Alexei Shishkin Shares Bermuda Single

Alexei Shishkin has decided that 2024 will be the year he just keeps writing and writing; he’s already released Dagger this past February, and is now on the way to release Open Door Policy this summer. Today, we’re offering you “Bermuda,” which has Shishkin offering up a bit of twang and a sprinkle of stomp that feels like a canoe race around some tropical island. Personally, I love how Shishkin just completely avoids tradition by ignoring the chorus moment; it feels like its in there musically, but he leaves it lyric free to kind of lock in the overall feel of the song, both nostalgic and exploratory. If, like me, you’re a fan of Alexei’s work, keep an eye out for his 10th LP, Open Door Policy, out June 28th via Candlepin Records.

Donald Beaman Announces Fog on Mirror Glass

Wanted to start today with something personal and pensive, and I couldn’t quite think of anything more fitting than this new track from Donald Beaman. Today he announces Fog on Mirror Glass, and the accompanying single below seems a study in patience and voice. In the strumming path, the notes have this resonation that seems almost mantra-like, hanging close in tonality whereby it almost feels as if it becomes a spiritual chant all on its own. Still, Beaman has this blanketing warmth in his own voice, building in another layer of texture that feels tied to the earth. Fog on Mirror Glass is out June 14th via Royal Oakie.

Qubinoix Share Everyday is Sunday

Today seems as good a day as any to throw some noisy pop from Japan right your way, and thus I’m here with Qubinoix. The tune below is the B-side from their forthcoming Girls Are Alright 7″, which is being handled by Brooklyn label Living Waters. The founding members of the band have decades of experience crafting the shoegaze scene in Japan, and when they go at it hear, they’re melding influences of metal, shoegaze, alternative…really its an amalgam of pop music that hits just the right notes with Ichimaki’s vocals. Those vocal notes have this brightness to them that sort of shines through the dense cavernous music they’ve created, ensuring you get the sweetness balanced perfectly. You’ll be able to grab a copy of the 7″ tomorrow for Bandcamp Friday!

 

Freedom Fry Share Gemini

As a person that pours through about 100 + songs a day, I often find groups that I take for granted, like Freedom Fry. The LA outfit haven’t failed to lighten my day, always offering these soulful pop tunes that flirt with a classic sensibility and a futuristic outlook. You can hear how they settle into the groove on this track, almost slinking their way into your consciousness. But, they do it with this sly wink that reminds me of the early Phoenix records, though never turns its back on nostalgia. You never know where they’re going, and in that, I’m always happy to lend them some extra coverage.

Bats & Mice Return!

If the band name Bats & Mice doesn’t immediately ring a bell, I’m not sure anyone (including the band) would blame you as they’ve dormant for going on 12+ years. What was a promising career, with the high point being their last EP Back in Bat from 2010, halted shortly after with the band pausing all creative output to focus on life and other projects. Luckily for all of us fans, the Chapel Hill lads got back together late last year, made some tunes together again, and have a full album of material ready for release later this year. Of course an album announcement wouldn’t be fit without some new tunes to check out, so treat your ear holes to this new track “Buried Just Beyond.” This was well worth the wait.

The new album from Bats & Mice, PS: Seriously, is due out on May 31st via Lovitt Records.

Stephen’s Shore Share Under the Pine

I don’t always invest in EPs, but you better believe that when I do its because Stephen’s Shore have released something pretty special. They’ve got Neptune EP on the horizon, and today share a more pensive piece that’s really gotten stuck in my brain. While they’re last single held tight to a bit of bounce, this single sees them sinking further into the mistiness of songwriting; there’s almost a dense cloud of pop sentimentality that pervades every inch of the track. In a way, it reminds me of a cleaner version of what the Mary Onettes excelled at; there’s this somber quality that presented in this fashion somehow works in contrast and gives you this little hint of spirit. Feel like the rainy weather outside my window and this tune couldn’t have been better timed for one another. If you want to invest in this EP, buy it from Meritorio Records before it drops on May 10th.

Animal Surrender Share After Single

When you listen to the latest single from Animal Surrender, those who know the circle that the band runs in will surely find some familiarity here; the track is a reimagining of Mike Wexler‘s 2020 tune “After.” In the original tune (you can find it HERE), the track has this rolling movement to it; it feels like it is constantly moving forward, even as Wexler’s vocals have this steadied pace. Animal Surrender, fascinated by the concept of love being the one true constant after everything we experience, turn the song into a meditation. The track almost drifts on the wind, almost working in the reverse fashion, as the vocals seem to be the driving force of energy in this version. If you’re fascinated by this tune, you’ll find more wonders when you open the band’s self-titled release, out on. May 17th via Ernest Jenning Record Co.

Font Announce Strange Burden

Those within the confines of Austin have been backing Font for several years; they’ve been one of the biggest rising stars from our local scene (they even played out ATH vs SOTO party). Well, the good news is that now those outside of Austin are going to be able to catch on too; the band have just announced their debut album Strange Burden with this pulsating new single. The group are incredible at building a rising tension and twisting it into some fantastical pulsating brand of pop; they often remind me of where Liars ventured when they first started going in an electronic realm. This black-and-white video should provide you with a glimmer of their joyous brand of jittering pop; Strange Burden hits on July 12th via Acrophase.

Red Sleeping Beauty Share New York, New Me

It’s the first of the month, and while I tempted to make a Bone Thugs reference, we’ll stick instead with the newest single from Red Sleeping Beauty and their “One Song a Month Series.” This song is all about immediacy, providing a synth-driven line that kicks into a hip-swaying groove. Thematically, the song hits on the ideas of finding a new version of yourself in New York; it can also be seen as a narrative about finding new opportunities when you move somewhere, remaking your whole identity. But, maybe that doesn’t even matter to you, and you just want to get lost in the beat…that opportunity comes just by pressing play below. Adults and Spank Hair Announce Split EP

You’ve got to hand it to the good folks at Fika Recordings, again showing their excellent tastes by lining up this new split …In the Big League EP from Adults and Spank Hair. While the two groups generally sound vastly different, if you pair these tracks together, you can hear the ties that bind them, and us, together. Adults offer “Trouble,” which really takes off after the 30 second mark; you’ll hear the increased spirit in the recording, tethering their jangling brand of pop to the sheer earnestness of Spank Hair. For their part, Spank Hair share “Cowboy Scene,” which bears some sonic similarities to acts like Martha or Spook School, pulling in an old school power punk with giant hooks that’ll have you singing atop your lungs!
