Emma Anderson Delivers Fresh Single, The Presence

Having covered the majority of the singles from Emma Anderson‘s forthcoming solo record, I totally had my own expectations when hitting play on the new single, but admittedly, I got spun around. Within seconds, keys tease you into a quick drop that delivers a sharp toe-tapping bit of guitar work; you can hear the faint build of lush atmosphere behind Anderson’s voice, but for the most part, everything here feels snappy and fresh. This is precisely the way one moves forward into their own territory, leaving breadcrumbs to Lush, but making a sound that feels vibrant and joyous on its own terms. Real excited to hear all of Pearlies when it drops this Friday via Sonic Cathedral.

Stream A Bad Dream in a Raging Sea

The last several years, the mysterious Waves of Dread have teased us with single after single, walking that line between dream pop and shoegaze, consistently creating these tunes that wash over us with emotion. And now, we’ve finally got the debut LP from the group, fulfilling all the promise they’ve left us with through the years. Just take a listen to the opening tune; it opens with this trickling bit of pop, careful not to show its cards…and then it drops in and hits you with a wave of dread (see what I did there!). Throughout the entirety of A Bad Dream in a Raging Sea, you’re confronted with your own tastes and opinions…would you like them to sink into the melody or would you like them to step on the pedals? Either way, we all win; stream the LP below!

Melody Fields Shares Jesus Single

If you were looking to get into the latest cool Swedish outfit, might I suggest you try on some Melody Fields. This weekend they sent us a reminder that their latest track also came with the release of their 1901 LP. For me, this track’s sort of in that weird psychedelic territory where it’s not quite Spaceman 3 but also not quite Brian Jonestown; there’s certainly a heaviness pervading, albeit with these swelling vocal melodies popping in and out in all the right places. Ride thids tune right into the purchase of their new LP; it’s available now!

Last Week’s Jams (10.9 – 10.13)

We’re getting to that point when everyone is scrambling to find their favorite tracks, find their favorite collection of songs to put into those fruitful lists that you’ll all look at, then claim to hate! We do it too! Still, covered a bunch of great new music last week. There were great new tunes from Red Pants and Teenage Tom Petties, plus we got to celebrate a really busy release week with stuff from Lightheaded and Upchuck, among others. Our friend Jared Leibowich had a new tune up, but it didn’t make it onto the DPSs yet, so be sure to circle back and check on that one. There’s a couple of long-burns too, from Native Cats, a Beacon School and the Uptights, all worthy of some deep listening. Stream on!

Friday Album Streams: Lightheaded, Blue Ocean, Mope City and More

There’s only a few more sleeps until all the music folks decided to hibernate for the year, so better be sure to listen to as much new music as possible, right? Well, on this Friday, we’ve got a couple of really delicious records for you to devour, if that’s your thing. No need to wax poetic here, just links so you can fall in love and spend some quality time with your new favorite LP.

Tar Of Drop Ey Vayy Single

Feel like I needed something working more towards left-field, so I have been gravitating towards this new single from Tar Of from Brooklyn. I’m tempted here to refer to it as an instrumental piece, although there’s clearly a vocal soundtrack that is the driving force here; it kicks off just before the 30 second mark, pushing the track into this frantic territory. Throughout the track, horns honk in and out, accenting the negative space that works behind that central groove. If you’ve not heard the group, check out their other singles from the forthcoming Confidence Freaks Me Out; its been a definite treat on my end. The LP is out via Sound as Language on October 27th.

Chad Vangaalen Shares Earth People, Drops Split EP w/ Astral Swans

In what I hope is a nice little ode to the Dr. Octagon, Chad Vangaalen shares a new single from his Split EP with Astral Swans. If you’ve been following Chad over the years, this track sparkles with is trademark ability to blend folk and electronics in a manner that still feels refreshing and new, as opposed to some bit of cliche indie rock. There’s these ghostly chorus moments that rise into an eruptive punch, then things subside as the song seems to be breaking down on itself…but it doesn’t. Instead, it continues to push forward, moving and bubbling, like a weird combination of Elf Power meets Flaming Lips. Full EP is out today!!

Red Pants Share On a Wire

I can’t tell you how much I’m looking forward to the new album from Red Pants; Not Quite There Yet seems like the perfect record to wrap up my year end list. For me, the record operates in between the lines of really incredible melody, with hints of fragility, like on this latest single’s vocals. And, while that closeness seeps through your speakers, there’s still a bit of a heavy edge to the playing, providing all you old punks with the ability to grasp the straws of cool. Plus, the DIY aesthetic from Lambeth and Nekola carries such sincerity in all aspects (music, videos, artwork) that it’s definitely refreshing in a time when we throw that word around too often (myself included!). Not Quite There Yet is out on October 27th via Meritorio, and it’s going to rule!

The Uptights Share Tor Aukrust

You’re just waking up to today; you’re a bit weary as you rub those little flecks of sleep from the corners of your eyes. On the stereo, you hear this beautifully solemn song from the Uptights, something that makes you aligns with your exact state. The song rolls, tosses and turns slowly, like you, arising from your slumber. There’s this cavernous depth, like the fog cruising through your mind before you’ve showered and had that first cup of coffee. Something about this just feels like a musical awakening, and we’re all the better knowing that someone’s put music to our every day routine. The Norwegian outfit will release I Was Dreaming on October 27th.

ACL 2023 WE2 PREVIEW

What weekend of ACL is it, Karen? Ok, thanks!

Weekend Two of ACL Music Festival 2023 promises to keep some trends from Weekend One alive. First of all, the weather gets an encore. It will be a bit warm on Friday, nothing too bad. A cold front will land and we’ll be in for Chamber of Commerce weather on Saturday and Sunday; it is going to be nice enough to break out the DON’T MOVE HERE shirts. Let’s get to some WE2 updates and little gallery from last weekend where I was on stage for a song thanks to my close personal friend Jared Leto. The sad news is losing out on artists like The Mars Volta and The Walkmen. The main draw for WE2 from my perspective is M83.
