Latest Track from Bedbug

There’s something magical that seems to come through my speakers when I play a Bedbug track; it feels a bit like late 90s indie rock, when folks captured their imperfections without fear, hoping just to pour their emotions into the musical side of things. I completely get those feels on this new single too, as it feels like the vocals get pushed to the edge of control, but when the song pulls back to its more personal moments, you begin to think that it was just the pure excitement of the songwriting getting carried away. Pack Your Bags the Sun is Growing really is starting to feel like something special. Grab a copy from Disposable America before it drops on March 15th.

Variety Share The Light + Play the ATH vs SOTO Party

Last week we announced our annual SXSW Party with our friends over at Side One Track One, and one of the acts we wanted to be sure was on the show was new act Variety. They’ve just released a fresh track, with a nice little hint at their sound, and what we can expect from future singles. Although brief, there’s a frantic nature in the guitar work, trying to maneuver with as much movement as possible within the song’s time frame. The vocals seem to work in the opposite direction, keeping you off kilter a little bit as you try to keep up with the furious drumming…which I can attest is phenomenal in the live setting. Give it a whirl will ya.

Daniel Romano’s Outfit Share Where’s Paradise

Rock n’ roll probably doesn’t need to be saved at this point, but if there was someone that I’d back to kind of destroy the modern mediocrity, I’d place my bets on Daniel Romano. If you dive into the surface level of the band’s newest single, you’ve got this old-school power-pop vibe that’s filled with hooks and a shit ton of fun. I’m totally on board, but get underneath and you find this rocking bit of heavy psychedelia grooving in the leftover space. They ride out the close of the song with this smashing riot that reminds us all that you don’t need gizzards or wizards to be cool; you just need Daniel Romano’s Outfit. They release Too Hot to Sleep on March 1st via You’ve Changed Records.

New Tune From Hot Joy

Today has been an absolute wild one for new music with a ton of heavy hitters in the indie world dropping new music. While we let some of the big boys post those well known names, we’ll try to highlight more of an up and comer with this new song “Fingers on my Side” from St. Louis based outfit Hot Joy. As a sucker for mid to late 90s alt-rock with a slacker theme (think Weezer, Pavement, etc.), this one was an immediate hit for me. Wonderful tune from a band you are sure to be hearing more about soon.

This track is part of Hot Joy’s debut EP entitled Small Favor which is due out on April 19th.

Dumb Things Share Instant Coffee Single

I fell in love with Brisbane’s Dumb Things late last year when I caught wind of “Self Help,” and they seem to have aimed to keep things going with their newest single, “Instant Coffee.” When I heard the chime of the guitars, particularly the understated jangle beneath the mix, I’ll be honest, I immediately thought of fellow Oceanic popsters Spice World. This go round, they give the reins on lead vocals over to Madeleine who knocks it out of the park; even when accompanied by her male counterparts, her voice seems settled and fearless, adding this bravado to our favorite genre of indiepop. Be sure to stick around as the band let loose to close the number out; I hope there’s more just around the corner!

R.E. Seraphin Preps Fool’s Mate + Shares Bound

Think we’ve got 2 degrees of separation from R.E. Seraphin, but that’s neither here nor there, as we’ve got a fresh LP and a new track that immediately require your attention. A light little jangle and a wash of atmosphere opens things up, with the song taking a propulsive bass line under its wings as they push towards a meet and greet with the melodic center force. Seraphin’s vocals have a really nice warm jacket atop, perhaps with a nod to the album’s producer Jason Quever (Papercuts)…and whatever, it’s a really nice move that really takes Ray’s songwriting to the next level. Fool’s Mate is the new album, dropping on March 22nd via Take a Turn Records and Safe Suburban Home Records.

ATH Premiere: 40th Parallel Share Cleaner Air Better World

When this new track from 40th Parallel popped in my box, I was really intrigued; there were bits of this style, little flurries of that brand…and yet when woven together, it sort of took on a life of its own. Opening up, the guitar line weaves its own tapestry, with light cymbals and a wash of keys, but then it opens up, teasing with a bombastic pop bounce that unfolds with snippets of jazz saxophone, leaving you with careful guitar pop that was born and raised in a smoky nightclub. And that’s only the first phase, as the vocals soon enter, yet even when they’re present, they feel a bit distant to a degree, pulling on the emotional vibe of the listener. Pushing on, the vocals burst, creating a traditional chorus feel that adds a dreamier realm just as the jazzier moments squeeze back into the picture. It’s a distinctive piece that has songwriter Jeremy Staude building his own musical brand!

Last Week’s Jams (2.12 – 2.16)

Sorry for taking off yesterday, but we’ll be honest, this site’s run by folks in the education field, so when we’re granted a rare day off mid-semester, you better believe we’re hanging with our families! But, here I am with hopefully a link to last week to set you up for this week. We covered perhaps too much music last week, getting 28 songs on the mark, and I was super stoked to hear that both Parsnip and Mammoth Penguins were back in business…with new albums heading our way. Plus, Kindsight gave us another sparkling single from their forthcoming LP via Rama Lama Records. I’m in on new Bolis Pupul, so we’ve got that, plus Unwed Sailor have a new release…there is maybe too much new stuff out there! Just take a listen!

Friday Album Streams: The BVs, The Infinites + More

It’s Friday, and the release schedule has picked up around these parts, and a couple of my favorite artists are dropping new LPs today. It’s definitely not an end-all-be-all list, but just wanted to give you something worth jamming to all day long. No need to get long-winded here, just offering advice for Friday.

Two long running music sites based in Austin unite again at this year’s SXSW to kick off the week of shows over at Hotel Vegas. You guessed it! It’s us (ATH) vs Side One Track One! This is our annual event, where we try to reach as deep into the Austin scene as we can to bring folks visiting, as well as our locals, a really great show that spreads across the scene. You can check out more details over at our Facebook Event HERE.

Here’s a great playlist of the newest music from all the bands (save for a couple that are so new they don’t even have hits out in the world yet!):
