Mat Hunsley Croons New Single

My schizophrenic music day looks to bring in a folk vibe in my listening, encouraged by this great new Mat Hunsley track. The musical performance here is rather sublime, but also fairly limited, built around intimate strumming with some added layers. What will steal the show for your ears is Hunsley’s voice; this is the sound you want to hear as you’re fading off into a deep slumber. It’s soothing, softening around each corner as Mat offers up the notes. Those of you looking for great voices in your ear today will hopefully pick up on this new gem.

Trevor Sensor Announces Debut LP, Shares New Track

If you’ve been following along with the success of young Trevor Sensor, you’ll know that he’s signed to Jagjaguwar and has been getting some much deserved attention. It pleases me to announce that with this signing he’s also just announced his debut album,Andy Warhol’s Dream, and shared a new single/video. “High Beams” is below, which features Sensor and his signature scraggily pipes touting his guitar in front of various landscape shots with some backup dancers doing their thing. It’s a silly concept for a great track, and I’m digging the fast pace of this song and americana bounce to the piano. Take a listen.

Andy Warhol’s Dreamwill be out June 16th via Jagjaguwar.

Suntrodden Is Back with a New EP

I raved and raved about Suntrodden last year, and now we return with the latest piece from his final work in his 3-EP series, III. As usual Erik’s tossing a gentle vocal atop really carefully crafted pop styles; this is what always draws me into his songwriting. But, I really like the attention given to the recording, with various textures of guitar added atop one another to really add depth to the song…not to mention a little bit of keys hanging about too. The latest edition in the series will drop on June 30th, so you can bet you’ll hear more from us as the release date nears.

Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever Share New Video

Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever are steadily becoming one of my favorite bands, so it’s only natural that I share with you their new video for “Sick Bug” off their recently releasedFrench PressEP. I love the way this track rambles along quickly with the endless guitar riffs and the vibrant vocals. Much like the rest of the songs from RBCF, it’s a solid jam that you should turn up loud to get through the rest of your Friday.

Electropop Vibes from Black Fly

This new tune from Vermont’s Black Fly is really getting me ready for the weekend. It has this darkened electropop vibe, prompted by heavy synth lines and a natural hook in the song’s craft. The vocals have the tendency to spin things slightly differently, almost more geared towards anthemic indie rock; it serves to give the tune a bit of contrast between the melody and the driving rhythm. It’s a fun little number that definitely will pick up your spirits…if you dig TRUST, then this is your new favorite jam.

Show Preview: Desert Culture Album Release Show (Tonight!!)

Tonight is a good night for music in the ATX, but one show in particular has our attention. Local psych/surf rockers, Desert Culture, are releasing their new record, They’re Not Gone tomorrow, and are playing a release show this evening at Cheer Up Charlie’s. They’re joined by a great crew of other local acts, such as Buenos Diaz, Lola Tried, Skyline The Band and Jack Ferarra. Doors are at 8 and music starts at 9. You can see set times and details here, but for now, check out “Elva” below.

New Music from Shrouded Strangers

Shrouded Strangers have a new LP coming out pretty soon, and I’m really digging the sound of the future. To my ears, it sounds like they’re taking on a fuzzy blend of old school college rock. Sure, there’s a natural melody that comes through, but little bits of guitar distortion bleed through the speakers and a layer of atmospherics ride the top of the whole tune. Still, don’t deny that there’s a hook waiting for audiences, reminding me of The Comas (RIP). Night Prancing is the title of the new effort, and it should be reaching us all at some point in the near future.

Bright Indie Rock From Grumpus

What starts as a calm folksy indie rock ditty amps up intensely as Grumpus leaps full on into the track. This song appeals to your radio indie rock sensibilities and the quick tongued lyrics and finite instrumental sounds go great with both the quiet side of the track as well as the harder, climactic ending. The vibrant guitar riff that underscores the beginning of the song converts well to the grittier transformation. Take a listen and then take another listen; “Passepartout” is only two minutes and forty three seconds, but you’ll be spending some time with this one.

A Day Late To The Party: Hear A New Track From Kevin Morby

This track came out yesterday as a part of the ‘Our First 100 Days,’ which did a solid job at getting a ton of great artists to record songs for charity. Yesterday’s track came from ATH fave Kevin Morby and it was too good to pass up without sharing it with the internets. The song is called “Bag of Rats” and it’s classic Kevin Morby with the bluesy rock undertones and Morby’s songwriting at the forefront of the tune, the punchline of the chorus his declaration that he’s “a bag of rats,” which frankly, feels a bit relatable. Take a listen below.

You should throw some money over here to good causes and own all these tracks as part of a limited release. I mean, how else are we going to make it past 100 days?

More New Mountain Movers

Myfirst listen to Mountain Movers introduced meto the band with notes taken from acts like Spiritualized and the like, but they’re bringing you something that you might find a little more spirited. There’s a rolling movement from the guitars and the pounding rhythm of the drum work, reminiscent of Woods; they provided this sunny hook that rides through the chorus, while still maintaining an effortless cool. They’re about to break out of New Haven and find a place on your record player when Trouble In Mind Records release their self-titled on May 5th.
