Sprawling Pop from Tweed and Hyenas

yl4glxaWhen you press play on the latest track from Tweed & Hyenas, be prepared to indulge your listening skills. As you’ll notice, the song moves along rather slowly, creeping along fantastically. Each vocal note is placed carefully, much as all the instrumentation is used sparingly, allowing for the filling of pop sensibility. Plus, those vocal notes are quite remarkable, almost perfect in every note. It all leads you towards a wondrous closing minute and a half, recalling the best, and most accessible, bits of Grizzly Bear. The band is currently wrapping up their first EP, and lets hope this gem is on it.

New Music from The Trouble with Templeton

troublewithtempI hate to pigeonhole folks, but there’s something late 90s brewing in the sounds emanating from The Trouble with Templeton. You’ll hear a gentle trait in the vocals, moving carefully along with the maneuvering guitar work. It all comes to a head when the group hits the bright burst of pop during the chorus. I can’t place it entirely, but those nostalgic hints definitely have me gravitating to the band’s craft. The Brisbane outfit will be releasing Someday, Buddy on December 2nd via Bella Union, which will feature the hit below.

Infectiously Funky Pop From Rubblebucket

rubblebucketThere’s a chance you’ve already seen this track somewhere around in internetland, but if you missed it, it’s time you take a listen. Rubblebucket are an ‘indie-sweat-pop’ group out of Brooklyn that have got a real gem of a track for you to jam to.”If U C My Enemies,” embodies the idiom of ‘being the bigger person,’ or perhaps, more topically, ‘when they go low, we go high.’ The horn riffs that jump straight out at the top of the song and cap things off at the close provide the perfect bookends of funkiness to the heavily percussive track. It’s pure pop, sure, but damn it if those handclaps and scream-along chorus hasn’t gotten me singing with them.

This track is taken from the band’s upcoming EP with the same title, which will be out January 20th.

ATX Spotlight: Dana Falconberry Offers Solace

Dana FalconberryAs of late, my social media feed has been filled with anger, and deservedly so. But, as we seek to move forward and make changes, we’re all seeking comfort on some level. Austin musician Dana Falconberry opted to do what she does best, sharing a beautiful track she recorded about recovering from grief while working as a resident artist/musician in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park. Perhaps this is the solace you were looking for, and if not, then perhaps you can just revel in her songwriting, which is always remarkable.

Love This New Ne-Hi

Chicago’s Ne-Hi has been on our radar for sometime, but with the announcement of their new album, it looks like we’ve got something delicious waiting for us on the other side of the New Year. The band uses this video to unleash a slow-paced hook, matched by the footage seemingly shot in a similar fashion. For me, as per usual, the vocal tones are what hooks me…reminds me a bit of our friends the Young Girls…not quite on pitch, but quite off either. Grand Jury is going to be handling the release of Offers, which comes out on February 24th of 2017.

Meet the Bellamys

bellamysAs the year winds down a bit, music is getting sparse…new music anyways. But, the folks over at Oddbox Records still have one great release up their sleeve: The Bellamys EP. Discordant guitars ring while the drums rhythmically push the track forward; the vocals are dominated by a female vocalist…until the later moments of the song where a male voice enters as the counterpoint. While it’s a quick track, the sound sits with you, giving it the impression of being seemingly longer. The EP is being released on a limited run of cassettes on December 2nd, so hurry and grab one before they’re gone forever.

Ty Segall Changes Direction with New Single

tysegall05If you caught Ty Segall playing a few acoustic sets last year, then perhaps you were aware at just how powerful his music can be, even when it’s stripped down. That’s what you’re going to get on this latest track, even with a backing band; this is perhaps the most ballad-driven tune he’s written in some time, and I welcome that. I bet someone out there is even thinking its got hints of Bowie, but I’m just appreciative that he’s tossing out a little variation. Not sure how long-lived this approach will be, as press release claims a whole bunch of neck work, but for now, his new self-titled album has my interest; it comes out on January 27th via Drag City.

Stream the New Single from DA Stern

daWhen I first pressed play on this track, I immediately thought of Joey Ramone’s voice, which took me to a happy place. Something in the opening with the guitar reminds me of “I Want You Around,” but then it turns into a more calming take on Teenage Fanclub. Take those two things into play, and you’ve got a really great pop tune that rings in your speakers loud enough to make you feel alive. DA Stern will release his new album, Aloha Hola, on January 20th of next year via Twosyllable Records, so be on the lookout for huge riffs and good melodies.

New Music from Rory McVicar

roryI’ve let Rory McVicar grace our little site before, and his newest song is proof that I was on to something special. It begins in almost a melancholy fashion, slowly unfolding from the opening moments…give it about a minute. Then, just as you settled, the drums kick in, there’s a bit of a bounce and the song takes on almost an indiepop fashion. Eventually, the song fades out into experimental drones, but the impression should have been felt from the get-go. You’ll hear this track on Rory’s new record Wednesday Week, which comes out in the very near future.

Pleased to Meet You: Corner Suns

cornersonsI’ve been fans of Corner Suns previous acts, so I’ll happily dig on what the duo of Brandon Carr (the Earlies) and John Dufilho (Apples in Stereo) offer with this new adventure. Our first listen has this brooding bit of experimental pop, opening with a darkened guitar line and a tinkering piano as the vocals echo in from the distance. There’s definitely a hint of psychedelia too, which isn’t a bad thing, especially as they bring in the pop underbelly throughout. Both these guys were involved incredible bands, so hearing this, I expect nothing but the best when they release their self-titled debut on January 13th.
