Guru Drop Double A-side

GURU is a Brighton based band we’ve posted about a few times over the years on ATH and I personally have grown to love their style and sound. Yesterday the band announced not one, but two new songs dropping as a part of a double A-side experience. Both of the songs, “Don’t Talk” and “LTD” can be found for your streaming pleasure below. The first will hit you in the jaw with a fast and raucous pace in a more traditional punk rock style. Then the second will slow things down a little bit, but not too much, for more of an anthemic, epic song adventure. Both are fantastic.

Elizabeth Gives Us Another Tune

I’m always up for a new track from Elizabeth, and with her new LP just a few weeks away, I think she’s dropped what, so far, is my favorite of the pre-album singles here. Something about her voice in this one really hits at home; it almost has this 80s nostalgic pop sound, though it doesn’t sound too far off from something with Hope Sandoval (or any number of Sarah Records acts). There’s this beautiful moment when it rises up near the end, and Elizabeth has another powerful performance to make all her peers shake. Plus, the arrangements of this song are really emotive, strong where they need to be, and pulled back when necessary. The Wonderful World of Nature is going to be some debut; it drops on November 1st.

New Indiepop from Lost Film

Having just recently announced a brand new album, we’ve now got the next single from Lost Film‘s forthcoming Zero Summer. For me, I was struck by the way the vocals were done, at least in the opening few lines; there’s this group vocal vibe that almost gives off this feeling that we’re all in this together. There’s a slight uptick in energy during the chorus, with the beat working just a little bit faster, holding tight to Jimmy Hewitt’s crisp guitar lines throughout. This is shaping up to be a collection of heartfelt pop songs that are sure to charm the pants off anyone who takes the time to indulge their sweet tooth here.

Stream Alaska from Ultim Cavall

It’s Friday, and people are all about those streams, but I want you to be all about those pop songs; the kind that instinctively make you swoon, like the entire LP from Ultim Cavall. I’ve given you a few of these tunes already, and I know that the non-English lyrical content is a bit of a stretch…but dammit if these songs don’t just you want to learn new languages. The entirety of Alaska walks this line between bouncy indiepop and the dreamiest of dream pop numbers. “Els Ilacs” is a jam and a half, but I’ve really grown partial to the title track, “Alaska.” Just ten solid pop tracks to make your life infinitely better. Matthew Paul Butler Drops New Single

I grew up in a house surrounded by singer-songwriters; my dad was a huge Townes fan to say the least, so the genre has always been dear to my heart. So, here comes this great Matthew Paul Butler track popping its head into my weird little indiepop world. It’s weird how you notice the odd little things that make a song, like for me, the piano lines really make this track come together. I’m drawn to the natural tension in Butler’s voice; you can feel it push the song to its edge, finally breaking in a shattering fashion near the song’s latter half where all that emotion is unleashed onto the listener. Open yourself to this tune and you’ll be grateful, then turn your attention towards Hymns for the Dying, his new LP out on Epifo on November 15th.

Brand New Track from Romantic States

In case you haven’t noticed, I’m super high up on my love for Romantic States, and now with the title track from the group’s forthcoming Ballerina LP, I’m just going all in. For me, this track’s all about Ilenia’s performance; she seems so calm, yet so expressive in the slightest ways…like syllables with emphatic punch or dropping off at the last second. Behind her is the steadying rhythm section and the slightly jangling guitar chords; it’s like they’ve sponsored an indiepop seance and decided to write the whole score; you’re captivated with no room to escape, luckily. Their new LP will be out on November 6th via Gentle Reminder Records.

Another Austin City Limits is behind us boys and girls and it’s always a good time to reflect on the music and experiences from the weekend. I considered myself very lucky to spend more time out during Weekend 2 when the weather was a bit cold and then incredible. The rain was limited and refreshing, and the colder weather brought out everyone’s best ACL hoodie. Once again, fun was had by everyone in attendance and the music was killer. Woolen Men Announce New LP

There were whispers a few months ago that Woolen Men would be returning with a new LP, and I’m so glad they’re back, and doing it in perfect fashion, if I say so myself. It’s really hard to pigeonhole the group as they’re one throwing so much in the mixture that it’s just an amalgam of glorious rock n’ roll references. You’ll hear a brightness in the crisp guitar notes at the beginning, while the vocals take on this almost Ian MacKaye yelp to them. But, the guitars get a little bit grittier, they start to fray at the edges, chords begin to sort of dance anxiously about..all the while the vocals steady the show. Eventually, everything descends into this chaos, riffing and shooting this way and that…then a quick chirp from those bright guitars brings us full circle. Their new effort Human to Human will be out on November 22nd, just before the cool kid list party starts, so save this bunch a spot.

El Lago Share Citadel

We’re about a week or so away from the release of the newest release from El Lago, and they’ve left us with one corker of a track. There’s definitely a braver sound than we got on the band’s first LP; the guitars open with this immediate squall, feeding back in seeming anguish. That’s countered by Lauren’s voice, which, at times, takes on this quivering Bjork quality to it. But, when circling back through the song, it’s the gentle crest of the song that really seals it. The group bring back in their pop sensibility, peeling away the layers to bring in this clean glimmering sound that looks back on the band’s early work. The Pyramid EP is out on October 25th.

Caroline Says Announce Ohio River EP

Been a hot minute since we’ve heard from Caroline Sallee and her project, Caroline Says…until today. Today we got news that there’s a new Ohio River EP coming out in the not-to-distant future, courtesy of Western Vinyl. The song is said to be about returning to a quaint Southern town whilst looking through a new lens; finding a fondness in the past, but perhaps a bit of sadness in the realization that nothing stays the same as our memories. Musically, it’s perfectly matched with the river image, as the song sort of moves in that fashion; the musical waters are twisting, snaking, crawling to the mouth of the . It’s there we find Sallee’s vocals, washing over the song, lapping at the melodic edges with this smoky grace. The band will be on tour with Hovvdy throughout the end of October and into November; the EP drops on November 22nd.
