Say Sue Me Return with The Last Thing Left

It’s been a hot minute since we’ve gotten anything fresh from South Korea’s Say Sue Me, but today that all changes with the announcement of a brand new LP, the Last Thing Left. This first single comes with an incredible fun video, with characters utilizing imaginary objects throughout. As for the song, well its nothing short of sunny pop, something that hits all the right notes for a Spring hit. The band still employ catchy melodies, though I like how this tune seems to have a little more openness to it, letting the melody and the hook build in the ear of the listener. If this single’s anything to go by, and you look at Where We Were Together, we’re all in for a treat when The Last Thing Left drops on May 13th via Damnably.

Breakup Haircut Share Out of My Way

When the strumming of Breakup Haircut‘s latest single kicks off, the tune seems innocent enough, like another run-of-the-mill pop tune. But, suddenly, drums began to pound, banging hard like a furious animal ready to break free; it serves the song well, forcing the band into a riotous performance that’s fueled by the memorable refrain of “out of my way I’m not getting on the night bus.” It all ends up a furious affair, with lyricism that’ll make you laugh, singing along all the way to pick it up at your local record store. They pulled the video together in a rather ramshackle fashion, with nods to horror film lighting and various other music video, highlighting the bands preference for fun and quick turnarounds. If you’re in need of a proper pop punk hit, well, look for Punk Dancing for Self Defence this July via Reckless Yes!

Soliti Music Sign Team Play

Our Finnish friends at Soliti always uncover great gems; we’ve most recently fawned over bands like Pintandwefall…but, now we’ve got Team Play to be excited about. The duo is made up of friends Minja Koskela and Tapio Viitasaari, two dear friends who love writing songs about human existence. At times, this song’s stark nature creates this sort of elegance, a brand of folk that feels as fragile as it is moving. Both singers wrap their vocals atop one another, building this musical texture that provides stunning depth, enabling the project to take pop music to new heights. The label promises that there’s a new album planned for summer, but we’ll keep you informed as we hear more!

Simon Love’s Me and You Video

I’m nearing the end of my collection of emails, and there lurks Simon Love, the former Loves frontman, waiting to unleash Love, Sex and Death etc by sharing another video. This one’s all about has all the makings of classic pop, though with Simon you get a bit more bravado. I love the way he turns on a more emphatic vocal punch, right before the band seem to plug in and let loose behind him, building in a more textured pop rock sound that wouldn’t have been too far off from early Beulah recordings. So, if you like your pop with big boisterous bops, then grab the new LP from Tapete when it drops on April 8th.

Letting Up Despite Great Faults Share Self-Portrait Video

I’ve spent a lot of time the last few weeks enjoying IV, the latest long player from Austin’s Letting Up Despite Great Faults. Hopefully you’ve been passing your time in a similar fashion, and if not, then indulge me by watching this new lyric video for “Self-Portrait” in hopes that you see the error in your ways. Starting off with a light jangling guitar sets the mood, just before the rhythm section (which is always spot on) pushes the song into foot-stomping/hand-clapping territory. Mike Lee’s feathered voice softly caresses your inner ear as heavy riffs run beneath the surface, fighting to break through the band’s melodious nature helmed by Lee and Annah Fisette’s vocals. Plus, the band get bonus points here for the great video created by Pelvis Wrestley‘s Benjamin Violet…a kind and artistic human in their own right! Grab the LP right HERE.

Lovely New Tune From Flock Of Dimes

As I’m sure many of you know, Jenn Wasner is a long time favorite around the ATH offices with her years spent fronting Wye Oak and also in her side project Flock of Dimes. Her release last year, Head of Roses, was high on my list of top albums from 2021 and I’m sure some tracks snuck into DJ nights in the Spring. With such a stellar release, Wasner surely had a ton of material in the bank so it comes as no surprise to see her putting out an album of unreleased gems, bootlegs, and live recordings. Head of Roses: Phantom Limb will see a digital release on April 15th and features this stunning new track called “It Just Goes On”. Wasner’s voice is still one of the strongest and most enchanting in the music world today.

Listen to Spilling Yr Guts from Apollo Ghosts

Vancouver’s Apollo Ghosts are a band I’d definitely like you to get into, particularly as I myself just recently discovered the band and their new LP, Pink Tiger. Taking on the latest single, the band hit hard with this sound that’s reminiscent of Sonic Youth, using that snaking guitar line to set up the central melody for the vocals. That voice, takes on a more soothing tone, something that certainly wouldn’t have been out of place on a Pavement album. And you’re reading this, thinking its all nostalgia, but the execution and mixture of various 90s guitar sounds feels as fresh as a batch of daisies. Plus, they get bonus points for using “fuckall” as a lyric. Check out Pink Tiger today!

Icarus Phoenix Shares Too Many Hands Video

Going back through my emails this week, I’ve been sleeping on dropping this Icarus Phoenix video, which has been out for a hot minute. Still, I love Drew Danburry’s songwriting, particularly in this project, so it seems fitting as I’m circling back to include the latest tune from the forthcoming Sometimes Our Shadow Gets in the Way. This round, Drew is joined up by Josaleigh Pollett, who adds a nice balance to the song and helps detail the song’s story of a toxic relationship; she plays a nice foil with a more pensive tone in her voice, mixing up the textural balance in a traditional duet sense. This new LP will be out on Telos Tapes on April 7th.

New Jams from the Austin Scene

Feel like I neglected Austin last week, so wanted to make up for it by sharing a couple of the tunes that’ve been chilling for the last two weeks; we’ve got new tunes from Queen Serene and Gentleman Rogues.

Queen Serene began as Sarah Ronan’s new bedroom project, but as you can tell by the darkened post-punk sounds here, things have been fleshed out into a full on rock n’ roll hotbed. Love the way this tune goes back and forth between sort of slinky early 80s sounds and a driving guitar exploration that recalls acts like Television.

Gentleman Rogues have just teamed up with Snappy Little Numbers, and dammit if they didn’t go and try to one-up their label by creating the snappiest little pop rock tune. The track hits with a heavy mix that puts the guitars right up front. Perfect for all you pop rock fans, the new 7″ drops on April 1st.

Kisskadee Shares Brother Video

Currently playing this new Kisskadee track on repeat. There’s something magical about the looped piano line and underlying string/woodwind pieces that provide the track with a nice little background to match the synced up beat. I’m loving how Kasie Shahbaz has built texture after texture behind her, though her vocal performance is also quite a marvel, at least in this song’s presentation. At times its calming and then out of nowhere it gets looped into soaring heights, rising in your ear as striking cacophony encircles the listener’s ears. “Brother” is just one of the various stages of life that we get to witness on Black Hole Era, as Shahbaz takes on the cycle from childhood discover to adult loneliness; the album drops on May 6th via Anxiety Blanket Records.
