Meet the SXSW Band: Corridor

We’re in the throes of “SXSW,” and I know, that’s a hard pill for folks to swallow. But, some bands were unable to back out in protest, so we’re here to point you towards one of those acts, Corridor, who recently have signed up with Sub Pop for their new LP, Mimi. Get to know the band below, and if you’re in Austin, they play at the Music for Listeners party today!

ATH: Whats the name of the band/group? Where are you from?

Corridor (Montreal, Canada)

ATH: Give us a short pitch for your band, describing sound, ambiance or whatever you feel like.

Someone recently said “cool sound, like if the 2011-era AnCo/Grizzly Bear sound had continued evolving instead of getting detoured by synth-and bedroom-pop trends, or something”. Can’t say he’s wrong, can’t say he’s right, but it’s something.I personally always tell people we make guitar music.

ATH: What was your most recent release? Any planned releases for 2024?

Our new album Mimi comes out April 26th 2024 on Sub Pop Records & Bonsound.

ATH: SXSW is often called a sort of initiation which can lead to increased exposure. As a band, why did you choose to play the festival? Whats your aim for the week?

We’ve played the 2018 edition, it introduced us to the US market, we went there without expectations and it ended up being super positive for the band. I think for 2024, the main goal is to tease the new stuff that’s coming out later in the spring. Hopefully more people will discover our music.

ATH: What has everyone in the band been listening to, or, what plays in the tour van/car/bus?

I think Jo really likes the new MGMT record. We’re all waiting for the new Kim Gordon record, I think that would be the unanimous answer to that question.

ATH: If youve had a chance to check out any of the artists coming into town for the festival – Anyone you are excited about trying to see during the week?

Our schedule is really busy for the festival, but I’d recommend people to go see our fellow friends from Montreal : La Scurit, N Nao, Crabe, Population II, Alix Fernz, No Bro, Totalement Sublime and more! Most of them are playing a showcase presented by Mothland who are also friends. Also our Sub Pop labelmates Deeper and Omni are to see.

ATH: Disregarding the constructs of space, time, and availability – If you could construct a power group of artists to make the supreme, all powerful super group of a band, who would be in it? Pick as many members as you like. Who is on vocals, drums, guitar, etc.? All submissions will be judged with a winner awarded during the festival.

Never been a fan of power groups, but let’s say :

Nico on vocals,

Meg White on drums,

Kim Gordon on bass,

Kimya Dawson on guitar

ATH: Any road survival or SXSW survival tips for newbie bands? What are some must haves to survive the road?

My personal favorites are Dill pickle sunflower seeds, Pickle-in-a-pouch, Dill pickle potato chips and lemon gatorade to survive on the road.

ATH: What concerns do you have as a band or a human or both? In regards to music, the world, reallywhere does your mind tend to wander these days?

To be honest, I find it hard to be optimistic about music or the world, don’t you think?
In a recent statement, James Blake opened-up about how broken the music industry is. If we want quality music, somebody is gonna have to pay for it. He also went on to say that Streaming services dont pay properly, labels want a bigger cut than ever and just sit and wait for you to go viral, TikTok doesnt pay properly, and touring is getting prohibitively expensive for most artists. The brainwashing worked and now people think music is free And by the way, since its cheaper to produce fast synthetic music and to drop it on streaming every week, to capitalize on the strengths of the model, watch how the model is preparing you for AI generated music that pays musicians nothing at all.
As for the world, I guess it’s even worse? It’s been in “crazy mode” for years now, doesn’t look like it’s going the right way either. Staying sane and relatively happy is what I personally aim for.
