Hadda Be Share Mercurial Single

Last year, Hadda Be released their excellent Another Life LP, a record that was filled equally with pop and rock hooks. But, having roots in the post-punk arena, the band seem ready to flex that muscle again with their latest single. There’s certainly an angular notion that comes from the guitar, stabbing at the speakers, setting up the song for this openness that allows for the vocals to sweep into the picture. What I love here is the band tight-roping that walk between various genres, sharp in some spots, dreamy in others, ultimately leading you to a chorus that serves as your reward. Once it hits, you can feel the bravado in the voice, operating with this sense of cool that’s coated in melody. Enjoy a new ditty here!

Looks like folks are finally waking up to the fact that the year doesn’t have to end just because people toss up some arbitrary judgment list; there were so many rad tunes dropping last week that we didn’t even have time to get them all up. RayRay ran some premieres for Tearing Up and Sunfruits, while I was super ecstatic to get a new Roller Derby tune. We also got to run a really great Rock n’ Recipes with Heather Trost just before her album dropped. Plus, Austin was repping, with a brilliant new tune from Half Dream, and Zero Percent APR dropping their new LP. Give it all a listen and let us know which is your fave!

Rock N’ Recipes: Heather Trost

Heather Trost is perhaps best known as one half of Hawk and a Hacksaw, but as we’ve tried to show on this site recently, their new album Desert Flowers has us excited for her solo work. We were fortunate to catch up with Heather, talk about the record, influences and her favorite food memories. Plus, she leaves us with a wonderful recipe for corba, which is a great red lentil soup with Turkish origins. Check out the interview and recipe after the jump!

Field Guides Drop Latest Single Esopus

In trying to cram your Friday with as much new tunes as I’ve got under my belt, this delightful new Field Guides tune seems like its got to be included here. Sharp angular riffs do a little jig around this pulsing beat and 80s synth lines, so you just dive into the inner joy right away. Vocals have a feathery touch to them, giving off this sort of darkened croon that’s perfectly contrasted by the shimmering musical underbelly. All of it comes together perfectly, picking up where the band left off with their recent LP, Ginkgo. Definitely a Friday bright spot for you!

Half Dream Share New Single, Roses

Since releasing their Monster of Needing EP back in early pandemic days, Austin’s Half Dream have consistently been act to keep an eye (or ear rather?) on. Well, we’re in luck as today, we get a new single, with the promise that a debut LP is in the works for next year. And, as much as I loved the broad bedroom pop of their EP, their latest works really show how much Paige Berry has grown as a songwriter. This tune has these little guitar notes that hint at twang, but feel like little musical candles flickering behind Berry’s voice. Suddenly, the guitars take off, drums pick up speed and the whole group begins to flex their musical muscle, overlapping a guitar note here and there. Back and forth the song goes, introspective or galloping, all the while, the band just seem to be taunting us with how accomplished they’ve become. Enjoy this jam, and we look forward to hearing more from the group next year.

Model Shop Share Lucky

In just a coupe of weeks, we’ll get to hear the entirety of the new Model Shop LP, but we finally get to hear the opening tune, which certainly sets the tone for the record and the band’s intentions. A thumping drum joins up with an acoustic strum, bringing about a galloping earnestness that kicks off hook-laden pop rock you’ll rush to turn up. They up the ante though, as one hook surely isn’t enough for the average pop fan, so they add in some vocal harmonies, adding both contrast and exuberance; it’s an immediate shot to the listener, letting us all know the group aim to please! Love Interest will be out via Meritorio Records on November 25th.

Zero Percent APR Release Higher and Higher Forever

If you were to ask me which band in Austin did I truly feel like encompassed the old spirit of Austin, I’d definitely have to say Being Dead (I even backed that by putting out an early 7″!). They’re so creative in fact that they’ve created an entirely different brand with which to their various creations, Zero Percent APR. Even when the band seems like they’re fucking with you, or at least toying with your expectations, you’re still totally thrilled by their songwriting. They take little hooks and sugar bumps, then spin them, but they’re always careful not to wear those bits out, deconstructing pieces then building them back so you can have your fix of those little pop nuggets. Lucky for you, there’s a vinyl copy of this floating around today, courtesy of Spared Flesh Records.

T.G. Shand Shares WAWO Single

Feel like there are still so many good tunes to be had at the end of the year, and I wanted to make sure we didn’t miss out on the latest from New Zealand’s T.G. Shand. A new EP is in the works, and this is our first listen, bringing the artist back to some of her darkened shoegaze roots. There’s a whole lot of cavernous scaffolding, first with subdued jangles ringing slightly, allowing the vocals to layer in an icy dreaminess. Soon, the vocals begin to layer atop one another, continuing to add in this dense texture that makes the song a marvel. Here’s to hearing more real real soon.

Zachary Vito is Brook Terrace + Preps Debut LP

Zachary Vito is no stranger to the indie scene, having played with Sonny and the Sunsets and April Magazine, among others, but now they are releasing a new LP under the Brook Terrace moniker. Now, I’ve spent several repeat sessions listening to this single, and every time I come back, I get those little raised hairs on my arm, like the first time I heard Elliott Smith. You’ll find the same intimacy in the vocals, like sharing a detailed whispering conversation with a dear friend. One spot Vito strikes out on his own is with some of the more wayward guitar excursions, no doubt influenced by spending time with producer Bill Ryder-Jones. The Brook Terrace LP is shaping up to be quite special, so keep an eye out for its release on December 16th.

Dog Park Shares Sunny Decadence

After that brash morning ripper from Shake Chain it feels only apt that I should caress your ears with a little sweetness, this time from French outfit Dog Park, the newest pickup from Howlin Banana Records. Immediately, the guitars grab at you, wrapping you in this blanket that’s warm and dreamy, just hinting at a churning jangle to let you drip off into happiness. Ultimately, the warmth of the song resides in the voice coming through your speakers, allowing you to really immerse yourself in its own brand of decadence…the sweetness notes you might hear today. It’s a fairly new act, so hopefully we hear more real soon!
