SXSW Interview: Mamalarky
Just last week we shared the new track from Mamalarky, who have some roots here in our hometown…so we reached out to Livvy to see if she could answer our questionnaire, and she graced us with the kindness to respond. We’ve also included the band’s tour dates during SXSW at the end of the interview.
ATH:Whats the name of the band/group? Where are you from?
M: Mamalarky. We’re originally from Austin, now LA. Our keyboard player Michael Hunter is still based in Austin, so we link up every couple months to record and tour. It’s a dedicated LDR.
ATH: Describe your groups sound.
M: Lionel from this band Vinyl Williams said we sound like a band playing in a saloon on the beach in ultra harmony.
ATH: What was your most recent release? Any planned releases from 2019?
M: We released our EP ‘Fundamental Thrive Hive’ last May, and our next single ‘Hero’ is out now!
ATH: For most SXSW sets, you get 30 minutes to leave a lasting impression. Whats your plan of attack? You have a set list mapped out yet?
M: The plan of attack is to go up and play our songs and hope for the best, haha. Our set list is always subject to change depending on the mood of the room and the sound system, but we’re definitely most excited to play the newer songs that aren’t released yet.
ATH: Lets say your band has been booked an official showcase at a pop up venue somewhere in the middle of 6th street. The lineup features thrash metal, hip-hop, spoken word, and you. The sound is horrible, the lineup is not your style, and the crowd seems angry at the world. How would your band deal with such a situation?
M: I expect this to happen at least once, haha. I’d be excited to hear the rest of this random ass bill, sometimes the weirdest shows are the most fun.
ATH: There are tons of bands coming into town. Of the 1000+ bands coming into town, who would you ideally like to play with. What band friends will be here?
M: Jerry Paper is coming and we love them so much! Being Dead is and Austin band we’re consistently excited to see. Rosie Tucker is coming from LA and Kaycie Satterfield is coming from NYC, they’re both amazing upcoming rippers.
ATH: What has everyone in the band been listening to, or, what plays in the tour van/car/bus?
M: Jake Tobin, YELLOW MAGIC ORCHESTRA, Brenton Wood.
ATH: Describe your perfect festival, real or not? Whos headlining? Wheres it take place? Etc.
M: The perfect festival takes place in LA, so I don’t have to pay to travel, and the weather’s generally nice. Let’s have Shannon & The Clams, The Go! Team, Nai Palm, Anderson.Paak, Deerhoof, & Melanie Faye.
ATH: Whats on the bands rider? If were bringing you food and booze, what can we bring you?
M: We’re gonna need these burritos we got in Atlanta at this place called Elmyr, a couple vegan ones and a couple of the pad thai burritos. Preferably joints over booze.
