Fresh New Music from The Proper Ornaments

properornamentsA few years ago, I was haunted by the music of the Proper Ornaments, which is odd, considering they only had a handful of tunes available.  But, our friend Toby at Finest Kiss pointed out that the band had a new single, and an upcoming LP on the way.  What I like about the band’s direction is their inclination to slow things down a bit, in comparison to early works; the melodies are softer and the guitar seems to carefully traipse about in the foreground.  It all leaves you with an airy listen, yet comes across just as powerful as the early workings of the group, if not more so.  Enjoy this single: available on Lo Recordings.

Date Tonight, June 25th
Location Continental Club
Doors 9 PM
Tickets $10 at the Door

We’ve talked about The Happen-Ins many a time, not to mention our adoration for our boys Grape St. I mean, come on, we put out that band’s record.  But, not only do the bands get to grace the historic venue, I’m also excited for Badgerzz. What?! You haven’t heard of them? Well, up until awhile ago, I hadn’t either, though their main man Michael Booher has been a large part of the Austin scene for quite some time.  He was one of the members of now defunct Zykos, and he’s been batting around as a solo act for a bit.  Badgerzz is his new act, and I’m assured you’re all going to be really pleased with what he brings to the table.  We hope to bring you more from Michael as we get it. Awesome show for a Tuesday…not to mention the rad poster.

Show Review: Twin Shadow @ Emo’s (6/22)

Why? All I can do is ask why.

Twin Shadow was on my list of best shows last year. It was a sold out two night stand at The Mohawk. Confess had all the buzz in the world behind it. Fast forward to last Saturday and a group of about 1200 fans gathered to get another dose of George still touring on the strength of Forget and Confess. Unfortunately, this iteration won’t make my list of best shows. The band sounded amazing, but the lighting that must have seemed like a good idea at the time, just killed it for me (and not just because I take the photos).

Read on for thoughts on a surprising Elliphant and peep the pics of Twin Shadow in Projector Land…

Austin Spotlight: The Whalers Ready New LP

battleshipsartI’m really excited by the leaps and bounds that The Whalers have made in the past couple of years, and I think their latest single really demonstrates the growth, providing us with one of their best tunes to date.  The band does a great job blending mild bits of Americana with modern indie rock flare, adding both energy and their own unique touches.  Their new record will be available to the masses come this October, and as expected, it’s shaping up to be one hell of a listen.  And if you’re local, the group plays with our boys Tiger Waves on July 6th over at the Belmont.

Show Review: Baths @ The Mohawk (6/21)

Sure, it was hot. The Mohawk didn’t sell out, but it got close while still being a “comfortable crowd”, as I call it. It means you can mill about, check out different vantage points with out territorial conflict.

The busy lineup with D33J, Houses, Baths and Beisbol meant a doors to close night for your truly. I took plenty of pics, saw plenty of friends, maybe had a whisky and saw some great music. Join me as I (unsuccessfully) reminisce on a successful Friday night.

Show Preview: Prince Rama + Silk Rodeo Debut @ Red 7 (6.23)

prince-rama-456-022311

Date Sunday, June 23rd
Location Red 7
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets $8 from Transmission

The last time I caught Prince Rama in town, I was mesmerized by their performance, so it goes without saying that you should take it upon yourself to catch such an incredible show.  But, more importantly, there are a slew of local Austin acts kicking things off, such as Sleep Over and Technicolor Hearts.  More importantly, we’ll all be treated to the debut of new Austin band, Silk Rodeo.  A member of the live act has called the music “smooth wave” and promised lasers! You don’t want to miss that.  You can catch a video of the band’s single, “All Yr Own” right HERE.  Show up early, support the locals, and tip the bartenders; it’s going to be a special night from all the acts.

Sunday BBQ WTF OMG from Loteria

loteriaI realize that as an Austin blog, we’ve got to do our part to spread the word more often about the great acts all over our fair city, so I wanted to introduce people to Loteria.  They’ve been playing around for some time, and they’re currently working on finishing up a debut LP.  Musically, they’ve got a punk rock attitude, though their sound has allegiance to Texas history, incorporating twanging guitars and country-style solos into their catchy numbers.  Live, they’re energetic, whilst playing songs you’ll want to sing along to for the rest of the night.  Good music is both creative and fun, and I know these guys definitely epitomize those two aspects.

Show Preview: Twin Shadow @ Emo’s (6/22)

Date 6/22/13
Location Emo’s
Doors 9:00pm
Tickets $18.00

Everyone should be well aware of our love of George and company. Twin Shadow has made just about every best of list we have done. If you haven’t seen this band yet, you should punch yourself in the head. Or better still, buy a ticket and brave the parking gauntlet of Emo’s (show at Antone’s tomorrow night, too).

Elliphant is opening. Twin Shadow keeps up the tradition of bringing Swedish synth pop in to break the ice.

Show Preview: Baths @ Mohawk (6/21)

baths_obsidian_press_final_1_low-e1371504802775

Date 6/21/13
Location Mohawk
Doors 8pm
Tickets $15 @ Door

A little late notice on this one, and I offer my apologies, but you should head over to Mohawk this evening if you’re looking for a great show on a Friday night. Baths is the headliner and clearly the big draw, though you shouldn’t forget about the loaded undercard with Houses and D33J in support. You won’t find a much better show anywhere in town.

Photoguy Note: Beisbol is playing inside after. Stick around to check them out.
