SUUNS Share Clarity Single

I’ll come out and say that today I’m approaching life with a little bit of trepidation and anxiety, so I kind of need something that moves me in and out of consciousness, both visually and audibly, which is why this new SUUNS tune is perfect. Visually, well, you can see the color pink moving in and out of the tune; it seems like an eye, looking in or out on the world. Musically, this tune’s really stripped back, with this light beat being manipulated to match up with the vocals, while some other synthetic (or is it or horns or both!) notes surf in and out of the background to build in some texture for you. If you’re willing to let your mind drift, I can’t imagine a better way than this; this single appears on the band’s new record, The Witness, out September 3rd via Joyful Noise.

The Shivas Drop Another Hit

Just about a month ago, our Portland based friends in The Shivas announced the release of their new album Feels So Good // Feels So Bad coming on September 24th via Tender Loving Empire. After releasing new tune “If I Could Choose” in July, I am now quite excited to share this new single called “Undone”. If you aren’t listening to these new singles and growing anticipation for this new album, you are truly missing out on one of the best forthcoming albums of the year. We love this band.

The Smallgoods Schedule Lost in the Woods

It’s been a long time coming, but we finally have a released date for the long-awaited new LP from The Smallgoods. Having mostly been quiet, at least as a collective unit, for the last 14 years or so, the band wanted to pick up where they left off with 2007’s Down on the Farm. According to Gus Franklin, the idea then and now was to rail against the staleness of the musical climate, crafting huge bold pop music with just a little quirks; they even went so far as to reference the Muppets. Here, you get that blast of pop, with layers of vocals and bounce thrown on top of extra layers of pop; it’s like building a fort out of pop blankets where you can hide out with all your friends. The band are set to release Lost in the Woods on September 24th via Lost and Lonesome.

She/Beast Announces Debut Album

There’s a certain timelessness to the 60s girl group sounds; even when used as kitsch, it’s still utterly charming. So, it should only be fitting that She/Beast, the project of Katja Nielsen, draws from that period for musical inspiration as she moves to announce Violent Tendencies. Our first listen definitely has that sort of swinging with your partner vibe, cheek to cheek on the dance floor as tin-covered stars hang loosely from the ceiling. Still, what makes Nielsen’s approach a bit more unique is that she’s still got that penchant for punk aesthetics remaining; it’s the attitude left over from her role in Arre! Arre!. Stoked to hear how this all shapes up in the long run; the LP is out via PNKSLM on October 22nd.

Joyer Share Cranky Boy Video

Perhaps you’ve been listening to a lot of Hovvdy the last few years. Maybe you even like the old Jade Tree catalog. Lucky for you, there’s this new tune from Joyer, which to me reminds me a lot of a mix between the two. It’s got that sort of Owls vocal to it, which is where I pulled the JT reference, but it very much feels like that slowcore emo, the sort where emotion is pulled from stretching notes of the guitar around slow-fashioned drum work. That pacing allows for the band’s cinematic nature to come to light, which is perhaps due to the fact that the Sullivan brothers both studied film in school; it’s one of the key influences on their album, Perfect Gray, which is out September 24th via Julia’s War.

As of late, a lot of the music that comes across the desk has been fairly similar. I don’t dislike it per se, but I’m just maybe worn out by the lack of differentiation. Of course, then there’s this Phone Voice tune, which shares some similarities in its construction and verses. But, I’m a fan of sparkling moments, and the chorus in this song has a tonal change that absolutely captivated me, so much so that I just keep playing the track on repeat; there’s a familiarity to it that keeps encouraging me to press repeat. It’s a good little jam, and one that might encourage you to look towards the Cradle Tape for more like-minded joyous moments.

Brother Sports Share Won’t See You Again

Having released their iii EP at the tail-end of December, Austin’s Brother Sports return with a surprisingly uplifting song about dealing with grief. Opening with this sort of ghostly surf feel, it quickly jumps right into this Strokes meets Growlers garage rocker, tapping your toes all along the way. In contrast to the joyous feel, the song’s lyrics deal with how sometimes you just never get over grief, and I guess sometimes it just grows with you. I think for me, with that message and the music, you just have to take it in stride, realize we’re only here a short time, and carry that grief like you would carry joy, just as a piece of the puzzle that makes up your being. Or, of course, you can just enjoy a good pop rock number as it is!

Chapter Music Sign Teether & Kuya Neil

You’d be forgiven for having expectations when it comes to a Chapter Music release/signing; I’m probably even guilty on my end of promoting a certain sound from the label. But, if you look into the label’s discography, as well as their online tastes, you’re going to see a really diverse sound, which no doubt influenced their latest signing Teether & Kuya Neil. Today the label announced they’d signed up with the band to work with them on the follow up to their acclaimed God of Surprises EP. The duo’s sound combines the lyrical flows of rapper Teether with Neil’s darkened dance beats, leaving you with this eclectic sound that’s hard to pigeonhole. Is it rap? Is it down tempo electro? Well, I’m not sure, but its good, and thus, warrants your enjoyment.

Astrid Swan Announces D/Other

Award winning artist Astrid Swan has already established herself as one of the strongest songwriters in Finland, but with her new album, D/Other, she wraps up a study on being a mother…from the perspective of both daughter and mother. The latest single’s a bright pop song, using these light little piano bits and steady drumming to give the song a bit of bounce. I really love the chorus here, with the perfect vocal accompaniment helping raise the melodic. This song’s got a very traditional pop structure, which leads us to believe that the whole of the album will be filled with more charm than we can handle, not to mention that it will include string work/arrangements from the heralded Owen Pallet. Look for D/Other on October 8th via Soliti.

Flowertown Announce Time Trials

You might remember our little Rock N’ Recipes with Karina and Mike of Flowertown, but if not, you need to immediately spend your money on buying the new album from the duo. It’s weird that they announced Time Trials on the same day as the latest Damon and Naomi dropped, as it definitely feels like there’s this lineage with Galaxie 500, or maybe that’s just wishful thinking on my part. The title track is just ridiculous; it’s too good for you to not listen to it, so you now have a bit of time to rectify that. Then there’s this ghostly haunt for “The Way Back,” like the tune you might here being sung to you by the friendly ghosts of the nearest haunted orphanage. I don’t wanna be the dude that’s like “yo, if your’e not listening to this you’re uncool!” So don’t be like uncool man, go grab the record from Paisley Shirt Records; its out on August 20th!
