Rock Out With Great Grandpa

Seattle is often a place for guitar heavy rock music, and hometown band Great Grandpa really are no different. The band recently shared this new track “Teen Challenge” and it is a welcome bit of rock music in this sometimes diluted indie world. Guitars are heavy, drums are nice and loud, and I love the vocal delivery with the occasional Buddy Holly style hiccup. What’s not to like?

Great Grandpa will release their debut album Plastic Coughon July 7th via Double Double Whammy.

Delicious Indiepop from The Fireworks

Sometimes you get lucky and an unexpected hit comes your way, such as the brand new 7″ that just popped up from The Fireworks. The group has come a long way since their early EP, most notably the switch to Beth Arzy (Lux Signal/Trembling Blue Stars) on vocals; she seems to have made way for a cleaner dosage of indiepop, allowing the band to work around her melodic voice. Don’t you worry longtime fans, “We’ve Been Wasting Time” offered up that distorted guitar ring in your ears just as Arzy smooths the edges; I love the bounce provided by the drum work here too. If you missed this, better go grab it from Shelflife, as it won’t be around too much longer!

Brand New Quin Galavis Track

After releasing My Life in Steel and Concrete last year, Quin Galavis isback again with a brand new album, though this time with a little bit more of a familiar sound. The song opens up with some careful chord work, as Quin seemingly whispers into the microphone. He seems calm and ready to take on a return to rock n’ roll; this is precisely what he does as he sings “I’ll forget the answer/to the final question” stretching his voice to its higher tones. Even for fans of his former band, The Dead Space, this seems like Quin at his most accessible, surely ready to endear him to a huge group of new listeners (or so I hope). TheBattery Line will be released by Super Secret Records on June 16th.

New Finnmark Music and Video

Usually I hound the Finnmark! soundcloud page waiting for new music, and while I was trolling the Internet, I saw that the band have a new song on the Secret Garden Comp for Fallen Love Records. The group have been fairly quiet since their Things Always ChangeLP (sadly Sold Out), but hopefully this points at a new release. This song has some deeper tones, especially in the way the bass lines are working; it works in contrast to the slight shuffling jangle that’s working beneath the mix. I really like the drum roll emphasis too, hitting the right notes at the perfect time. The compilation is available now, and hopefully we hear more from the group soon!

Quiet Tune From Angelo De Augustine

Big news for LA’s Angelo De Augustine— he’s just signed to Asthmatic Kitty Records and released his first 7″. “Truly Gone” is exactly the kind of music you would expect to be on Sufjan Stevens’ record label. It’s a soft and delicate number, with whispery vocals that flow through the song like trees swaying in a gentle breeze. I’m reminded a bit of Elliott Smith here in the simplistic, yet moving, quality in the guitar and vocal combination. Check out Angelo De Augustine and add a little serenity to the afternoon.

You can pick up this limited edition 7″ here, and then look out for a full length coming this summer.

 

Leather Girls Break Out New Single

While the modern era of psychedelia has gotten a bit bogged down with a dime-a-dozen cliched acts, it’s good to see a band like Leather Girls making it entirely their own. The video definitely wears the psych aesthetic, as do the guitars as they work and shuffle atop each other. But, what draws me into the band’s music is their penchant to make it a wee bit grittier, a wee bit more rock n’ roll. Putting this song on you’ll push yourself into territory where you picture yourself frantically spinning and stomping your feet, spinning about uncontrollably as joy overwhelms you. The band are releasing their self-titled album on June 2nd via Yippee Ki Yay Records.

Enchanting Guitar Pop from Kidsmoke

Looks like today’s special is guitar pop, and Kidsmoke are sure to be one of your quick favorites for the day. It doesn’t take long for the song’s vocals to enter the picture, and sweep you away as the guitars dreamily dangle in the distance; it’s almost dreamy, but there’s so much clarity in the recording that you’ll find it hard not to see it as straight-ahead pop music. It kinds of reminds me of our friends in Austin, Shivery Shakes, pulling in some of that sunny West Coast vibes from the guitar lines, while still focusing on the cooling of the vocal display. The band will drop their new EP next month, but for now, just another gem to get your day headed in the right direction.

New Kane Strang Jam

Kane Strang was high up on my list of must-see artists at SXSW this year, and I was fortunate enough to catch him a couple of times. He has this ability to take the modern indie stylings of Oceanic pop and combine them with really infectious hooks; I heard a lot of nods to early Weezer in his performance. That being said, this song holds steady during the verses, offering a slight energy pick up, which quickly turns into an airy pop dosage that fades with the closing of the song. I promise you that his new album, Two Hearts and No Brain, will be something to make your musical world a better place; it hits on June 30th via Dead Oceans.

The No Ones Hit the Spot

I’ve long followed I Was a King, and they’ve been fortunate to work with some great folks, but they’ve upped the ante by forming the No Ones, which includes two members of the band, as well as Peter Buck and Scott McCaughey (REM and the Minus 5, respectively). Together, they’ve recorded a beautiful look into the best pop music has to offer. There’s a familiarity to Frode’s voice; it’s been a constant in my listening rotation since I first came upon IWaK. In under two minutes, you’ll find beautifully textured harmonies that hold a natural sparkle, and the only bummer is that it will leave you thirsting for more. You’ll have to wait until June 23rd to hear the whole Sun Station EP on Coastal Town Recordings…with a rumored LP to follow later in the year.
