for me to share this new track “Goin” Ape”. Fans of the previous material will notice a stark change here from what we heard back in April. This is definitely a songwriter ballad with some mesmerizing lyrics and perfect harmonies dropping in from time to time. One can feel the emotion pouring out in this song.

The Person & The People plan to drop Unemployment Blues on October 28th. Pre-order here.

Video Premiere: Altadore Treat Capable Wolf and You

Not to long ago, Altadore released their latest, Opal, Luna and Hymn, which is definitely one of those pleasurable listens that should have made it’s way to you by now (if not, find it HERE). They’ve given us the pleasure of sharing their brand new video for “Capable Wolf,” one of the many standout tracks on the record. Below you’ll find the band accompanying their delicate pop with elements of beautiful landscape, spliced between bits of road trips and band appearances. It’s the perfect way to deliver the song, as the careful touches of strings arrangements definitely create visions fitting for the video version. Feel free to lose yourself in both song and visual; your morning will be better off for it!
