SXSW Interviews: The Lathums
Well, we had a few more interviews roll in, and last night’s huge show at Cedar Street Courtyard was a reminder that Wet Leg wasn’t the only big name on the bill. The Lathums have been huge overseas and hit the midnight slot, and we wanted to make sure those not in attendance got to meet up with the band. They’ve got plans for music in 2022, but they’re being really secretive about it!
ATH: Whats the name of the band/group? Where are you from?
Lathums: We are The Lathums and Were from Wigan UK.
ATH: Describe your groups sound.
Lathums: Were a UK Indie rock band who have inspiration from the likes of the Smiths, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin and the Ramones.
ATH: What was your most recent release? Any planned releases for 2022?
Lathums: Our most recent release was a Christmas song called Krampus but we released out #1 debut album last year. We do have plans for 2022 releases but I cant say too much just yet.
ATH: Everyones been focused on the negative aspects of the last few years? What are a few good things that came about for you as an individual or the band as a whole during the last two pandemic-stricken years?
Lathums: We managed to get our debut album recorded during the covid period and we managed to gain a bigger following on social media so the band did well over the pandemic really.
ATH: Why play SXSW? Whats the draw for the band? What about this festival will bring you to Austin?
Lathums: SXSW is a bucket list festival for most bands so were looking forward to the whole experience and getting some real BBQ in Austin.
ATH: Lets say your band has booked an official showcase at a pop up venue somewhere in the middle of 6th street. The lineup features thrash metal, hip-hop, spoken word, and you. The sound is horrible, the lineup is not your style, and the crowd is growing antsy. How would your band deal with such a situation?
Lathums: We would take it all in our stride and play asif were playing to a full arena even if theres only 1 person listening we would play to that 1 person.
ATH: There are tons of bands coming into town, but if you could create your own perfect festival, who would you have playing? Would it have a sick name? Where would it take place?
Lathums: I think most of the bands wed want to see are gone now but I would call it Lathumland and it would be in the mountains.
ATH: What has everyone in the band been listening to, or, what plays in the tour van/car/bus?
Lathums: Anything goes in our van!
ATH: Theres been a lot of discussion about Spotify and streaming and all that these last few monthswhere does the band stand? Whats your solution?
Lathums: Were here to make music and make people happy we dont get involved with the politics of music.
ATH: The band gets to create their own food truck to take on the road. Whats it called, and what are you serving?
Lathums: It has to be pies doesnt it? Id call it the Buttered Barm.
