This is fine.
Monday night gave you lots of choices as for live music in this city, but it didn’t seem like Emo’s was the popular choice for many, as even with the full venue partitioned in half the crowd wasn’t close to capacity. However this lack of audience wasn’t a problem once the bands for the night took the stage, each offering a different kind of tone and energy.

Just a short few weeks ago I shared with you one of the singles from The Entrance Band, and they’re already back again with the newest, “Spider,” from their upcoming record. While I hear bits of a genre to be unnamed, I’m finding this tune much more expansive, delving into the more exploratory regions of modern indie fare. The vocals are steadier, and the accompanying music has a broader focus, which definitely makes this one of the more powerful tracks we’ve heard from the group. You can find this tune on Face the Sun; it hits stores on November 19th via Beyond is Beyond is Beyond.

I first found myself drawn to the voice of Laura Marling when she participated in the original line-up of Noah and the Whale, but since her departure from the group, she’s only continued to rise to fame. Her most recent album, Once I Was an Eagle, has received praise all over the world, offering listeners a chance to absorb her passionate take on stripped down folk music. I couldn’t envision a better place to catch her than at the Central Presbyterian Church, where her voice is sure to soar into the balcony. She’ll be joined by opener Willy Mason, adding to the nights powerful line-up.

If you read the pages of this site from time to time, you’ve surely come across my adoration for Matinee Recordings and all the work the small label has been able to release. From the Lucksmiths to Bubblegum Lemonade…and so many more, they’ve continued to provide indiepop fans with a growing catalog of hit after hit after hit. The label celebrates their 15th Year this month by releasing A Sunday Matinee CD, which includes rare songs, unreleased tracks and covers (including Lucksmiths covering Jonathan Richman). It’s a great accomplishment to run a label successfully for so long, so join me in celebrating the label (and ordering the CD). You can stream the entire thing below.

We’ve actually written about both of these bands a ton, and honestly, I didn’t see such a collaboration coming our way. That being said, I’m actually really pleased with the end result from Forever Evers; it’s a dreamy electro pop number that you’ll want to play for the rest of the day. There’s this stuttering electronic loop that remains central to the track, with the heavier beat really driving home the sensation. And the vocals are just what I’d expect from something that James Harvey is part of, which means it’s great. We’ll keep you posted on a possible release.

So you’re bummed you didn’t get to see the Nine Inch Nails taping, or you don’t feel like going all the way East to catch Cults? Well, the best option out of all of these is still going to be the Nobunny show at Red 7. Nobunny’s just released Secret Songs, and he’ll be bringing his sweaty live show to our local haunt in hopes of encouraging a joyous riot. He’ll also be joined by one of my absolute favorite local bands, Pharaohs, which pretty much guarantees that you’re night’s going to be super rad, regardless of what plans you had. Mondays are always difficult for everyone, trying to climb out of bed and head back to the daily grind. Sometimes you need a nice little pick me up, and I hope that this tune from The Sea Life helps you out in that arena. The band’s been changing around the line-up a bit, and they claim that that has influenced their sound a bit; whatever they say, it’s good to my ears. It’s got this throbbing hook, but in an indie pop realm, as opposed to some sort of electronic induced push and pull. Definitely a group who’ve caught my attention today. Enjoy.

Fun Fun Fun Fest is a week away.
Among the artists coming that I have been a fan of for a long time, one that I have always had a conflict to prevent me seeing live set is Bonobo. Dial ‘M’ For Monkey is a mandatory road trip album. Can’t recall what was going on that I couldn’t make the show earlier this year at Emo’s, but I missed it. While Simon Green is touring with a band, he is also one helluva DJ. If you aren’t familiar with The Boiler Room, get familiar. It is a great way to soundtrack your late night activities.

I’m feeling local this weekend, and though there are a couple of interesting traveling tours coming into town (Those Darlins/The Blow), I really think your best bet is to end up at Hotel Vegas on Saturday night. Some of our favorite bands will be playing that evening; these are bands we’ve supported in some fashion since we started this site. You’ll get to catch Booher, which is the new project from former Zykos member, M. Booher. Plus, you’ll get Frank Smith, who’ve put out tons of great songs, all of which we’ve enjoyed. Headlining the night will be another band we clearly support, as we helped the band put out their self-titled LP: Grape St. They’ve only gotten better over the last year, and you should expect a full house to bring things to a riotous evening. And, it’s going to be cheap, so why not hit up a great local show?!

Trouble in Mind Records remains one of the most solid choices for a band looking to get signed. They’ve got a unique blend of artists, though the all have some sonic similarities. So, it’s no suprise that their latest signing, Morgan Delt, has his feet firmly planted in the history of California. There’s bits of classic Cali pop, yet you’ll also find this lurking psychadelia that courses throughout. He’ll be releasing his self-titled debut on January 28th, helping us keep things interesting to start off 2014. I’m interested to hear more from Morgan, and we wish him the best.
