We have to start this list off with a disclaimer. We have three writers, all with different tastes, so the list should reflect that a little bit. Also, these are our opinions, and by no means, are they meant to be seen as an “end all be all” to the question of what were the best songs of 2009. That being said, we like our list quite a bit. Sure, it’s got some expected numbers at the top, but the rest of the list is genius. We’ve got some of the songs streaming for you, and the rest take you straight to youtube. FTC: The Impossibles

As I thought about this year’s best Austin albums (which comes out next week folks), I came across an ancient video of one of my favorite local bands, The Impossibles. Growing up in Austin, I had the pleasure of singing along with this band at least once a month. Sure, I didn’t know everyone there, but I felt as if they were all my friends. We screamed, we threw up our hands in unison, and yes, we skanked a little bit, or a whole lot, depending upon your dedication and conditioning. The guys in this band went on to play parts in Mineral and LAX (lets not forget Slowreader). It was a time of youth and innocence, and The Impossibles were the perfect blend of both. Let’s travel down memory lane together.

Metric @ La Zona Rosa (12/1)

A sold out show at La Zona Rosa indicated that Metric has finally reached a point in their careers where you couldn’t argue with their growing popularity. Fresh on the heels of the release of their latest album, Fantasies, the group came to Austin with the intention of showing just why you love them so much. FT5: Album Covers of 2009 (So Far)

At a time when we are all witnessing the CD’s imminent demise and the convenience of digital files running rampant, thankfully from an art perspective, a vinyl re-emergence is upon us. While sound quality is obviously seen as the most important reason why we are seeing audiophiles jumping back on the vinyl bandwagon, album artwork is also getting a much deserved close-up. With the vinyl album requiring more elaborate artwork packages, bands are re-thinking the overall aesthetic and producing some great work, which only enhances the overall music experience. 2009 has been a great year not only for the ears, but for the eyes as well and below are my picks for the Top 5 album covers from 2009 (so far). Honorable mentions go to Animal Collective’s cover for making me dizzy from staring at it too long and Neko Case for badass picture of the year. Obviously art is about as subjective as subjectivity can get, so give us some feedback. Who’s your number 1?

FTC: David Bowie

While perusing some of our old From the Closet features I realized that we have never given a shout out to David Bowie, until today! So how does one choose from such a vast discography when dealing with one of the legends of rock? Easy! Easy you say? Yes, easy! Just stick with his best album and the best representation of the glam rock genre: Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars. I wish I could drop the whole album on our site for those pitiful few who haven’t heard it, but that’s not allowed, so I’ll stick with title track “Ziggy Stardust”. Can you even imagine what it would’ve been like to be around in the early 70s and see Bowie during the height of his Ziggy alter-ego? Many have tried to imitate, many have carried on the torch, some have even mocked, but we’ll just never get another Bowie. Never. Be sure to pick this one up on vinyl so you can experience the true mind blowing power of putting this on the record player back in 1972. Enjoy.
