Bops of the Week: July 5th – 9th

Here we are on another Monday, about halfway through the musical calendar, and while I should probably be working on one of those magically meaningless “Midway Best Of,” I feel like I’d be letting down our friends if we didn’t do our wrap-up of the goods from last week. Honestly, and I won’t throw out names, but there are some jams that would certainly make my best of the year list…one in particular. Can you guess it? Also, some of the new stuff by Love, Burns and Normil Hawaiians isn’t streaming, so I linked you to some of their other work you might enjoy. Mostly, it’s Monday, and I like to make this playlist for my friend Marc, so he doesn’t have to read anything and just gets music. Happy Monday folks!

Upset the Rhythm Announces Normil Hawaiians: Dark World

One of our favorite labels Upset the Rhythm has been working diligently to make sure that the world doesn’t forget the work of Normil Hawaiians; today they announce Dark World. In this collection you’ll get to hear the band in the years 1979-1981, working at breakneck pace trying to find their sound; you’ll get two 7″ worth of tunes , the Gala Failed EP, and a few Peel Sessions to flesh out the collection. The title track for the collection, “Dark World,” seems to encompass the whole of the band’s period here, opening up sharp and jagged, drums pacing back and forth with a stomp, all the while you’ve got Guy screaming and bellowing, anxious at times, satiated at others. Such a productive period, and now we get to reap the rewards. Dark World is out on September 24th; Grab it HERE.

Bobsled Team Share Can You Stay

It’s Friday release day, and one of those albums that drops is The Colours Blur from Belfast duo Bobsled Team. Listening through, you get the sense that the band have definitely been stepping in line with the recent dream pop vibes sweeping the indiesphere. But, what I like in their craft is the way they kind of add this new old level, something they ascribe to Sonic Youth, but to me feels like Broken Social Scene. There’s this joyous vibrancy that combines melody and wildness, particularly when you get to this song’s chorus. It’s definitely a sound that has me ready to spend this rainy morning listening to The Colours Blur on repeat.

Central Heat Exchange Share Directly Down

The pandemic collective that created Central Heat Exchange is certainly offering up some rewarding sounds, with the latest single just dropping, aided by vocals from Stephanie Smith of Varsity this go round. This round has the band focusing on the hypnotic nature of their craft, building these textural layers that allow Smith’s voice to sort of swirl about in your headspace. Personally, there’s these little moments where the careful quiet switches to a more emphatic wash of noise, though you almost don’t even notice you’re caught up in it, which is a wonderful way to get lost in song. The band’s debut LP will be out September 10th courtesy of Sunroom/Citrus City/Beirthday Cake.

Beach Vacation Share Moving On

Of all the beach associated acts, I feel like Beach Vacation has the brand down. Their latest single opens with this pulsing groove, like the rush from the car to the first splash in the ocean waves, running as fast as you can to hit that water; it keeps the song progressing, adding the pace where its needed. Taking on the vocals, you get that cool wash of mist smashing against the rocks, coating those nearby in this damp cool. Plus, if you wanted to score someone skating along the beach boardwalk, I couldn’t think of a better tune to hit the spot. This tune available courtesy of Z Tapes.

Another Hit From Nightwatchers

French based rockers Nightwatchers have really tuned my ear into their brand of punk rock with tons of melodic and poppy undertones. They released a stellar debut album entitled La Paix Ou Le Sable in 2019 and have already shared the impressive track “1905 & The Muslim Exception” earlier this summer. Today I am pumped to be one of the first to share with you the latest Nightwatchers single, “White Fathers”. Once again featuring some gnarly, almost growling vocals and an incredibly catchy rhythm, you really should be listening to this band if you are not currently. Start today and see what all my hype is about.

Nightwatchers will release this track as part of a new album entitled Common Crusades due out October 8th on Lovely Records.

Motorists Announce Surrounded

If Bobo Integral announces a new record, you better believe I’m going to rush over to give it a listen, which is why Motorists are my new favorite band! The Canadian outfit just signed up to release their debut Surrounded LP with the label, and it’s the perfect blast of power-pop for your Thursday. In the press release you get mentions like The Nerves and the Soft Boys, but if you wanted an update list, think of a cleaner version of your favorite garage band; it kind of sounds like Deadbeat Beat with a little bit more anthemic vibes coursing through it. You can already tell there will be hooks galore filling up this listen, so don’t skip out! The release is out September 3rd, as a co-release between Bobo Integral/Debt Offensive/We Are Time.

Cold Beat Announce War Garden

Always been a big Hannah Lew fan, particularly when it comes to her work with Cold Beat. Yesterday, word hit the streets that the band would be releasing a new LP, War Garden, and why not throw our hat into the ring with this tune. I love how the musical element has progressed; the synth work still allows for there to be that sort of sterility, that “cold” beat if you will. But, on this, there’s some incredible melody moving beneath, like an undercurrent of nostalgia rippling through the band’s craft. Plus, as is usually the case with Lew, you get a really visually stunning video accompaniment, this one directed by Mimi Pfahler. War Garden is out on September 17th via Like Ltd.

The Smittens Share New EP

If you’re in need of your early morning pop dosage, well, be sure to check out the latest Wanna Go Dancin (So Far Away) EP from Vermont’s The Smittens. The EP opens with a brand new tune commissioned by Burlington City Arts for their Bubblegum Pop Exhibition; the tune’s got tons of vocal layering to craft an undeniable hook that will have you clapping your hands spiritedly. “Year of Happiness” is a lost tune that was recorded during the band’s 2014 sessions for Love Record Breaker, but somehow didn’t make the cut. There’s a few remixes too, and another unheard tune from the band’s early days, and in the end, all the tunes are going to get your day going right. So start here. Courtesy of Fika Recordings.

Introducing: Lonely Guest

As a part of the newly reformed and relaunched label False Idols, UK founder/rapper/producer Tricky has a new group called Lonely Guest to celebrate the event. Though you won’t know the band name, you’ll certainly recognize the voices of Idles front man Joe Talbot and frequent Tricky collaborator Marta on the groups debut single “Pre War Tension” found below. It’s a dark, slinky little number which focuses on the commanding presence of vocals from Talbot, Marta and even Tricky himself. After a few listens, you’ll definitely want to know what’s next from the label and if this is a precursor to further collabs.
