Beautiful New Single From Jesse Marchant

Jesse Marchant, sometimes known as JBM, is a Canadian songwriter who has managed to warm many of the cold hearts here around the ATH offices over the years. His music tends to pair folk inspired songwriting with heavy on reverb vocals and fleshed out instrumentation to truly hit us in all the feels. Well Mr. Marchant is returning this year with a new album of material, featuring this new tune “Go Lightly” which is sure to make your weekend playlist. As I hit play for the third time this morning, I am continually amazed by the man’s ability to create such gut wrenching, yet lovely and beautiful music.

A new album from Jesse Marchant entitled Antelope Running is due out later this summer on AntiFragile Music.

 

Remington Super 60 Drop Talk Nouvelle Noveau

Norway pop outfit Remington Super 60 have been churning out some incredible pop nuggets the last few years, and today they add to that by dropping their Nouvelle Noveau EP. The opening track “Talk With You” should immediately turn you onto the band’s timelessness; Elisabeth’s voice could have come from one of your favorite 60s girl groups or been the intoxicating soundtrack to one of your recent indie flicks. I love the feathery nature of her notes, but it perhaps wouldn’t seem so sublime if Christoffer Schou didn’t add these delicate little touches to give the song’s lift, like the distant guitars in “I Won’t Change My Mind” and “Still Near.” Overall, the whole of the release feels like sitting down with a bowl of hot soup on a freezing day…nothing ever felt so right. Ablebody Changes Name to Always You, Drop Hold Out Single

It’s been about five years since we’ve heard from Ablebody, but in the interim, the band have been hard at work with new tunes…and a new name! The band, led by the Hochheim brothers, has formerly changed their name to Always You, then jumped right back into things with a new single courtesy of Shelflife Records. The tune’s offering is a bit of distance from the band’s indiepop inclinations, giving us a slightly elevated vibe; it’s almost like they’re offering up a really slow burning brand of pop, something that whets your appetite for what’s to come later. The vocals turn over and over in your mind, melodically drifting in a sort of dreamy trance-inducing fashion while the musical background just lounges, relaxing your soul. Nice to have this group back up and in the mix!

Why Bonnie Share New Tune

I think one of my favorite things of this whole pandemic has been the way many artists have reacted, releasing demos and rare tunes and the sometimes just recording a tune for the joy of playing. Late last night, Why Bonnie just upped a track with little information other than the tune itself, the first since the band released their Voice Box EP. This one feels like a mostly Blair tune, with quieted chords bending around her voice; it seems like an ode to taking a chance and saying goodbye, but perhaps I’m reading too far into the title. Regardless, glad to always have this lot putting something out.

Red Sleeping Beauty Return with Second Time

Red Sleeping Beauty were meant to be joined on stage at last year’s Cologne Popfest by Mary from Even as We Speak, so they did the next best thing and got Mary to join them on a track for their forthcoming record. The song’s a masterful bit of driving synth pop, running with a heavy beat that seems built for late nights and neon lights. But, as much as the energy has this dance floor fit, Mary’s softness does a good job of keeping the tune elegant, giving it this confidence that shows signs of a huge record coming our way. This tune’s available now via Matinee Recordings, with the album to follow later this year!

Acid Dad Drop New Single

It’s been a hot second since we last posted about the Brooklyn based outfit known as Acid Dad, so it feels like a great day to get back in touch and share their new music. Today the band dropped this brand new rockin and rollin track called “BBQ” and it’s a slick one you need to check out immediately. The song is a sort of psych inspired tune with some 90s era grunge rock vibes added in to give it a more guitar heavy rock feel.

If you are into this sort of thing, the band is releasing this track as part of a new album entitled Take it From the Dead due out June 11th on Greenway Records.

Paul Bergmann Shares The Other Side Single

Through the years, we’ve been fortunate enough to watch the twists and turns of Paul Bergmann‘s musical development; his latest work seems to find him in rare form, with some notes that have me completely falling for his work all over again. If you were to simply listen to the musical elements in this one, you’d likely walk away claiming it as a fine piece of craft, one billowing with arrangements and minute details you’ve really got to have an ear to find. But, Paul’s voice has this struggling nature to it in this performance, like he’s constantly gasping to get his words out there; there are faint moments of roughness you might find on the early Bright Eyes efforts too, so you get that pained intimacy. Looking forward to hearing the whole of The Other Side on April 2nd.

Pansy Share Trash Single

You ever stumble upon a song that just seems like it ties all the loose ends in life together? Well, as I’m writing that, this new track from Pansy seems to completely just fit every mood and every thought. It’s not even about the lyrical content, though there’s some resonation there too, but more so about the general feel of the tune; it makes me feel connected to myself in some manner that I’m struggling to fully explain. Vivian McCall shares this intimate number, and it borders on dramatic bedroom pop and quieted slowcore. It just makes everything feel right, so if you or someone you know just needs that, then turn them onto this tune. If you dig it, Pansy will be released by Earth Libraries on April 2nd.

Since stumbling upon Merk earlier this year, I’ve just been super into what he’s putting together for the forthcoming Infinite Youth LP. On a certain level, this new single feels the most accessible; it’s definitely brandishing a really polished pop appeal, something that gets your feet shuffling. But, while you can tap your toes, there’s this subtlety that I’ve really grown to enjoy, a little bit of patience and refined pop spins. Weirdly, I can see myself sweeping the house, then doing a nice little smooth spin with broom in hand, pulling it in as my stand-in microphone to shred the chorus for my wife and daughter. I’m your no-shame pop fan; grab the LP on April 9th via Humblebrag Records.

Quivers Announce Golden Doubt

I was all in on Quivers when they dropped We’ll Go Riding on the Hearses, so of course I have high expectations for their forthcoming Golden Doubt LP! I’m sure they’ll hate hearing this but the first 2 minutes or this so sounds like classic Grant-led Go-Betweens, using a casual vocal pacing from Sam, and incredible backing harmonies from Holly and Bella…needless to say, I was slow-tapping my toes and enjoying myself. But, as a fan of 10-20 second moments of pop magic, the musical interlude around 1:40 was a nice additional touch, setting me up for the body-tingling pop eruption at 2:30! Group harmonizing never sounded so sweet, and the churning jangles and overall brightness guarantee we’ll all need a copy of the new album; it drops on June 11th via Bobo Integral/Spunk/BaDaBing!
