Olden Yolk Announce Debut Album on Trouble in Mind

When listening to this track, the knowledge that Olden Yolk is the project of Shane from Quilt might inform your listening. That’s well and good, but what you should also note is the indulgence in the true atmosphere of psychedelia crafted in the track below. Notes billow like smoke in a dimly lit room, with time taken to really let the guitar licks to find their own way into the world. The vocal performance is quite captivating as well, especially when joined by a heavy vocal accompaniment that’s sure to entrance you. The debut self-titled LP will be released by Trouble in Mind on February 23rd.

The Bankees Are Back

It hasn’t been that long since the last release from The Bankees, but we were under the impression that Friends (2015) would be the last release from our favorite French popsters. Luckily, Simon reached out this week to drop me their new album, Sunny Days. It’s carefully crafted casual pop music, with hints of Kevin Morby or Dan Bejar, but what I love is that the track are succinct, with only a couple of the tunes stretching beyond the 3 minute mark. You’ll find this record fits perfectly into your afternoon rotation, letting you drift off into the slow crawl of the day.

New Tunes from Totally Mild

We’ve already covered our Best of Oceania for 2017, but something I’m already penciling in will be the newest album from Totally Mild. This new single is strikingly bare, but in that, it delivers the powerful emotional connection listeners seek; it’s almost as if we’re sitting in the drawing room of Elizabeth Mitchell while she works on a newly penned tune. It’s impressive with how memorable this song is, despite employing piano and vocals as the key element; Mitchell’s performance will fill your room through your speakers. Look for the band’s new LP, Her, on February 23rd via Chapter Music.

It’s that silly time of year when we ascribe arbitrary rankings to the music created by our favorite artists. And, I’ve already seen a few lists from the likes of Paste or Rolling Stone (among others) that I find completely off the mark. Now, our ATH End of Year list will be a team effort, so here is a list of records I adored that probably won’t end up on too many other “Best of Lists,” though I think they should! Again, no particular order, just ten albums you should enjoy. …that you might have forgotten about.

Minimalistic Pop From Still Parade

What’s left for us to say about Berlin based Niklas Kramer and his project know as Still Parade? Likely not much as we’ve posted his music on multiple occasions and even interviewed him a time or two. That aside, the guy is continuing to pump out some incredible music and I’m excited to share his latest single today called “Should Have Known”. What you’ll find is a very minimalistic take on electronic pop music. With such a pared down song, you wouldn’t expect to find such beauty, but Niklas continues to impress with his unique take on songwriting. Carry on.

Still Parade will drop the Kindness EP on December 15th.

New Music from Bill Baird

On Friday, one-time Austinite Bill Baird will release his latest outing, Straight Time; he says it will be the last self-recorded/produced of his for awhile. On the tune below, he paints an ode to Austin, filled with various local native name drops, but ultimately, it’s the song that takes hold of you. It’s an ambling track, riding this beautiful guitar sound to the promised land; it’s almost as if you’re sitting in the back of a convertible on a warm Texas afternoon, cruising down the interstate as Bill coolly blasts his vocals through your stereo speakers. Somehow he’s captured the essence of Austin in song; I particularly enjoy the slow burn of the chorus before he jumps into the “Wilford Brimley” line. If you want to know what this city’s all about, give this tune a listen…and be sure to grab Straight Time on Friday.

Bartees and the Strange Fruit

Bartees Cox might not be the household name you’re looking for, but his work as Bartees & the Strange Fruit is likely to be impacting. His new album Magic Boy is a collection of songs about family and black life, but as important is his love for the recording process…obsessions with reel to reel and tape recordings are present throughout. His voice has this powerful fragility to it, melodically stepping atop warped loops and notes…with a female vocal accompaniment driving home the emotional appeal. You’ll be able to hear his new album in its entirety when it sees a release on December 8th via Pineapple Record Co.

Real Banger From Table Scraps

Man when things get busy around here, they really get busy. I’ve been pushing through quite a hectic time with the ol real job recently, but I can always find some time to publish new rock n roll tunes. Today I’m back on the wagon with this real banging garage rock tune called “Sick of Me” from Birmingham, UK based band Table Scraps. This thing is basically a simple, straightforward rock number similar to something you might hear from Ty Segall or the like. You shall enjoy.

Table Scraps will release Autonomy on February 3rd via Zen Ten Records.

New Ditty from Austin’s Hola Beach

I’m always a sucker for a good pop song, especially when the execution of said song is pulled off to perfection…like this new tune from Hola Beach. This track employs a really bare bones approach for the opening two minutes, with the drum sitting way in the back of the mix in order for the natural melody to unfold in step with the guitar notes. A few of those notes meander out of context, crafting the slightest bit of tension leading to the crashing wave of the song’s last minute. Look for their new EP to drop this weekend!

Makeness Shares New Video

Makeness, aka Kyle Mollesonout of London, is making sick electronica tunes.This track, called “Day Old Death,” reminds me a lot of early Sun Airway. The song slowly comes to life, paralleled by the visuals in the music video, with electronic elements creating a groove for you to shake it to. Beyond the danceable aspect of the track, there’s something haunting in the distant vocals and the undercutting guitar riffs that make you want to play this track on repeat all day. Check it out below and get excited for the band’s debut album, which will be out on Secretly Canadian next year.
