SXSW Interview: Reaches
This time around we’re giving our attention to Reaches, the project of Justin Randel. If you get the chance to catch the act during SXSW, you’ll likely here new tunes from the forthcoming Wherever the Internet Goes, Sorrow Follows. Read on for Justin’s responses!
ATH: What’s the name of the band? Where are you from?
Reaches: I play as Reaches and Im from Brooklyn, NY
ATH: Describe your group’s sound.
Reaches: Maybe I sound like gothed-out Kate Bush fan fiction
ATH: What was your most recent release? Any planned releases from 2019?
Reaches:I have record titled Wherever the Internet Goes, Sorrow Follows coming out on March 29th!!
ATH: For most SXSW sets, you get 30 minutes to leave a lasting impression. Whats your plan of attack? You have a set list mapped out yet?
Reaches: Being a freak always.
ATH: Lets say your band has been booked an official showcase at a pop up venue somewhere in the middle of 6th street. The lineup features thrash metal, hip-hop, spoken word, and you. The sound is horrible, the lineup is not your style, and the crowd seems angry at the world. How would your band deal with such a situation?
Reaches: I feel like this just describes DIY touring. If you play 100 shows in a year and youre going to play in some truly wild places with the greatest assortment of acts. I say its best to just not have expectations, bring what you need to sound good, remember that no one owes you anything and that we all do music because its fun.
ATH: There are tons of bands coming into town. Of the 1000+ bands coming into town, who would you ideally like to play with. What band friends will be here?
Reaches: I know my friend Noah that plays as Profligate will be in town. Id love to play a show with him!
ATH: What has everyone in the band been listening to, or, what plays in the tour van/car/bus?
Reaches: Ive been listening to a lot of Octonomy, Blu Anxxiety, Concavity and Dean Cercone.
ATH: Describe your perfect festival, real or not? Whos headlining? Wheres it take place? Etc.
Reaches: Im a talent buyer in Brooklyn so I get to do this frequently, but I think my favorite event I put together this year was a Laraaji record release party. It was such a lovely evening! I would love to start having generator shows through the parks and beaches this year though.
ATH: Whats on the bands rider? If were bringing you food and booze, what can we bring you?
Reaches: Spirutein, 10 lbs of assorted fruits and vegetables and some breakfast tacos.
ATH: The band gets to create their own taco pop-up shop at SXSW? Whats the name, and what sort of tacos will you have? Any sides?
Reaches: I absolutely love to cook and I think my answer would quickly turn into a novella, so I mostly just want to mention that I could eat chilaquiles everyday and think Im living my best life.
