SXSW Interview: Good Fuck
Tim Kinsella has pretty much been a household name for me since the late 90s, and with that, it’s been really interesting to see his progression throughout the years. Now, his new project with Jenny Pulse, Good Fuck, are heading down to Austin for SXSW. We grabbed a few quick words for ya!
ATH: Whats the name of the band/group? Where are you from?
GF: We are Good Fuck from Chicago
ATH: Describe your groups sound.
GF: Tim and Jenny music: beats and collaginess
ATH: What was your most recent release? Any planned releases from 2019?
GF: Our self-titled debut came out on Joyful Noise Records in February and we are half done with our new record which expands and deepens the same hunches we pursued on the first record: 70s Eno, 80s hip hop, 90s Leonard Cohen
ATH: For most SXSW sets, you get 30 minutes to leave a lasting impression. Whats your plan of attack? You have a set list mapped out yet?
GF: We don’t stop between songs anyways and we cover a lot of ground with 4 hands in 2 roadcases.
ATH: Lets say your band has been booked an official showcase at a pop up venue somewhere in the middle of 6th street. The lineup features thrash metal, hip-hop, spoken word, and you. The sound is horrible, the lineup is not your style, and the crowd seems angry at the world. How would your band deal with such a situation?
GF: We play exactly the same in every situation. It’s our job to create the center of gravity in the room and people are free to receive it or not, but we don’t really look up much anyways
ATH: There are tons of bands coming into town. Of the 1000+ bands coming into town, who would you ideally like to play with. What band friends will be here?
GF: We are excited to play with Har Mar Superstar who is an old friend. I’d like to play with Voivod if they’re around this year.
ATH: What has everyone in the band been listening to, or, what plays in the tour van/car/bus?
GF: We are kinda compulsive music listeners and check out new stuff all the time. I’ve been liking that later Portishead record from like 10 years ago and Keith Jarret improvisations and we got some records that I don’t know what they are cuz they aren’t in English that Domino Sound in New Orleans reissued, very cool bizarre kinda off-key hard blues
ATH: Describe your perfect festival, real or not? Whos headlining? Wheres it take place? Etc.
GF: Depeche Mode
Esplendor Geometrico
Paranoid London
Injury Reserve
Sleaford Mods
Craig Leon
Bernardino Femminielli
Kyle Hall
Cris and Cosey
It is located somewhere with clean, private bathrooms.
ATH: Whats on the bands rider? If were bringing you food and booze, what can we bring you?
GF: Dolmas, miller lite
ATH: The band gets to create their own taco pop-up shop at SXSW? Whats the name, and what sort of tacos will you have? Any sides?
GF: Goof Duck, just steak and baja fish tacos.
