Enjoy a New Single from Mini Trees

Sometimes it takes a long while to sort of wade through the waters of life, especially for drummers. But, Lexi Vega has made it through, stepped out from behind the drum kit and crafted this brilliant new EP under the name Mini Trees. Our first listen has this really soft tone throughout, but there’s enough of a natural hook that really draws you over. I’m personally taken aback by Vega’s performance, she sort of lets her voice ride up and down on the melody, while never trying to overdo things. I’ve got high expectations for the Steady Me EP, which will drop this May.

Enjoy the Latest from At Mission Dolores

Monday feels mellow today, so what better way to begin things than with the quieted track from At Mission Dolores. The song has this ability to sound like a looped tape project, but also this longing folk number that stretches through your memory. In the vocals you’ll find this faint ethereal quality, notes sort of hang and float in the air, drifting into the distance. It feels like this song’s been on a journey all on its own, which makes sense considering it appears on the band’s latest release, Cool World, which was recorded and mixed all over as the pieces fell into place. The release of Cool World is being handled by Factotum.

Bubblegum Lemonade Share Final Single

You were wondering how we were going to wrap up the day? Well, we could have done so by streaming another album, Desperately Seeking Sunshine, but we’ve opted to give you their final single before you go over to Matinee Recordings and grab it yourself. It’s the perfect sendoff to a Friday, filled with bright chords that seem to radiate sunshine like an angel’s light shining through your speakers. Plus, Laz throw’s in some “sha la las” throughout the track, so you’d have to have lost your heart if you’re not tapping your toes and grinning as you listen. If your world seems like a lonely place, or you just love great pop music, listen to this track from Bubblegum Lemonade over and over and on and on again.

Meet the Squiggles!

What do you do when you call it a day on a revered band? Well, if you’re Niall, who was the phenomenal drummer from the Spook School, you up and start a new band like the Squiggles. Today we get to hear what that sounds like, and we couldn’t be happier for him. It’s a bouncy little rocker with emphatic vocals and discordant chords coursing through things. I love how he still chooses to include those anthemic lyrics built for energetic live performances destined to make fans fawn. Plus, the video lets you catch Niall in his natural habitat; he’s one of the funniest, warmest humans you’re likely to meet. We’re super happy for him, and look forward to hearing the entirety of The Recruitment Drive EP.

Stream There’s No Fight We Can’t Both Win from Mammoth Penguins

By now, if you’re one of the 8 people reading these pages, you know how much I’ve been looking forward to hearing the entirety of There’s No Fight We Can’t Both Win, the new LP from Mammoth Penguins. Today’s the day that it drops, giving us further insight into the band’s return to a slimmed down 3 piece (after the John Doe release). While there are some definite pop rocking numbers, my early time with the LP has me falling for “There is So Much More;” it’s a really soft tune, giving the album some diversity so it doesn’t wear on you…not to mention there’s no such thing as a bad Kupa performance. If you love your pop music, you’ll love this album, so go grab it from Fika Recordings, or stream it below!

Listen to More Film School

Film School is one of those bands that really makes me angry about the world. They offer this dreamy indie rock that sort of fuses all these brilliant elements, but sadly, everyone else gets to take home the glory. Here, they almost seem like their looking upon the early days of Interpol with reverence; it’s a bit post-punks in its natural propulsion, though there’s just a bit more shimmer in the guitar. I always get carried away with this group, playing their songs non-stop, and I can feel myself going there today. Look out for the group’s new EP this Summer, or keep your eyes peeled as they hit the road with Mint Field.

More New Monnone Alone

Mark Monnone’s been teasing us with a single here and a single there, but now we finally have what we knew was coming, the announcement of the second Monnone Alone LP. It takes just 8 seconds for the song to hit you smack in your pop face, dropping this huge riff to match Monotone’s voice. Interestingly, the delivery here of those vocals almost has a snarky punk attitude to it, which for me, bridges the gap between power-pop and indiepop, making the song all the more appealing in my ears. Summer of the Mosquito will be out on May 10th via all your favorite pop labels (too many to name).

A Bit Of Jangle-Pop From ViVii

Stockholm’s ViVii just dropped a new track today that is perfect for the sunny and hot day that we’re having today in Austin. “Fibromyalgia” is a ray of warm sunshine-y jangly pop that will have your toes tapping and your heart swooning. First you get the trade off of male / female vocals in the verses while those bright guitar riffs roll over each other over and over again. Then, during the chorus the two voices of Emil and Caroline Johnson come together in a dreamy, perfect pairing. It’s a lovely track, packed with energy delightful hooks. Check it out below and make sure you take a listen further to the band’s debut self-titled LP here.

Fanclub Continue Their Hit Streak with Imprint

While the core of my love for indiepop revolves around the sound of the guitars, the latest single from our local faves Fanclub really has the band pushing the electronic vibe this round. If you’ve caught their live shows, or listened to other singles, those elements have existed, but here they’re more prominent, giving Leslie plenty of room to spin her vocal magic. It’s like a bedroom pop version of what we all fell in love with for that first Postal Service record, with just an added guitar boost hanging in the song’s latter half. Before soon, I reckon the band will have another delight to share with you all.
