Announcing Austin Jukebox 7

If you haven’t been paying close attention to the Austin Jukebox series, then you haven’t been paying close attention to Austin’s music scene. These shows are built around an eclectic variety, usually bringing in a legendary act; they’ve previously featured acts like James Chance and The Cherubs. But, for my two cents, I love how the bills feature some variety, so you’ll get a legend, but the acts are fleshed out with different styles and tastes…you get a little bit of everything. Here we are to announce Austin Jukebox 7 with a great brief video featuring music from the headliners, Rocket from the Tombs.

The bill will also feature ST 37, Will Courtney and Horne + Holt. But, be warned, the shows are affordable and take place at Beerland, so expect a line if you don’t get there early! Show goes down on May 19th, doors at 7PM.

Introducing: Lo Tom

Supergroup alert! And not just any supergroup, a band featuring one of our longtime faves David Bazan. He’s joined in this new group called Lo Tom by Jason Martin (Starflyer 59), Trey Many (Velour 100/Starflyer 59), and TW Walsh (Pedro the Lion/The Soft Drugs). So apparently these guys made some music together awhile back, sat on the songs for sometime, and have decided to release them now. Below you’ll find their first single entitled “Overboard”. It’s sure to make some of you old school Pedro fans incredibly excited. Pees pants a little….

A debut album is coming sometime this year on Barsuk.

Lovely Folksy Track From Bedouine

Bedouine has shared a new video for the track “Solitary Daughter,” and it’s shaping up to be my track of the day, as it’s matching up perfectly with the rain that’s over Austin right now. The tune features effortless songwriting, gentle and timeless acoustic guitar accompanying the fluttering vocals of Azniv Korkejian. The video that accompanies the tune shows depicts Korkejian peacefully playing the guitar with an old-timey overlay on it, complete with fadeouts of landscape images. Check it out the tranquil tune below.

New Music from Cesar Ruiz

Cesar Ruiz spends a lot of time playing with both Dogbreth and Diners, both bands we enjoy, but he’s stepping out into the light on his own. The guitar work is really crisp, though also walking the current line between 80s nostalgia and dream pop. His vocals are definitely refreshing; there’s a real clarity that allows you to focus on his innate ability to provide playful pop sensations to his audience. If you’re looking for a relaxed ditty to push you out into the afternoon sun, then look no further. His album For Music Lovers will be available in June.

Jesse (of Pure X) Shares Mellow Tune

Pure X’s Jesse has made the news today with the sharing of his second single, “De-pression” from his upcoming album release. When you click play below, you’ll be bathed in a melancholy groove of bedroom pop. The vocals are smoky and distant, yet oddly comforting through the funky bass line and the crunchy percussion. There’s a coolness to the track that comes from the synth squalls and backing “oohs” that makes you want to close your eyes and zone out for a few minutes. Take a listen below.

Hard Skywill be out June 23rd via Uniform Group. Go pre-order one of the limited LPs here.

A Sure Hit From Dave Depper

The danceable tracks just don’t seem to stop coming today and the latest groove is from Dave Depper and features the lovely vocals from Laura Gibson to help out. “Your Voice On The Radio” packs a lovely blend of electro pop and dueling vocals with a proper build up and hooky chorus to get you singing along. From the start you get pulsating synths that bubble under and grow the tension with aid from some psychedelic guitar riffs. Of course you can’t ignore the crisp vocal aid from Laura Gibson that makes the track really stand out in terms of electro pop. Take a listen and get stoked for Dave Depper’s upcoming release, Emotional Freedom Technique, which will be out June 9th via Tender Loving Empire.
