Gregory Uhlmann Shares Again and Again

Something in this season is really bringing me into more drawn out sounds, thus I’m enjoy the piece that Gregory Uhlmann has just released. His musicianship should come as no surprise, as he’s already been on the road working with Hand Habits and Perfume Genius…but he’s taking notes from Cate le Bon and Low on this tune. The tune, like the title, has this cyclical nature to it; it works slowly, almost dragging you along in the first vocal verse. Then, as if a switch was flicked on, the tune begins a more forceful jaunt, one that feels more like spinning you about on some magical tilt-a-whirl, just hinting at the study of pop. And yet, it spins back again, back to the plodding before jumping right back towards the twirl, “again and again.” If you enjoy what you hear, it’s the title track to Gregory’s new album, Again and Again, out on April 28th via Northern Spy Records.

Conflict at Serenity Pools Shares Golden View

If you missed last year’s Type A/Type B album, might I suggest you go back there to introduce yourself to Conflict at Serenity Pools. Today we’ve got a fresh single from the LA artist, which maybe hints at a new release later this year. There’s something in the construction that reminds me of a mixture Radio Dept, albeit spun through a sort of heavier guitar sound; the construction and textural layering is really similar, but you’ll love how the guitars get ramped up here and drive right through your speakers with a solid punch. Give it a listen, and thank us later!

Single Premiere: Slow Fiction Share Jericho

Brooklyn based outfit Slow Fiction stirred up a lot of buzz last year with a slew of singles released after forming at the start of 2021. What originally caught my attention was the absolutely superb rhythm section with badass drum work from Ryan Duffin. After that initial ear grabber, the band can offer a ton to like with repeat listens – restrained, yet a subtle hint of anger in the vocals, expert garage rock guitars, and an overall tightness and poppiness usually only seen in bands with many more years together. I think you’ll find this new single “Jericho” as a prime example of what the group has to offer. It’s part of the debut EP from Slow Fiction which hits the street tomorrow on all platforms.

Blues Lawyer Drop Make Up Video

I immediately fell in love with the pounding rhythm of the latest Blues Lawyer hit, set as the background against this perfect crystalline pop vocal. Once it hooked me, it didn’t let go, adding in a little bit of extra sweetness by tossing in these dual vocal harmonies as the guitars go jangle in an almost 80s cinematic fashion. It’s a whole lot of fun, played best at high volumes, and they top it off with a nice little homage to Monty Python for the visual accompaniment. If you’re not listening to Blues Lawyer, you’re not doing it right; their new LP All in Good Time is out on Friday via Dark Entries.

Alfie Firmin Announces Absentee

You can always rely upon the work of Bobo Integral, so when they announced Alfie Firmin‘s new album yesterday, I went back to check in on those sounds. Honestly, they’re a pleasant bit of pop songwriting, almost so relaxed it already has my eyes set on the summer time. The guitars are strummed lightly, plucked with enough energy to give the song a sweet bounce that has you softly tapping those toes. Firmin’s voice is crisp and velvety, but it gets a nice little boost from the great horn arrangements added to the track to provide a bit more depth. Looking forward to hearing Absentee in its whole; it drops on may 12th.

Bingo Boys Drop Donuts

Seeing as its the middle of the week, figured we needed a good kick in the rear to get us underway, and what better way than this fresh track from Indianapolis outfit, Bingo Boys. Greeted with a wall of feedback, the band burst right forth delivering this pummeling barrage of hurried punk; the guitars alone feel like they’re angry engines rushing down the highway, ripping through your speakers as they go. Just as quickly as you dive into this tune, it draws to a close. But, then we’re left here to wait for their new album, Freak Out and Leave, dropping later this year.

Island of Love Announce Debut LP

I’m new to the Island of Love train, but judging by their recent signing to Third Man London, I have a feeling, we’re all about ready to get a whole lot more from the group. Personally, I love that there’s this nostalgic alt-rock vibe to it, somewhere with some lineage to acts like Teenage Fanclub, though I can hear faint bits of math-ier rock going on in this. Plus, there’s furious riffs soloing too, which surely caught the attention of those associated with Jack White’s label. The single’s latter half is all about flexing those musical muscles, so I think you’ll be super impressed with the musicianship and in love with the hooks! Their debut self-titled LP comes out on May 12th.

ATH Interview: Free Range

As we closed out the year and wrapped coverage in December, one artist hit me with several memorable songs and left a lasting impression going into 2023. Chicago based Sofia Jensen, and her recording project Free Range, really struck a chord with me and will likely be a top new artist to push in the coming year. After three incredible singles to serve as an introduction to the project, Sofia is releasing a full, debut LP this week entitled Practice and I am here to push this gem of a record however I can. I was fortunate enough to send along a few questions to Free Range and I’m pumped to share this intimate look into Sofia’s process and musical tastes. Full interview with some song links and LP streaming/buying options after the jump.

Lunar Vacation Share Only You Video

Having received great reviews with the release of Inside Every Fig is a Dead Wasp back in late 2021, Lunar Vacation have been on a bit of a high. They’ve released demos, recorded an Audiotree session, plus spun their view on some Christmas classics. But, today the band has a brand new single for you to taste, accompanied by a video shot in rural Tennessee. Once the song gets going, just beyond the 1 minute mark, you’re immediately greeted by Grace’s soothing voice over a soft percussive roll and gentle acoustic strum. It actually feels as if you’re walking side by side with the character in the video, traipsing about in those Tennessee foothills, perhaps with a little wind at your back. In the end, I got super stuck on the expansive nature; there’s this natural openness to the Atlanta group’s songwriting here that just immediately brings you on a journey. The tune is brought to you courtesy of Keeled Scales.

Swim Camp Share Two New Singles

In precisely ten days, Swim Camp will release Steel Country, and with that, there are two brand new singles to stream today that should catch your ear. For me, the songs really do carry the true identity of bedroom pop; they have such an emotional draw to them that you can’t help but put yourself laying on the floor of your best friends house as they shared their latest composition. But, what I love is the obscuring of the edges, building in added textural layers, or noise (as in the case of “Apple”) that really switch your expectations of what the genre entails. It’s like a musical anxiety blanket for the folks that continue to search for their spot in the world. Steel Country drops on February 24th via Julia’s War Recordings.
