Show Preview: Golden Bear (CD release) @ Club de Ville (10/29)

Date 10/29/11
Location Club de Ville
Doors 7:30pm
Tickets $5 @ Door

We’re helping sponsor our second show of the week on Saturday evening at Club de Ville downtown.  The show features some of our favorite local talent in the form of Golden Bear, Great Nostalgic, Haun’s Mill, and Shivery Shakes.  Our amigos in Golden Bear are also using this 101X Homegrown event to celebrate the release of their awesome new LP Alive. Rumor on the street has it that the first 25 people in the door will receive a free copy of the CD!  We also hear that a costume contest is going down and free pizza will be provided until it runs out.  I bet you didn’t come up with plans for Halloween weekend just like me, so see ya there!

Show Preview: Zola Jesus/Crystal Antlers @ the Mohawk (10/29)

Date Saturday, October 29th
Location Mohawk
Doors 900p
Tickets $10 from Frontgate

Man, Saturday over at the Mohawk is going to be one hell of an evening.  I know we’re approaching Halloween, but everyone should get out to check out the bands featured on Saturday night.  First show starts early, featuring Zola Jesus who just released the excellent Conatus, which I’ve really enjoyed–as has all the national media.  But, if it’s too early for you, you still have a chance to check out another great band for cheap following the early show.  Our good friends in the Crystal Antlers will be coming to town to headline the inside, and there’s no reason no to pack that little space.  They put on one of the most energetic shows, not to mention the fact that they continually put out great tunes.  You better catch one of these show folks, or you’ll be sorry.

Show Preview: Pure X @ the Scoot Inn (10/28)

Date Friday, October 28th
Location Scoot Inn
Doors 800p
Tickets $10 from Thundertix

I know that there’s tons of great shows in town this weekend, but one of the better local shows features some pretty prominent bands.  First off, you’ll get Pure X headlining the gig, and they’ve received a lot of great press nationally, not to mention from this writer in particular.  Also on the bill is popular up-and-comer, SleepOver, who’ve just released their latest record.  Then, you’ll get a bunch of other acts like Silent Diane, Survive and Children of the Grave, all of which comes your way via the most excellent folks over at Scoot Inn.  If you’re free Friday, there’s only one place to be.

Show Preview: Artist vs. Cancer @ The ND (10/27)

Date 10/27/11
Location The ND
Doors 8pm
Tickets $10 @ AvC Website

On Thursday night at the ND we’re helping sponsor a great show for a great cause to benefit the recently founded Artists Against Cancer foundation in Austin.  The show features local veterans Flametrick Subs headlining with up and comers and ATH homies Whitman and Guns of Navarone also on hand to fill out the bill.  All proceeds from the minimal door charge will be going directly to help those artists in need.  You should also take some time to read up about the foundation on their new website and check out fellow sponsors sites by Powerhouse Animation and Sonora Records.

UPDATE: Unfortunately Whitman have had to cancel the show and a search is out for a replacement.  Stay tuned for updates as we receive them.

Double UPDATE: Austin band So Long, Problems has stepped in to fill the void left by Whitman.  They will go on second after GoN.

Show Pics: War on Drugs @ Emo’s

We get closer to the inevitable demise of the original Emo’s. I get closer to getting through all the photos from shows this month.

This installment features War on Drugs, with Carter Tanton and Purling Hiss opening. I have a few comments and plenty of gloriously bathed in red and yellow shots to burn into your memory. Loud show, good way to end the run I was on…

Show Preview: Deer Tick @ Emo’s East (10/25)

Date 10/25/11
Location Emos East
Doors 9pm
Tickets $14 @ Ticketweb

Folk/blues rockers Deer Tick are making a stop into the recently opened Emo’s east over on Riverside.  Support for the night is provided by Virgin Forest and Dead People.  Seems like a great time to experience the new venue for the first time.

Show Preview: Terry Malts (& More) @ 29th St. Ballroom (10/24)

Date Monday, October 24th
Location 29th Street Ballroom
Doors 900p
Tickets $5 @ the Door

Sure, St. Vincent is coming to town, but the best show no one seems to be discussing is going down at 29th Street Ballroom, and for cheap!  Hozac Records is bringing a solid posse to town, and perhaps my favorite on the list is Terry Malts.  There’s a bit of punk, a bit of the gaze, and just solid track after track.  You’ll also get Wax Idols, who’ll be premiering some of their new material from their upcoming record, No Future.  And, to finish out the night, you’ll have Rayon Beach closing things down. If you’re into music, you have no excuse not to be at this show.

Show Review: Washed Out @ The Mohawk

Washed Out is all growns up?

Ernest Greene has been a buzz-worthy blog-hyped man and a latop. He and his wife manage all merch. He records in the corner of a bedroom at a lakehouse. This is a solo act. Or is it?

The stage was full of instruments. There were three sets of keyboards, drums, a bass and, yes, a Macbook. But it wasn’t front and center. It wasn’t on a card table up front with a small keyboard for improv. More on the band, the tech and the openers Feathers and Sleep ∞ Over after the break.
