Stream New EP From Low Horizon

Houston based outfit Low Horizon came onto my radar a couple of years ago and I’ve been eagerly awaiting new music from the band ever since. Well now the trio are back with not just one, but three new tunes on a brand new EP of material entitled Two Days. The EP highlights the bands sort of old school, garage rock meets indie sound similar to bands like Sleater-Kinney or Built to Spill. I’ve been lucky enough to share the stream for you fans, and if you dig it, consider throwing them a few dollars over on bandcamp for a download. Viva la Texas!

Smoke Bellow Announce Open For Business

It seems like the year’s been packed full of acts brandishing their own interpretation of what indie rock is/was, so you’ve got to look to your favorite labels to see where its going, like with the latest from Trouble in Mind. Today the label announces the release of a new LP from Smoke Bellow, and while pieces of the sound collage are definitely familiar, the presentation feels fairly unique, albeit one in line with current trends. It’s almost what one would call no-punk or no-pop; it’s got that sort of arty presentation, with stabbing guitar lines, rhythmic pulse and a kind of off-beat nature about it…sort of reminds me of one of my ATX faves, Deep Time. Don’t be confused, there’s still delectable pop bits in here, just tossed out in a fashion that’s not as easy to consume, but ultimately as rewarding. Open for Business drops on September 17th.

The Golden Dregs Share John Video

I guess we’ll be spending a good deal of today jamming out to some of my favorite songwriters, like Benjamin Woods, who helms the Golden Dregs. Seriously, just take one listen to this track and tell me that throaty baritone doesn’t just sink deep into your soul; Hazelwood and Merritt have been mentioned as comparisons, but I’m just going to settle for being blown away. I love the subtleties of Benjamin’s craft, the little details that often get overlooked. For sentence, just listen to the way his voice falls at the line “seldom do I think about him now,” matching perfectly the rise and fall of the guitar work. Plus, as the song continues, you get these added little flourishes highlighting all the finer details of the artistry in every track from The Golden Dregs. This track appears courtesy of End of the Road Records who will release it via 7″ in September.

Ducks Ltd. Announce Modern Fiction

After much success with their ATH approved Get Bleak EP, Ducks Ltd. found themselves a new home on Carpark Records, and now they’ve got a brand new record on the horizon. Our first listen has them channeling all things Aussie pop (despite haling from Toronto), with those quickly jangling strums dissected by a more angular guitar; the song runs at full speed instantly, pushing the pace and the melody from the get-go. I love how both sides of the vocals seem to have this wanderlust to them, from the indifference style on the verses to the more exuberant feel of the chorus; they always feel like we’re out there searching for joy together. If you didn’t listen to me with Get Bleak, then perhaps Modern Fiction is the one that will convince you of this band’s greatness; it drops on October 1st!

Quitt Share Partys Single

Admittedly, I’m not entirely sure what the lyrical content (it’s in German!) of the latest tune from Quitt is, but I’ve really enjoyed the band’s sound, and sometimes that’s all you really need, right? They’ve got this sound that’s part Discord/part Obits; I think if they upped the pace and let things go, it’d be all over that Obits/Hot Snakes territory. Sharp edges, propulsive rhythm and that scratchy bit of vocals barking from the stage all make for the perfect sound, at least if you’re asking this fella here. You can find this track on the German band’s new Dumm und Extrovertiert EP!

Love, Burns Shares New Tunes

I have it on good authority that Love, Burns, the solo project of Phil Sutton (Pale Lights) has a full length ready to go. But, in the meantime, he’s teasing his fans with three non-album tunes, and personally, if these are the non-LP tunes, can you imagine how great a record this will be? “She Will Leave, Unless,” feels like a lesson on the bygone days of pop, that innocent sunshine in the window as you make breakfast to set off on your day, starring softened jangles. “Say What You Mean” seeps in with a little more swagger, sort of that late 60s almost pscyh where the whole band is wearing cliche black sunglasses, but with better songwriting. Still, the 3 new songs don’t peak, for me, until you get to “The Push and Pull of the Great Outdoors.” I love how stark and naked the tune feels, mostly Phil and guitar until a bit of tambourine shimmies near the 2 minute mark. Man, you better love eat this up pop fans!

Pleased To Meet You: Tears to Go

In a way, I hope you’ve all met Tears to Go, though the project is brand new. It’s the solo work of Elena Sestelo, who was once part of When Nelda Became Punk (Shelflife); she’s just announced Patronizing Self-Help, the debut album. Our first listen gives us the title track, with Elena’s voice taking on a slightly dreamy brand, with the musical element leaving lots of space for the song to swell. Used to Sestelo’s immediacy from her previous work, I found myself pleasantly surprised with how carefully this song unfolds; the piano notes are hit with purpose, like an emphatic stomp on our souls, as angelic backing vocals are layered to create this otherworldly experience. If you dig what you’re hearing, then you’re going to want to check back in the Fall when the debut is released courtesy of I Need Some Company Records.

Gary Share Blur the Difference

Gary is a recording project among friends Gary Spolarich and Jason Gerycz (of Cloud Nothings fame); the two have been jamming for some time in various forms, and this year we’ll be treated to Ideas Riding, which is finally seeing the light of day. For starters, the song’s a definite ripper, with Gary offering just enough sweetness in his vocals to really kick in that hook. For Jason’s part, well, he’s doing what he’s always done, bang away on the drums harder than any of your friends; it honestly gives this song the feel of what early Cloud Nothings created, poppy and rambunctious. All of Ideas Riding is streaming now courtesy of Old Flame Records.

John Roseboro Releases MFL Video

John Roseboro‘s spent much of this year prepping us for the release of his debut album, and for those not in the know, “MFL” is a great little introduction to John’s work. For me, the narrative of making mistakes and forgiveness is something relatable for all folks, or so I hope; it’s made all the more accessible by the narrative nature of John’s songwriting here. The song takes a light bossa nova feel, using sharp little guitar notes combined with wonderful horn arrangements to give the song some added depth. It’s the sort of relaxed summer vibe we all enjoy, so sit back and just wait for John’s debut to hit later this year!

Icarus Phoenix Shares All the Same

Ya’ll all know by now how much I love Drew Daburry’s project, Icarus Phoenix; it’s one of those little secret I keep hoping you all are willing to dip your toes into as you browse our site. When this song opens, you get the traditional Danburry feel, an emotional vocal plain and upfront in the mix. But, what really charmed me on this track was the song’s elevated punch. It hits for the first time just before the 40 second mark, drums dropping in and guitars giving off a little more bravado. Honestly, it reminds me of the best of Jason Lytle, blending a more modern power pop feel with folk inclinations. This tune will appear on the seance Icarus Phoenix release, slated for later this Fall.
